1 Reviews of the Escala 4
By: Dk168 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating: Date: 21/10/2011
I bought the Escala 4 as a replacement for my trust Khyam Freelander that was damaged in the high winds in Sep 11, as I intend to camp whenever I can throughout the year, and need a tent that could withstand the elements, especially strong winds.
I chose the Hypercamp Escala 4 because of the following reasons:
I) It has a movable front panel, and when cited further into the tent, it provides me with a sizable covered porch area (approximately 1.4m x 3m) for cooking, resting and entertaining purposes. This means I do not need to put up an additional canopy or windbreak, and should save some set up time.
Ii) The footprint of the tent is sufficiently large for 2 adults and a dog even when the front panel is installed on the middle frame. Further living space can be made by installing the front panel at the front.
Iii) Pyramid tents are well known to be able to withstand high winds due to their sloping sides and back.
Iv) The tent can be put up by a single able person with relative ease.
V) It is affordable when compared with other manufacturers of canvas tents.
The purchasing process via Obelink’s English site was largely hassle free, thanks to their very helpful support team who patiently answered all my questions relating to the tent. They were also very quick to send me a replacement box for the poles that failed to turn up at the same time as the box containing the canvas, groundsheets and inner tent.
The tent came with generic instructions, information and advice for Hypercamp’s range of tents, in Dutch, along with a tent-specific diagram showing how the tent should be put together. The English translation of the generic instructions etc. Can be found on tent-tent.Com, Obelink’s English site where I bought the tent.
Although lacking in detailed instructions on how to put the tent together, such as how to join the groundsheet to the main canvas etc., I managed to work out how to join the canvas to the groundsheet, thanks to the coloured co-ordinated tabs on the zips.
The main groundsheet supplied is a zipped in bath tub, and is made of heavy PVC. I used a budget tarpaulin as an additional groundsheet so as to minimise the risk of damage to the main one. A separate groundsheet is provided for the front section if one decides to install the front panel right at the front of the tent.
The inner tent is one pod with a roll-up divider. A double airbed fits snuggly in one side of the pod. Hence I prefer to have the divider rolled up so as to provide more room for luggage and the fan heater etc.
I found the tent relatively easy to pitch on my own providing I make certain adjustments to the pitching process to compensate my lack of stature (only 5’2”/157cm in height) and upper arm strength.
Details of the issues encountered during my test pitch and how I overcame them can be found in my thread titled “My new Hypercamp Escala 4” in the Tent Info forum.
There are storage pockets inside the inner tent on each side of the pod, and the inner tent hook up point is excellent for hooking up the tent light.
With the front panel installed at the middle frame, the living area provided is approximately 1.7m x 3m and is ample for 2 people and a dog.
There is a zip up mesh-covered vent on each side of the tent in the main living area.
On the front panel, there is a PVC window with a mesh vent above it. The window cover can be rolled up just to show the window; or completely so that the vent is also uncovered.
There is a covered PVC window on each side of the front section of tent.
The tent appears to be well-made except for two small flaws in the canvas. One is on the main canvas and had been skilfully patched. The other is a 4mm nick in the front door that can be easily hidden by using a fabric applique.
I have only spent one night in the tent after my test pitch in Oct 11 with only light winds and no rain, and found it to be very peaceful and cosy. A 3m x 2.2m picnic blanket worked very well as a tent carpet for the main living area.
All in all, the tent met my expectations for a budget canvas tent. Without the flaws in the fabric, it would have exceeded them.
As it is, I shall award it 5 out of 5 for value for money, and 4 out of 5 for quality and construction.
I cannot wait to camp during the Christmas 2011 weekend – bunting and fairy lights already ordered!
