My partner and I have argued about the rating on this for sometime before leaving this review. And she lost of course! We love our Hartford XL and would definitely buy another one when this one is sent out to pasture. I would love to give it 10 out of 10 for our tent but can't on the simple fact it takes approx an hour to pitch and that doesn't include the guy ropes. In total it takes us 2 hours from start(boot of car) to finish (everything in tent and sorted). We couldn't ask for more from this tent, from its headroom to its spacious bedrooms you can't go wrong. We've camped just about all year round in the Hartford except for Xmas. When we purchased our tent it was above our budget but we're glad we bought it. Highly recommended for families and long camping stays.

This was our first family tent switching from a camper van that had become to crowded. We are a family of four with two children being 1 and 3. This is a massive and stable tent and has given us the room and space to survive in all weather provided by the British summer. The children love the colour and small doors of the childrens room. The living space means it is easy for everyone to get dressed or play when the weather turns. This tent was difficult to erect the first time (4 hours) but with practice this is down to 1 hour. The middle dome does take to adults to erect but after that I can pitch the rest of the tent by myself. I would highly recommend this tent for a family as it gives you the space that you need so that you are not tripping over each other

This is our first family tent and we chose it mainly because of the three bedroom pods and the large porch. It was so simple to erect and take down which I practised first with my son & his girlfriend. It is so roomy which was vital as my wife insisted in having a double two tear airbed in her pod. In the living area we had a kitchen unit,a dining table plus a spare table the dog crate plus our luggage.
The Light-cable tidies were very useful as it made suspending a multi point adaptor from the ceiling easy so the girls could use their hair straighteners and driers.

This is a large tent, with plenty of living space - we added the front extension for somewhere comfortable to sit and eat on those rainy days.
It takes a couple of hours to erect, and around the same time to take down, once everything has been cleaned and packed properly to prevent unpacking a dirty tent the next time we go camping.
I have taken the tent down on my own with some help from a sensible 10 year old, in a Norfolk 'rain-storm'. I am a fit forty-something man.
It is a very sturdy tent - lots of guy ropes, and other anchor points to hold this tent in place.
We have the extra groundsheet, which is a major benefit when deciding where to place the tent on your pitch, as well as keeping the sewn-in ground sheet clean, which minimises the tent-cleaning required when packing away.
We have camped as a family of two adults and four children in this tent. A 14, 11, and two 9 year olds. Achieving the eight berth would be challenging. Space would be ok, but you would need a degree of tolerance for a stay longer than a long weekend. Maybe that's more a comment on my personality!
We also have the carpet, which really adds to the comfort factor - although last year we just took a couple of large rugs with us, and that did the job almost as well.
I thoroughly recommend this tent for a family of six wanting a tent that is relatively easy to pitch, with plenty of living space, and is robust.

Right, had this tent for two years now so I guess it's review time.
This tent is huge and pretty heavy so first up be sure to have plenty of boot space,once out of the bag simply lay the tent out and put all ten poles together,these are colour coded and thread into their respective sleeves. I do not believe you can erect this alone as the best technique is for someone to go inside the tent and lift the centre,other person then proceeds to ring & pin. Time I guess,after two years erecting 35-45 mins fully pegged.
The tent has 24 guy ropes!
Once up you will enjoy the cavernous space,generous airy and light feel because of the excellent windows and skylights,but above all else this tent is sturdy,we have camped in storms no one should be out in and survived without a scratch,never leaked either.It's woth mentioning both rear & front entrances have mosquito screens so you can stay zipped up and still let the breeze in.
The bad. Simply can't find any,i guess the only downside is it's a people magnet,be prepared for everyone you camp with wanting to be in your tent, especially the kids!
Packing up is simple and you can leave all three pods in.Fantastic tent!

We have a Hartford L.Lovely tent, lots of space, plenty of arguments putting it up, as I'm 5' 1' and hubby is 5' 8'.I got laughed at when the I crawled underneath it to hold up the central area. Much laughter all round !
The down side is: Need a large level pitch.
Takes a good 1/2 hour to et up.
Plus side:
Huge living area
Sleep in one bedroom
Put clothing in the other bedroom
Remove the 3rd room (in the middle)and use as a back entrance.
Make the canopy entrance into a bike garage.
Yes.We have a 3 bedroomed tent for two of us!
This is the second Outwell we've owned, the quality can be compared to Vango, who really have nailed it. The Hartford L ticks all the boxes for our annual 2 weeks in France.
The fluorescent double point guy system is inspired !
For shorter trips/ weekends in the UK we use the Vango Equinox 350 or a Quechua Base Seconds Full + chuck up. We've had to rethink what we are taking to the Alps. Slopey pitches and changeable weather means we'll be taking the Quechua modular system for flexibility, and speed of de camping.
Like most seasoned campers, we have a tent for every need.

Great tent with lots of space. Fairly easy to erect and take down. No internal structure to hang things from. Quite happy with it. We also have the footprint and carpet but didn't use the extension canopy. Canopy really needs to have sides that open up too.
The rear pod opening up to provide a flow of air was most welcome.
Quite happy with it overall.

My husband decided that it was time to sell our static caravan and buy a tent. I am not a person who is at one with bugs and I have never wanted to own a tent in my life. So having been talked into it, I wanted a tent with space to spread out and also somewhere that wet shoes / clothes could be left out of our way.
The Hartford XXL ticked all the boxes as having 4 pods, we can use 2 for bedrooms and 2 for storage, leaving the living area free for table and chairs with room still for the kids to play.
The porch area is big enough to have wet shoes and clothes with room still for other bits and bobs.
Like many others we have also bought the carpet, footprint and extra front canopy, all of which adding to the experience.
We had our 'trial run' in October and came up against 45mph gusts of wind. The tent was moving a lot but all in all stood up well and kept us warm.
Whilst I would still not be able to camp without electric hook up, my opinion of camping has changed and think that is mainly down to the choice of the tent.

We love this tent!
Originally bought a similar size but cheaper tent from eBay which was impossible to erect and was returned, never used. We then did our research and found the Hartford XL.
We had a practice at putting this tent up before our holiday and managed it within 25 minutes, which was pretty good going! We can now do it in around 20 minutes.
The large living area is fantastic. The bedroom pods are plenty big enough for two ( we are a family of 4 and we only used two for sleeping, the third was used as storage space).
We will be purchasing the carpet and groundsheet before our next trip, just to make things even cosier!
TIP: As this is quite a large tent, not all sites can accommodate so it's worth checking before you go/book!

Fab tent! Sturdy, lots of space, windows and vents make it feel light and airy during the day and when closed at night nice and cosy. Our main reason for buying this tent was the huge living area which is also nice and tall - ideal for the other half as no ducking required! The pods are a comfortable two berth each. Not sure what year ours is but believe it is the older version as the inner is erected first. Although this is a bit of a drawback I have no intention of putting a tent up in the rain if I can help it and our tent was definitely more sturdy than the newer version. You do need a minimum of two people to erect this tent and at least one of them needs to be over 5'2' - I can't get the outer over the highest point and but am probably going to add a hook to the centre of the roof and attach the outer to the inner so that I can overcome this. Took us a little while to put up first time but we've definitely discovered the knack now and goes up in no time. As per other reviews the porch section can let water in at the bottom especially at the zip but this only happened when it rained heavily. We also got the carpet with this and it definitely makes the difference. Love this tent!
