User Reviews of the Orchy 600

I bought this tent last year and got to use it about 6 times. Its a great tent for 2 people (though think you would struggle to get 6 people in there.Unless you were very, very intimate.) as it has a large main area and a good size bedroom with enough head room to stand up straight in the main part (I'm 6ft).

The front door took some getting right, but looks like they have improved this on the 2010 model.

In moderate rain and wind it performed well and had no issues with it. It's easy to put up and take down and with a little practice, it does fit back in the bag with all its bits, which easily fits in the boot of a small car.

All in all, a great mid range tent for couples or small families, for not too much money. Would definitely buy another one.Though would probably go for the green. As it did seem to attract gulls landing on it when staying near the coast.

Really pleased with this, our new tent. Bought this tent for three of us (mum & 2 boys) to go camping as our other tent too big to take. Never put a tent up without my husband before, but watched the DVD a couple of times before setting off & made a few notes! My friend & I managed to get the tent up in the wind & rain - which was a bit tricky, especially as neither of had put up this tent before. Pleased with the final product. Stayed dry, no draughts. Lots of room in the living area. Handy to be able to have the door open & flysheet closed. Certainly had less flies in this tent compared to our other tent. Packed away easily & did not take up much space. Only bug bear, a small one - the room divider was a flimsey sheet which was held up by 4 toggles. This meant that the kids were able to poke & annoy each other at bedtime. I had hoped that the tent had 2 sep rooms.

We had a small three man tent to start off with as first time camping for years. After two times out in the small one we upped our game to the orchy 600. Well easy to go up, two of us had the tent up in about 15 mins, that was the first time as well. Great room for the two of us loads of room in bedroom, living area could have held a party in ther. Would be very close to get 6 in the bedroom. So far great.

Recently bought this, and used for the first time this July. Quite easy to pitch took portable dvd! really big tent, enough room for family of 4 to sit in as it rained. 6 would be pushing it. Felt very safe and cosy

Sorry people, but I'm disagreeing with the majority, after six years of camping, we decided to invest in a larger tent and went for the Vango Orchy 600 after reading reviews etc. Starting positively its a good size and is nice and light and airy. We only used it 3 times (pitching according to instructions easily) and on the third time an evening of strong winds caused several of the poles to split which in turn caused damage to the tent itself and resulted in us having to flatten it before it was completely ruined and book into a BnB at 11 0 clock at night. We managed to get the poles repaired the next day and stayed in the tent for a week where in mixed conditions in became apparent it was not as stable as other tents of the same size and quality. The stitching was also poor inside and out with rips in several places. Lost complete confidence in it and we are currently searching for another tent.

As we are fairly new to camping we wanted a tent which was easy to pitch but would provide enough room for ourselves and our 3 year old.

After a bit of research decided on a Vango tent and a 6 man version. We bought this particular model as it was a bit of a bargain at £143 (cheapest online, plus £10 delivery).

This tent is easy to pitch, but don't be fooled by colour coded poles as one is grey and the rest black. Agree with other comments about the front door ours sagged as was pegged to the sides.

Weather was a real mix but we did have very heavy rain and no leaks once we tucked flap on the SIG inside. Tent did get very warm but was very easy to air.

We were surprised by the size of the tent in comparison to the 400 - had not seen them side by side (another member of our party had the 400). Would definitely suggest a family go for the 600 as the bedroom was fairly small in the 400.

Overall very pleased and looking forward to our next trip.

We have the Vango Orchy 2009 in sage and laurel. This is our first tent.

I am very impressed with this tent. It was very easy to put up and take down. The bedroom was very large and fit a double airbed and 2 kampa junior beds plus a kampa khazi and other bits and bobs with room to move around. It was important for our family to be in 1 room together as we have a 3 year old and a 12 week old baby.

The living space was great, plenty of head height for us and room for a storage unit and table and chairs plus a pushchair and still space for our boy to play with his trains (very important LOL!).

The structure was sturdy and we had no problems with condensation or leaks. We also have the vango side extension which I'll review separately.

Can't wait to use it again in a few weeks.

Came back to camping after a number of years and looked for a spacious reasonably priced tent. Due to being 6'5' headroom is a big issue.

Have used it twice both times involved wet and windy weather. The only issues with it is that pitching in a strong breeze is tricky even for two people. The large nature of the tent and high dome can act like a sail/kite. Packs away pretty easily, is light to carry and doesn't take up too much space in the car.

That said it has performed brilliantly and echo the positive comments of the other reviews. A perfect tent for two adults and two kids.

By: Jonny004  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 06/05/2009

The perfect all round tent.

1. Largest connected bedroom space of any tent on the market. 270cm x 300cm true size. Big enough to fit 2 JRC specialist bedchairs and a double airbed at a push. If there's only 2 people camping then this is absolute luxury.

2. Porch has connected ground sheet that has a lip across the doorway (2009 model) to stop rain/puddle ingress.

3. Very light inside porch due to 2 ceiling windows, 2 windows flanking the front door way and a window opposite the side entrance.

4. Extreme protection against condensation and rain. Bedroom is fixed to the groundsheet leaving a fixed and ample space between the bedroom inner tent and the flysheet for air to circulate and prevent condensation and rain ingress.

5. Easy pitching. (witnessed a video showing one person erecting in around 5 minutes). I pitched with one other person for the first time in torrential rain and took around 20 minutes, including guy ropes.

6.Cheap. £169 cheapest on internet (2009 model). Take evidence of this to a large retailers that insists that you 'travel outside' and that brings the price down another 10% to £152.10, not bad eh?

7.Flexible design. Front and side door options. Front door can be extended with extra poles (not included) due to eyelets. Side door can be zipped down to its mesh fly protection layer for cooking near it.

8.Relatively small and light pack size. Smaller and lighter that outwell Oklahoma, although almost twice the size! Easy to pack into car. Easy to roll up into carry case. Sumatra has same dimensions but is twice the weight because of polycotton and thicker ground sheet. Therefore if weight is an issue, get the Orchy 600, and if you don't want to look after polycotton, get the Orchy 600.

9. Stable in wind, despite what other people have said. I've recently spent 3 nights in some of the worst British weather and it didn't budge in the wind and the poles are rock solid.

10. Massive porch space. 3x3 metres. Same area as Outwell Oklahoma day tent. Fits large cooking table (with cooker, calor gas bottle etc), all your gear, and room for 4 people to eat in luxury. Plus, I'm over 6 foot and I can easily stand up with boots on and walk around.

In summary.

If you want to easily fit a tent into your car and then easily pitch it and have masses of room to sleep, eat and chill out then buy this tent (following the above directions to save money of course) and ENJOY!

We got the Orchy 600 for short weekend trips rather than taking our Diablo 600XP as its much quicker to pitch (20 mins max inc footprint) and its an outer 1st. However having now been away a few times in the Orchy we would rather now take it over the Diablo ! Its a cracking tent with a massive bedroom pod, in fact the largest single pod unit we have found. The living area is more than big enough and the double doors and vent pannel will be great in the warmer evenings. SIG throughout and the integral bedroom pod makes pitching a breeze. A very well thought out tent with great head room and bags of space. The only point worth making is to watch the Vango DVD or read the instructions with regards to the front door guylines, they must peg out forward to tighten the door panel. Some people have complained about this but pitch it right and its perfect.

Im a real fan of this tent. Having had a fair few tents that only meet most of my requirements this one is the best yet.

Very easy to put up, I would like to bet that at a push I could do it solo. Plenty of head room and the living area is large enough for four to sit comfortably in not so good weather. The two doors mean that the tent is easily aired and the fly sheets will keep light rain out so it is possible to sit out of the weather and still enjoy the views.

I wouldn't recommend this tent for 6 people though, we find it roomy enough for 2 but im sure 6 would be a bit over crowded. The bedrooms are only divided by a curtain so not very suitable for friends to share unless your very friendly, but I would guess that this would be a plus for people with small children allowing a beady eye to be kept on them.

Overall - very happy with this tent.

Just had our 1st trip in our new (bought from ebay but never pitched) orchy 600. We have several (uh hum) tents ranging from 2 man to 8+ but I have to say that so far the Orchy ticks all the right boxes, large enough (2xadults & 2xteenagers) to be comfortable but small enough & quick enough to erect. Love the skylights & the mesh front door which @ Easter gave enough draught proofing whilst still being able to enjoy the views . Very easy tent to erect - 20mins total 1st time. Missing cooking area - although I don't like cooking in any tent whether sig or not . Can't wait for a longer trip

First time out with the Vango Orchy 600 over the Easter weekend 2009. Easy & straightforward to erect (although did practice once in the garden!)

No leaks despite some heavy rain, good headroom in main living area & bedroom. SIG kept us free from chilly drafts. Liked the options for ventilation, windows, & numerous handy pockets in the bedroom. (Just remember to remove your car keys BEFORE you pack the tent!)

Overall very pleased with the Orchy 600.

Not having been camping in over 20 years classed myself as a novice, and as the tents I used back then where Vango I decided to purchase a Vango Orchy 600. On pitching the tent of first day of a 5 day holiday ,one of the poles broke and had to try and tie the silver pole connector together ( was so disheartened ) also one of the small toggles holding the groundsheet at the door was missing and water got in. As it had been raining very heavy over the previous week before I arrived at the camp site and they had just continually threw sand down to try soak up the dampness in the ground, after walking around the tent the water and mud started to seep through groundsheet. Liked the overall design and look of the tent and felt their was enough room in both sleeping and living area, but would have been impressed with it all if the pole etc had not been broken and also front door sagging inwards. I had watched the instruction dvd on several occassions before setting off on trip and found them to be too short. Overall, even with all that went wrong I would have gladly swapped for another but sadly go outdoors did not have any more in stock and was unsure whether they would be getting it in again, so chose a easycamp taranto 600 ,( which I have yet to use ) but would have liked one with a built in groundsheet which I believe the easycamp licata 600 has but sadly go outdoors did not have.

We bought this because our Diablo is too much grief for a weekends use. You would not realistically sleep six. 2 adults and 2 kids great. Can't seem to get rid of sagging front door. Bag is definitely not 'oversized' Extremely easy and quick to erect, even in the rain. Lots of useful storage and hanging points. We have bought extra poles so we can pole out the door to form a porch.

By: U400jb9  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 01/09/2008

Love this tent, tested twice this year, once in good weather, once in very wet weather.

Very easy to pitch, even in adverse weather conditions. Did have the same problem with incorrectly placed guy ropes at the front which caused the front door to sag.Easily resolved with correct pitching!

Also kept the bedroom as one big room and fitted one double and two single airbeds in with plenty of room to move around.Really not sure you`d fit six in there though

Living area plenty big enough for four, with table and chairs.

Lovely and light thanks to all the windows and the roof lights.

Only real complaint is the drop down groundsheet `sagged` inwards in the main doorway and we had a minuscule amount of rain come in during one particularly bad storm.

Overall this is the 2nd tent we`ve owned and I am delighted with it.

Still looking for a porch to fit on it though

Just come back from a typical wet and windy summer camping holiday in the New Forest. We bought this tent specially for our first family camping holiday and found it to be really easy to erect and plenty enough space for a couple with 2 small children.

The living area was fine for 2 chairs, table and for the kids to play on the floor. We kept the bedroom as one big room and the 4 of us fitted in perfectly, though I don't think we would have got another 2 people in!

It was surprisingly waterproof and wind proof-definitely tested this out!

Would recommend this tent.

By: Miniandme  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 24/08/2008

I chose this tent as I had read it was easy to erect on your own and pleased to say it was. We had a fair amount of rain and wind with no problems. Spacious main room, plenty of room in the bedroom for us three, but would be a squeeze with 6 in bedroom! managed, just, to get it all back in the bag. Would have rated it higher but the finish was a bit tatty in places and would have liked some poles to hold up the main door canopy.

By: Foggers  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 13/08/2008

We have just had 12 damp days in Ireland in our new Vango Orchy 600. It was relatively simple to pitch though I would recommend watching the pitching video a few times if you are new to camping. It is advisable to detach the bedroom when taking it down as this reduces the stress on the poles when erecting.

It has withstood very high winds and on checking poles there are no evident signs of splitting, so having read about the problems others have had, I wonder if there is a quality control issue at the factory end?

There were no leaks on any seams and the ventilation arrangments were largely okay. I did surmise that the internal pelmet was interfering with air circulation through the tent so I undid it and this certainly reduced the condensation gathering over the bedroom. Which brings me to my next point - this is our first all-in-one full SIG type tent, and whilst we can see many advantages, we did spot that the bedroom is going to get wet when dropping the tent with condensation inside (On our other tents we can reomve the bedroom and pack it away dry). So that is one to watch out for.

Also, given a slight slope and change in wind direction we had a bit of a flood through the front door in heavy rain. We worked out that we had

A)not zipped the door completely down on that side

And

B) not ensured that the folded up edge of the grounsheet lip was properly tucked inside the door flap; it had jutted out enough to act like a spout directing water in.

We had loads of space for the two of us and the bedroom is big enough to be able to orient the bed in whatever direction is dictated by slope. The sky lights and windows on the front make it very light, and the full mesh doors were absolutely crucial when camping on the fly infested shores of Lough Neagh! This was one of the features that led me to choose this tent over other models in the first place, and I was not disappointed.

We found the addition of the footprint groundsheet to be invaluable in the very squelchy conditions and really don't know what we would have done without it.

We used our own tarp awning with it and this protected the front door from rain ingress when using the door, and gave some shelter for cooking.

All in all this is a value-fo-money touring tent and we were very happy with its performance in very wet and windy conditions.Check out the pic in our gallery to see it in action!

Sorry folks, but I am not that impressed with tent. Used for the first time this weekend, nearly had a breakdown with it. Pitching instructions not easy to follow, not convinced of its surviving strong winds. Wish I had bought something else.

We have just used our Orchy 600 for the 1st time and I have got to say what a good tent. We already own a Vango Aspen 500 Dlx which we also love, but were looking for something smaller but not too small and quicker to pitch for the shorter stays. The Orchy fits the bill perfect 30 mins all done on the 1st occasion was bob on. A cracking Tent.

Fab Tent, just got back from Verwood this weekend so had blistering sun, torrential rain and extremely strong winds! We are novice campers, and my wife likes her luxury. So camping was always going to be testing to say the least :) We got there in brilliant sunshine and I set up mainly on my own( my wife helped hold the structure upright to get the 2 long poles in and up (as per the excellent pitching instruction DVD supplied). She had her hands full with our 18month year old, who saw the swings and therefore my wife was otherwise engaged! Anyway, I pitched the tent - something I haven't done for 20 years and was well impressed by the ease of it. It took me about 1hr 20mins all in. We had the footprint groundsheet and the carpet, all from Vango and was impressed with everything bar the carpet (had pull marks and areas that were thread bare! - not what I would call quality and hard wearing)This is obviously only a minor disappointment as the tent was fab, it honestly took all weather types in its stride and even a friend (with a Karsten tent) said he was impressed at how it stood up to the weather. The mozy nets on the doors are ace, stop the bugs but let in the air. The living space is nice and generous the sleeping area (which we kept as one big area rather than insert the separate divider) was more than adequate for a double air bed and travel cot with three bags of stuff, wouldn't want to try and get 6 in there though! The sewn in groundsheet was a must as the campsite flooded where we were and we were nice and dry unlike some others. The only hitch and it is a minor one that I can think of is that the doors tend to slope backwards and when its 'cats and dogs' weather when you open the zips to get in/out, the carpet / inside gets wet.

Hence 9/10. A fabulous first time tent

My 13 year old son and I pitched this tent very easily even though neither of us are very experienced. Love the windows in the sky! Packed away pretty easily and went back into its neat little bag. Now desperate to go away to try the tent for a whole week. Could have done with the poles for the front door.

By: Green Tent Girl  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 24/06/2008

I am so happy with this tent, it withstood some hefty gales and rain when camping in North Wales last weekend - and this was despite incorrectly angled guy ropes at the front. We realised this when we got home and watched the instruction dvd! Ha ha.

This is such a practical and cosy tent in bad weather. I am 5'9' tall, my other half is over 6' and we had plenty of headroom in the dome area - lots of space and it is just perfect in the versatility of its lounge area with big windows and two main doors. Luckily we did not need to purchase king poles to make an entrance canopy - they fitted neatly onto the poles of the windbreak we took with us - a clever idea from my partner.

I love the windows in the roof of the lounge area - it makes the tent cheerful and bright even in overcast weather. We have the laurel and sage colour tent and it is a nice colour combination to 'live with.' I tend to find blue tents quite gloomy.

This tent is so well designed. The mesh vents and the drop-down ground sheet at the door entrances work really well. The guy rope velcro holders are a neat idea.

We had no water seepage despite continual rain Saturday morning, Saturday night and into Sunday and it inspired a lot of confidence. I can't wait to go camping again - weekend after next!

By: Floss03  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 18/06/2008

I am the proud owner of a Laurel & Sage Orchy 600 purchased in May and used over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. We found the tent was REALLY nice and roomy, but did have to buy 'King Poles' separately to put up the main door canopy.

The tent held up really well in the gales, the only place we found water coming in was through the top of the side entrance - where the wind lifted the zip cover and a small amount of water dripped through the zip, a well placed piece of velcro would stop this in the future.

We did find water ingressing through the groundsheet in the main living area, but at this point the tent was sitting in a pitch flooded to approx 2 inches. I must say Gaynor Sports were excellent they delivered a new Orchy & collected the old the following day!

The only reason we haven't awarded 10/10 is because we haven't had chance to test it again in the rain. Let's hope we don't have to.

Unsuitable for strong winds.

Our tent was one of the first to be damaged at the campsite, despite pitching it according to instructions.

All poles except one suffered damage.

Yes, the winds were very strong when we packed away, but the first damage was in normal weather, on the first night of usage.

We have used our Vango DD300 for over 13 years, no problems, in all weathers, and a Khyam family tent for a year with some rough weather.

The doors have insufficient velcro tabs (too short, too big a distance) to keep the flap shut against the wind, so rain could enter through the zip.

Altogether a big disappointment for our first Vango family tent experience.

By: Flutterbye  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 31/05/2008

Used it for the first time this holiday as our small family tent, to use on sites that don't allow our big one, or for weekends. All good reports from us. Did very well with heavy rain. We're still trying to find a suitable canopy to put on it to cook in if it rains. Recommended.

We just got Vango Orchy 600 I love its design and the grape and dove colour. We had a few fellow campers come over and say it was a nice tent and unusual colour. The living area is big enough for 4 as is the bedroom we fitted a queen size double airbed in for wife and youngest girl and a triple height single bed for me me with enough room to walk in between them. My only gripe is why is there no ehu entrance. Me and the wife pitched it quite quickly and it fits easily into the bag when packing away , the sky view windows are a nice touch I cant praise it enough

Very easy to erect - all in one. Spacious Living area in Dome. Got all the hooks and pockets I need. Bedroom large enough although I dont think I would ever have 6 in there! Seems well made. All in all good value for money.

Easy to errect with colour coded poles and sleeves. Very spacious, good head room in the living area. SIG makes it very cosy and keeps the bugs at bay!with the ability to drop the ground sheet at the doors preventing tripping. Easy to pack away and bag is a very generous size. Lots of useful pockets around the tent and a hanging point for a lantern. Lots of matching accessories are available.

Only down side is it was the first time my friends had used their new tent and it had a rip in the mesh of the bed pod and will have to be returned for a replacement.
