Bought this year and now three weeks in it over seven pitches from the Alps to Yorkshire.

We are family of three and this tent is ideal. Size is perfect, the sleeping area with divider lifted is generous, adequate for bags as well as the three of us. The tent packs small enough to fit easily into the car boot.

I have found it to be very fast and easy to rig and stable in strong winds (more later). One single quick over-nighter in a wooded quiet site, I used only four pegs and that was just fine. (Otherwise advise pegging everything soundly in the wind!).

The large windows are great, letting in plenty of light, and the awning, although smallish has certainly kept all the rain from entering whilst going in and out (We always pitched facing downwind).

The fully sewn in groundsheet is great, and a massive improvement on a previous ten year old Vango which had massive draughts all round. If there is one downside to this, it makes drying the tent tricky, but OK on a sunny road or patio. I would strongly advise the footprint groundsheet which collects the dirt & worms and will take the wear. It also keeps the tent cleaner when packed.

Tips are to always leave the doors open when rolling it up (so no problems with trapped air inside).

Problems: Probably acceptable, but one extremely windy turbulent night in Yorkshire on an exposed site, there was so much thrashing that by morning the bigger of the two flexible poles above had fractured. (This was the same night that three kids were hospitalized in the Lakes when their tent went for a walk, so it was quite something.). Everything 100% rigged properly so it was just the extreme flexing. I was disappointed in this. The poles look strong with the 'Durawrap', but I think the spiral wrap finish is it's more for cosmetics. (I have epoxied this split pole together and spiral wrapped with carbon fibre tow and epoxy. Should be fine now: Spares cost £30 for a set.

Also in extreme winds, it might be nice of the side vents above the windows had more than teeny bits of velcro to close them: Ventilation left open is very important most of the time, but in 40MPH winds, it would be better to be able to batten down the hatches a little more thoroughly.

I am also unconvinced that the plastic pegs will last, but so far we have not encountered much stony ground and they are holding up very well.

Just used the Outwell Birdland M for the first time. I got it pitched on my own in about 20 mins (not including all the guys) on quite a gusty day without problem. The only rain I had while away was one squall when it rained and blew hard but the tent took it all in its stride.

The quality seemed good and living space was excellent for 1 person and would be perfectly adequate for 2 and a child but above that I think it would be tight. The bedroom had plenty of space for a double mattress plus a toilet, cases etc. With enough headroom for me to just stand up (5' 10') in the centre, at the front.

The only door had a zip across the bottom to make a complete seal and also a zipped net for those warm nights. Perhaps the 2 downsides I can see at present are firstly there is limited ventilation and the front door net might well be needed on warm nights, secondly the door only has a 'J' shaped zip so opening as a stable type door is only possible at a diagonal which I think you would need to do in wet conditions as the door canopy looks like it would be unlikely to always protect the bottom half of door from rain driving in.

I also pitched the extension which again I did on my own in gusty conditions by first clipping it to the tent and then fitting the Duratec poles and then pulling out and securing with the front guys. This is not the way the instructions advise but seemed to work well. I think the extension, which gives an extra 2m of covered space, will be a big bonus for cooking etc. When there are 2 of us using the tent. The extension also stood up well to the gusty winds and there is a good seal between the tent and it for those wet days.

Think we might have found a good compromise of a tent for me to use on my own for a short break and for the two of us, with the extension up, on longer stays.
