6 Reviews of the Iris 500

As previously mentioned this is now the Iris V 500.

Bought to test to see if me and the wife still liked to go camping (both camped as kids but not as adults). Tent is easy to erect and the fabric is quite tough.

Camped in some horrific wet weather and not a drop of rain has come through. As with most polyester tents condensation can be an issue - if you are all sat in the tent for hours whilst raining you will probably get condensation and if the weather pretty bad this can then fly off the flysheet in a mist making it seem like water ingress. There are plenty of vents and if dry in the morning just crack the doors open and it soon clears.

Though this is 5 man, we use it as a roomy 3 man tent with no issues.

As we enjoyed our trips with this tent we have upgraded to a canvas dutch pyramid tent for future trips but will be retaining this tent for spare or for friends to borrow.

A good relatively cheap first family tent.

The tent I have is the 2015 model, recently renamed the 'Iris' for obvious reasons! I am reviewing it after our first camping trip with it.

We chose this model because it and it's predecessor, the Icarus, had been well reviewed. We wanted something bigger than the backpacker tents we'd used in the past, something we could sit comfortably in during inclement weather.

The tent has a living space, which is pretty big and can take all your gear, plus table and chairs. There are plenty of windows in this area of the tent so it can be as bright and airy as you want. The tent has a front and a side door if you want additional air.

There are 1/2 bedrooms, depending on whether you use the divider. We didn't as we are only 2 adults. Also, we have a Posadas campbed, which is quite large and you'd struggle to fit it in one room. With the campbed up though, we had ample room at the bottom of the bed for our clothes, toiletries etc. Overall, the tent felt very spacious for 2 people, but as ever, 5 would be stretching it unless your children were all tiny. I'd say the tent is perfect for 2 people who want a bit of luxury and would be very comfortable if you had 1 child.

Pitching is relatively straightforward. There are 3 poles, which are a pain to get in, but once you've mastered that, the rest is easy. You pitch the outer sheet and then the inner hooks in. When pitched, the tent is sturdy with plenty of guy ropes and hoops for nailing yourself down.

There is a strip of pockets in the lounge area, which are great for bits and bobs. In terms of hooks, there are a good number, although not always exactly where you want them. In the bedroom, all the hooks are high up. We wanted to hang a small LED light where we could switch it off whilst lying down in bed. However, there wasn't an appropriate hook. You can never have too many hooks in a tent so I don't know why the makers don't just put them everywhere. However, that's a small niggle. This is a great tent at a very cheap price. We paid £250, but you can get the tent for about £230 even in the summer if you shop around and are happy to wait a few weeks.

We also bought the footprint, which fits the tent perfectly. We'll probably also buy the carpet soon. There's an extension, but we don't really need the space and I'd actually prefer an open canopy that was suitable for gas cooking. Unfortunately, Vango doesn't do one for this tent but there's a Hi Gear canopy with similar height and width that we may try. Come on Vango - give us a matching canopy! :-)

In all I'd definitely recommend this tent, especially for returners to camping who are looking for space and good value, but don't want to break the bank before ensuring they are in it for the long haul.

Much better than my much loved Vango icarus 400. Nice mozzy net doors and more weather resistant front door. Inner tent can be removed for cleaning. Owned this tent for a year and used it in all weathers. Condensation can be a bit on a problem but that's what you get with synthetic materials. All in all a lot of tent for your money

This is a great family tent. It stood up well to some pretty hefty wind and was totally dry. There seems to be enough room for our family of four.

My only quibbles are the sloping door and the lights out bed room is not really any different to any other tent that I have been in.

I'm happy with this tent and look forward to using it again soon.

Pitched this solo, as a novice female camper. It took me approx. 30 minutes in stormy conditions. Overall impressions were favourable to start with, was spacious and roomy, but then began to notice fraying on the door panels. Air vents didn't appear to do the job very well, as I found condensation on the inner every morning. Unimpressed with the 'lights out,' selling feature, some marketing gimmick as it did not live up to the description, rather it just diffused day-light. It is a functional tent but can't help but think, equally I would have been satisfied with the cheaper Icarus model.

We got this tent for our recent camping trip in Scotland and it was fantastic. We stayed for 5 nights and it rained heavily every day. The tent did not let one drop of water in. The air vents and the 2 large doors let plenty of air in to get rid of condensation. It's very easy to pitch and the peg in points with the adjustable straps keep things tight the guy lines stayed tight throughout the whole stay. I have stayed in an icarus 500 before and the isis is almost identical.
