User Reviews of the Ontario 8

It Is an fantastic tent with loads of room also plenty of head height a six foot person would be able to stand upright We have had no problems with it even when we encountered a heavy downpour and very high winds.Very easy to erect it took us under one hour the first time we used it. We've now pitch it in less than twenty minutes We have just purchased a sun porch to go with it this year which only cost us 25.00 in the kyham winter sale. I would recommend this tent

I bought this tent as a second lighter weight tent for quick weekends away. What a fantastic tent. Loads of room to sit and relax inside if the weather is not too good, even with 3 children. We have the sun awning for the tent too which we use to store the stove, etc. And provies a good area to kick off our muddy shoes. The tent held up well with windy weather.

The only one, very small criticism is that the groundsheet is not sewn in completely around the doors, and having a small dog, she could escape!

All in all, a fantastic tent, and I could be tempted to sell our other tent and just use this one!

It love this tent! It gives us (family of 4) loads of flexibility, with the option of adding/removing sleeping pods. The huge living area has a high enough ceiling for an adult to stand comfortably. The only thing we miss is a porch to take off muddy boots (although I see a note that the latest model includes this). It has withstood some pretty blustery weather and some very heavy rain, without any leakage.

After borrowing a tent for a weekend away we caught the camping bug , a friend recommended khyam tents and I decided on this one ! A quick trip to the local scout hut for a dry run (it was raining an wanted to check it was all there etc)putting it up , completely pegged out bedrooms buttoned it took about an hour! Taking it down was a doddle even went back in the supplied bag

Used this tent for the first time in the last week of August in Cornwall, it survived Gale Force winds with no breaks and no tears, other tents were ripping and blowing away. Have to give this tent 10/10. I have got a few little niggles no inner mesh on doors to stop the bugs getting in, also I would of liked to see zipped bedroom dividers. On the whole a great tent with plenty of room.

I love this tent! We have just returned from our 3rd camping trip, 6 nights in Somerset (second trip with this tent). We mostly had good weather but one night had heavy rain and winds, there were no leaks and I felt confident that the tent would keep us dry. The SIG is great for stopping drafts and bugs I would def always go for a SIG now. We were a party of 5, 2 adults and 3 teenagers and had plenty of space, the option of 3 pods gives flexibility for setting up the sleeping arrangements and the largest pod is very roomy. We take so many extras with us like duvets instead of sleeping bags but this tent never feels overcrowded or over stuffed. I did notice that when we were taking down the tent one of the poles had split but am confident that it can be repaired or replaced (this might have had more to do with the tiny pitch that we had been squeezed onto - so putting this down to the quality of the campsite/pitch rather than the tent). Can't wait for the next trip.

Have just come back from a week in Wales, weather was very hit and miss. Had a really stormy night when tent woke me up as it hit me! Extremely windy and lots of rain. Tent has withstood it all (found one split pole - but easily repairable/replaceable) Only comment would be get better pegs than provided, as guy ropes just kept coming loose on windy night, thus making tent sway in wind. Plenty of room for the 4 of us and didn't suffer any leaks - great tent overall

A very good tent, plenty of room for the 5 of us (2 Adults and 3 Children). Very sturdy and reliable even in strong winds of 40mph, we erected it in 30mins and took it down in 20 - 30mins and we got it all back in the bag first time. Overall we were very pleased with it and would recommend this tent.

By: Mkpearl  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 15/08/2009

Easy to put up and because it is an outer pitched first can be put up in the rain. Was a bit more difficult to take down in high winds and a small boy had to be employed to sit on it between being unpegged and packed up. Roomy for six of us. We also have the sun porch which gave us somewhere to take off shoes in the rain. Takes about 30-45 mins to put up.

Fab tent!

Hubby would only agree to buy a tent if we got a one he could stand up and move around in, this fits the bill. (used to have a caravan, and love the fact you can leave the beds made up unlike a caravan)

Seems massive compared to other tents next to it, but you can take everything with you (as we do!)

There's only 4 of us and seems daft having 8-man tent but looking at reviews most are from same size family as ours.

Easy to put up and put away, although instructions on how to fold up rather than erect would be useful. Went back in bag quite easily, although bag ripped on one seam, prob because we pulled too hard on the strap!

Love the SIG as keeps damp and bugs out!

We don't use one of the smaller bedrooms making the most of the additional floor space.

We haven't had bad weather when using yet so can't comment on that.

Haven't got any add-ons but looking at other reviews may look at what available on website.

At 1st felt few draughts in bedrooms at night, even though end ventilation flaps had been closed, maybe was a windier night?

Just used again this w/e and considered buying a smaller tent as only drawback is have to pay more at some sites for large tents and for last minute bookings some sites don't have space for it, BUT after using it really can't be doing with having to cope in a smaller tent so will be definitely keeping it.

Love it.

Used the Khyam Ontario 8 for he first time last weekend in the new forest. Was really pleased with it. Especially with the carpet. My dog ripped the flysheet with his paw (annoying) but we shouldn't have let him touch it.

Putting up and taking down was ok, bag is a tight fit but we have managed it everytime so far (practice runs in garden. There is loads of room and seems quiet secure. Could have done with some hardcore pegs though, but that wasn't the tents fault, more the campsite.

By: Wilks  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2006   Rating:   Date: 18/06/2009

We wanted to upgrade to a more roomier tent than our previous Coleman Ridgeline & one with a SIG, & after looking at many reviews we went for the Ontario 8. It meets our requirements exactly for a family of 4 and we love it!

Easy for 2 people to erect with the bonus of not having to place fly sheet first, took about 45mins inc. Pegging out. The standing room it gives in both the main living area & the bedrooms make it spacious. We used our double Raised Aerobed in the main bedroom and still had room on each side of the bed to move & store bags. The children like the idea of sleeping separately, again with plenty of room but also the separate pods will also fit a double airbed. We also have the footprint which helps with pegging out & added insulation. Included with the tent was the zip-up porch, useful for storage, sitting out of the wind and kitchen purposes - although we did find the porch a little unstable in very strong winds. The tent withstood some heavy rain one night which we hardly even noticed, no leaks or draughts & didn't rock once.

At first we had problems with getting it back in the bag but with practice it has got easier and bag it with bungee grips.

Hard to beat for value and a neat tent, will fit on most pitches due to tunnel design. Highly recommended

Our first tent so nothing to compare against but have been away in it twice now and had no problems at all.

Very quick and easy to put up and take down and a really good family tent with loads of space inside to sit when it rains. The carpet is a must-have but I would think carefully about the additional porch before buying. I helped a friend try to put his up and we actually gave up when we saw how little extra it would give for the massive effort it took to put up!

Have now given up all hope of ever getting the tent all back in the bag and will get another bag for the poles, pegs and internal pods just for sanity's sake but I guess that may be common to a lot of other tents too.

By: Mwebster12  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 30/05/2009

Put this up on my own in the garden in no wind and no rain. Needed a second person to help when had to put this up in the pouring rain and the third time it was windy so needed a second person again. So have had both heavy rain and strong winds and the tent is still surviving, as are we, it hasn't out us off.

Bought an extra groundsheet which helps when marking out where it will be placed. Also the carpet is well worth having.

Nearly managed to put it back in the bag on the last trip, have managed it when we got home.

Very spacious tent, no leaks etc. Our first ever tent and it has proved to be a great but/family tent.

By: Captainlard  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 28/05/2009

Got one online for £125 as it sells as a factory second. Couldn't see any problem with it once we put it up and used it for the first time this weekend. Very straightforward to both pitch and then take down. It is massive too and easily took 4 kids, me and my wife. Would thoroughly recommend this tent for someone looking for a big family tent. Have given it 8 just cos I haven't yet had the chance to see how it goes in heavy rain or high wind.

Excellent Tent. Love the sowed inner floor, easier to put up and warmer too.

I am such a dumbo when it comes to tents, but this one for the size of it, is so easy to put up.

We got back from a weekend away and one morning was heavy rain and very windy, the tent managed that very well, no leakages.

We used it a few times last year too.

We cant wait to go again, lovely spacious tent. We use the main pod, 1 king size bed and 1 double bed, both fit easy.

By: WendleC  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 24/05/2009

Bought this tent yesterday and put it straight up when we got home. Can't believe how easy this tent was to put up - took us about 40 mins without properly reading the instructions and just going from the basic instructions from the salesman!

We slept well - only woken by the dawn chorus at 4am! But can't blame the tent for that.

We bought the extra ground sheet as well (to help protect the SIG from stones and mud), but found it useful to show where the tent was going to fit in the garden.

Have already booked our first trip next weekend.

I have just bought the 2008 model and I love it. We have just come back from a weekend away. There were 8 of us. 4 Children in the big main pod and 2 adults in each of the 2 small pods.

The tent was very quick to erect. We also bought the sun porch which took longer to erect than the main tent!

It rained overnight on our first night and there were no leaks. The bedroom pods are roomy I love the standing height.

I would recommend this tent to anyone. Hubby even managed to get it back into the bag on the first attempt!

By: Nevzab  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 23/04/2009

We love this tent. We are a family of 5 (3 children under 12yrs). There is lots of space in sleeping areas and more than enough space in the living area, even with all three bedrooms being used. Fairly straight forward to erect (a min of 2 adults) took us about 40mins. We managed to put back into the bag.1st time too! Lots of extras to buy ie ground sheet, carpet, sun porch and wind breakers.

Great value for money.

This tent is perfect for our needs, long weekends away with family and friends.

By: Sally 42  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 20/04/2009

2 adults 2 teenagers

First tent we have owned And we LOVE it! Plenty of room, bought an awning and carpet this made it very comfortable. The awning was great for cooking and leaving wet boots etc. The carpet made it snug and protected the groundsheet. Couldn't get it back in the bag though!

By: Tinaat  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 29/03/2009

We found this a fantastic tent, had smaller ones before with no room to stand etc, but there is enough room in this for 2 adults and 3 kids to all stand and sit in just the living area! We have a table / chairs and stove and side table out in our one so it really is like a home from home.
Really easy for my partner and I to put up even in the wind, but trickier to take down in strong wind, last time we went it was like we were flying the tent as a kite, but once down and folded each time we've managed to get it into the original bag with all the bits inside too.
Very compact folded for 8 berth tent. Very good price too was on special so was less than £200, would like the carpet though havent got that yet as does get cold on ground, however no rain gets in at all even in really bad weather, superb!

By: Boxa  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 12/02/2009

Have looked through some of the different reviews here and the only 2 things I disagree on are putting the tent up and packing it away. I found putting the tent up pretty easy and quick, the only time taking bit is the pegging it out and getting it perfectly pitched out otherwise it was easy and I was able to near enough do most of it on my own. Packing the tent up is a little tricky at first but once you have done it a couple of times it gets easy. If you are having problems though then you can always buy a bigger tent bag one on wheels.

We bought a new car for our whole camping holiday adventures so decided to buy a new tent to go with it, we had a Coleman trailblazer before, which was a good tent but drafty due to the porch not being connected to the flysheet. So we took a trip down to a large camping store we sometimes use (camping intl) we looked about for a reasonably large tent for under £200 that had a all in one ground sheet and flysheet so to stop drafts. Found the Khyam Ontario 8 and decided it was great for what we needed as our family seems to be getting bigger and the tent would be perfect for a todler eventually to run around in. The great thing was the price, all the other tents of the same size were about £300 plus whereas we managed to get this one for just under £200 so far no problems with the tent, it's great we even bought a hoover for it so to keep it clean and dirt free! will be buying the carpet for it this year too and maybe a few other extras, just the whole flysheet connected to the ground sheet is superb, we had some bad weather last year in the New Forest but all rain and large puddles around the tent didn't get through and the cold was kept at bay by not letting the drafts in.

By: Big_hairy_rob  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 21/01/2009

Wow, this is a great tent to have if going on holiday in a large ish group. The inbuilt groundsheet means that its more waterproof than the larger tents, and this along makes up for any problems. If you have an garden large enough to put it up and test for defects before going on holiday! sadly we found a few holes in ours but that was nothing that some heavy duty industrial tape couldn't solve. This tent has two individual pods, perfect for those happy couples, or if less of you are going, then you can remove individual pods to make storage for other things. The central area was more than large enough for 6 large adults to sit around a camp table, however I would suggest getting a rug as sharp legs can go straight through the groundsheet! The four man compartment would indeed sleep 4 successfully, however the separation is a flimsy see through thing that doesn't really serve any purpose

The central section I should add is more than tall enough for your average 6'2' human so that also helps. One major negative. This tent was horrendous to get down and away when in the rain. Admittedly we dont plan to go away in the rain, so be advised that if its windy or if its wet you will struggle getting this, or any large tent in a bag. For its price it slept 6 very comfortably!

We bought our Khyam Ontario 8 this year and used it only during the few very hot days at the end of July. It was easy to put up and pack away. As it was so hot, we would have liked to be able to peg the side windows open,(like the bedroom ones,) for extra ventilation and have an extra fly sheet over the centre section to keep it cool. Fly screens for the doors would also have been nice. We also bought the carpet and sun porch, which made this a very luxurious and spacious tent for 2 adults and 2 children.

By: JUMPJET  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 11/10/2008

We brought this tent in June 2008,and used it on our camping trip to Sennen near Lands End in August 08.

Weather was typical bank holiday weather rain, mist and wind.

2 adults and 6 children,we fitted into this tent comfortably(using the bedrooms as well),we also purchased the sun porch and used this as our kitchen area.We also purchased the carpet which added extra insulation on the floor.

We highly recommend this tent.

Easy to put up/down.

Took a couple of attempts to get in original bag,but once in it was fine.

By: GregW  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 15/09/2008

Bought this August 2008 to replace our original. Well and truly tested in high winds and rain - not a bother! the sewn in ground sheet stopped water ingress etc and was almost draft free. In the wind it did move about as all tents would but it stayed put.

We only just got this in time for the weekend so was worried about putting it up - took 2 adults 30-40 mins only and all watertight!

Height inside - it's massive. I'm 5'9 and could stand in the middle with arms fully extended up and only just touch the roof

The kids stayed in the end pods which offered us some privacy and a good sleeping area all round.

If I could give it more than 10/10 I would. - well worth getting it.

These are the best tents in the range, bought mine for 199.99. The additional porch is a gimmick, and doesnt fit as well as had hoped. The tent is an amazing starter tent, stands up to almost anything. Is one of the lightest 8 berth tents, due to the simple design. Not the easiest to get back in the bag, but when folded properly looks great. Would definitely buy the carpet just finishes the feel of the tent and creates an easy livable tent! But would recommend buying in 08 as they are getting expensive next year

By: H 55  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 27/08/2008

Excellent tent, really easy to put up/down - we can even get it back into the bag it came in. Tip - buy luggage straps to use instead of the ties which come with it. Plenty of room, living space excellent in bad weather. Double doors really useful for ventilation in hot weather. Has withstood heavy rain and wind without problem. Only downside is lack of porch for sheltered cooking but we bought the 'sun porch' which worked great and was easy to put up/down.

We have just returned from a holiday in Cornwall. Myself, partner and two teenage girls spent a week in this tent. Weather at times was very wet and windy and the tent was wonderful.

Took less that half an hour to get the tent up and secured then another half hour to fit the insides properly.

The tent is huge, plenty of space for us all. We used one of the pods for a storage/ changing area.

I would highly recommend this tent to any family.

I love it

Upgraded our tent and chose the Ontario 8. Just got back from a weeks holiday and just loved the tent. Easy to put up. Roomy. Versatile. 2 adults, 2 kids (kids loved having a private pod each!) Loved, the built in groundsheet (previous tents always drafty and allowed rain to seep through) Plenty of extra guy ropes/pegs. An all round fab family tent. It rained loads during our week away and no probs with leaking. Was great to have a living space to dive into when it rained. Many a happy night spent round a table playing cards!

By: Richclare  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2007   Rating:   Date: 13/08/2008

We bought the tent in the summer of 2007 as we wanted a bigger one (you always want the next best one!).

We took it out for the first time beginning of August (2008). As commented by most the tent was easy to erect and only took us 45 minutes - wow and this was in minor windy conditions. We did not argue either, great tent!

The tent stood well so we decided to take it out the weekend after as we wanted to make the most of it. We went to a local site and pitched it the day before we were due to stay as we had work and did not want to waste the Friday night. This time it took us 22 minutes and lets just say GOOD. The heavens opened and it was thundering & lightning, the site had never experienced anything like it (flash floods!). The tent with the built in ground sheet was a god send - what an experience but most of all what a fantastic tent. We recommend this one to everyone. Our downfall was we could not fit everything back in the bag either, we think we may have cracked it for our 3rd and final camp trip of the year (August bank holiday).

This is the first tent I have owned! We purchased this in early july and took it straight from shop to the local scout field to erect it [Was a lovely day for it!]

It really was quite simple to erect, and we even managed to get it back in the bag.

First 3-night camp yielded the same result. About 1 hour to erect the basic tent, and we used some cheap B&Q Tarpaulin to add an extra layer under the SIG [Sown-In-Groundsheet]

We had a little rain and wind and this offered no problems to the tent. Head high is great and the space inside is most welcome.

All in all a great tent at a great price!

Very spacious tent, used it for my first outing with the kids 7yrs and 15mth, my girlfriend and her mother, easy enough to put up and pack up. Would recommend to others, could have done with some external shelter either the add on that is available or a gazebo all in all though a great bit of kit!

By: Hounddoghull  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 09/08/2008

We love this tent. 2 adults, 2 kids and the dog all fit in no problem.

We have the added luxury of the carpet and the sun porch (the newer style with the door) which are absolutely fantastic and highly recommended. We use the sun porch as a kitchen and one of the bedroom pods as a bathroom/changing room - what luxury. We have repacked it in its originally bag 3 times, and although tight it is possible.

By: Beckmeghan  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 31/07/2008

Bought this tent in May and have been away twice using it for weekends. It is an excellent tent, absolutely massive! We have 2 children who share one bedroom, we have the large bedroom and then the other bedroom we use for storage and to put the porta loo in - excellent!

We have the matching carpet and sun porch too so all in all quite a luxurious experience!

We found this tent pretty easy to erect and take down but as in most reviews on this site there was no way it was going back in the tent bag (hence the 9/10 rating).

When originally buying this tent we considered some that were much more expensive but for under £200 this tent is a bargain.

All in all I would strongly recommend this tent, we originally bought this just for weekends but are now seriously considering a much longer trip.

We are new to camping and got this tent last year. Went away recently and had heavy rain and strong winds. Managed to pitch the tent in about an hour (1st attempt). We had no problems despite the weather, tent stood up really well. Acres of space and cosy inside. It is a must that you buy decent tent pegs before you go! ones with the tent are pretty useless if very windy.Love the tent but we couldn't get it back into one bag! no major problem we just got another bag for the the pods. Highly recommend.

This is a brilliant tent and is easy to put up and to take down and put in the same bag! ( Fold the tent in half long ways and half again, put the poles in there bag and place at the bottom of your folded tent, roll as tight as you can and put the tent in its bag. Fold your bedrooms into a small rectangle and hey presto all three bedrooms go in the bag on top of your tent and zip the zip easy ! and we were beginners. It was torrential rain and blowing a gale it did not rain in or blow away. TIP! Rock pegs are the way forward normal pegs are useless on hard ground and your tent will become unstable in the wind. At 35pence each they are a must have

By: Slodge123  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2007   Rating:   Date: 19/06/2008

Used this tent 3 times this year, very good, really easy to erect. However if its windy this tent becomes quite unstable, its alright saying pitch into wind but what happens when the direction changes? Had no problem at all getting it back in the bag.

I got 1 of these and well what can I say. It's easy to put up or down and as for space wow where did that lot come from. When you leave the 2 smaller rooms out you need a mobile to speak to person at other side lol

Overall I'd recommend this to any person you won't be disappointed

Great tent! We bought this last year as newbies to camping. Have used it twice so far and planning a longer summer trip. Great size, easy to put up!

We have 2 children who sleep in the same compartment together so we only put up the 2 x2 sleep pods. There is loads of space especially in wet weather when our tent is used by our friends as a chill out space or banqueting hall!

And I have managed to get it back into the tent bag on both occasions!(There are instructions I found somewhere on this site about how to pack it away)

Recommend it to all!

Fantastic tent I go away with my partner and 2 dogs and find this tent very suitable. But would love instructions on how to repack into original bag this is the only problem I have with it.

A fantastic family tent. We needed a bigger tent when we had a baby and realised just how much extra 'stuff' we would need to take with us.

Very easy to pitch, takes 2 of us approx 20 mins including putting the bedrooms in. Loads of inside space which was a real bonus when it inevitably rained on both our longer trips last year, and we had a stir crazy almost toddler pushing his cars around on the floor.

The only thing it lacks is a porch, but Khyam have upgraded last year's sun canopy to a proper porch and can highly recommend this addition!

We bought this after needing more space. Make no mistake this tent massive and with only two of us you do get some funny looks! its a well made tent and no real faults. If there is only two of you (unlikely if buying atent of this size, unless you mad like us!) you really need to be experienced in putting it up. If its windy and there is less than 3 of you it can be a struggle. All in all a great tent with loads of room.

Absolutely love this tent.

It's easy to erect and it gives you acres of living space, with 3 decent sized bedroom pods (which are removable should you want even more day time room) and good head height throughout.

The SIG keeps the bugs and drafts out and helps keep wayward toddlers in!

The additional purchase of the sun porch and carpet make this a real home from home, either for short breaks or longer stays.

My only gripe is the bag it came in is fine until you actually unpack the tent. There was NO WAY I could get it to fit back in, so we had to invest in a much larger bag.

Overall, I would recommend this tent to anyone wanting a good quality, easy to use unit at a very reasonable price.

I made the mistake of bringing back an Eddie Bauer tent that we had used in the US for beach camping trips. First time out on Exmoor it took about 10 minutes before the tent leaked and started to flood. So I bought the Ontario which we camped in last year in real comfort and in real rain. Perfect for a family of four (I always divide the suggested number of sleepers by 2). Easy to put up and loads of space and headroom. My only criticism is that once out of the supplied bag, it is not humanly possible to get it back in, so I have bought a much bigger bag with wheels. And the SIG is a real plus too.

A great all round family tent, easy to erect and a massive amount of living space especially for those rainy nights inside, and saying that it has withstood some real good old British weather!

The only fault we have had is one of the glass fibre poles breaking, though Khyam customer support sent me a whole new kit free of charge!

Great customer service!

I would recommend Khyam to anyone.
