We had one of these without a sewn in groundsheet. On the third camping trip it leaked. The design was awful, the flysheet stretched so filled with water and the window side 'flap things' (could see no use for them except to make the whole thing thoroughly unwieldy in bad weather) just filled with water and caught the wind. It was really cold, horribly heavy and difficult to pitch. All in all a bad design we felt. In the second week of our holiday last year it actually blew away. Went back, with our family of four, to our lovely but ancient Vango diablo 400- great design and weatherproof. Looking at getting a 600 for next year.

We were so impressed when we saw this tent on display that we immediately upgraded and bought one! If you are looking for a modern equivalent of a frame tent this is it - massive headroom throughout makes for a very comfortable camping trip, you can even stand up in the bedrooms which is a real bonus for those of us who are tall or past crouching down! There are 3 separate bedrooms sleeping 2,2&3 - we have a double airbed in the 3 person one which leaves room to walk round it, store your luggage etc, or in our case room for the dog too!

The living area is large enough to accommodate a camping kitchen unit, fridge, 4 large chairs and a large table - plus all the usual! Nice details, SIG is great - no bugs, covered flaps for EHU cable, option of door opening at side or front, but best of all is the massive porch/awning at the front which gives a nice covered area for cooking/sitting.

Downside is the poles are really heavy! But the tent itself comes in a great bag with wheels, you can also buy a footprint ground sheet to protect the underside of the tent. Pitching is straight forward, but it can be tricky to lift into the upright position if its very windy due to the weight of the poles - but the end result is well worth it.

The Vango Vail 700 (also available as 500) (now replaced by the Amazon 600 or 800) is an excellent tent. It can sleep 7 although as a family of 5 we found it to be a good size. It is simple to erect although can be heavy to lift into an upright position, especially if it is raining whilst putting it up. We spent 3 weeks in it last summer, mostly in torrential rain, and had a tiny bit of leaking around the side door zips (this may have been sorted with the new Amazon as I notice it has a 'lip' above the side doors). It has a sewn-in groundsheet but also the front and side panels can roll up to let air in when it is hot. There are sky lights in the roof making it light inside. The bedroom pods are easy to put up, or can be folded up with the inner of the tent. The canopy is excellent and we used this area for cooking even in bad weather - we just wrapped a wind break around to box it in a bit. Due to it's shape it fit well into campsite plots (better than the tent we had previously with pods sticking out the sides). We have no urge to replace it this year so it must be good!
