User Reviews of the Horizon 6

By: LlewB  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 11/01/2010

Bought this as our first large tent last year. Spent quite a bit of time researching it and comparing various reviews.

Have since used it twice and been exposed to both good and poor weather. It is quite easy to put up (about 30-40 minutes) although some of the poles seemed a very tight fit and the bedroom pods can't be properly attached as a result.

It is very roomy inside, and we didn't regret not getting the 8 berth version. Given the second break being in strong winds and rain, we are considering purchasing a porch or canopy for next season.

Pros: We got it at a good price, it's not difficult to put up. Nice sized rooms (we did manage 2 adult and 2 infants just about in one end on our first night) and good living space. Withstood strong wind and rain.

Cons: Doesn't seem to quite fit neatly together, which let it down somewhat. Slightly concerned the bowing required for the poles to fit will affect the lifespan of this tent.

This is our first really big tent and we couldn't be happier with it!

Despite only attempting a brief go at erecting the tent part way, we were very pleasantly surprised to find our first proper go at putting up the Horizon 6 only took us about an hour (the colour-coded poles helped too). I'm sure each further attempt will see a reduction in this time. We also had the benefit of having the matching footprint which helps enormously when positioning the tent initially.

When fully pegged and guyed out the Horizon feels very sturdy and is wonderfully spacious inside. The option of 3 different entrances and the addition of the carpet in the central living area gives a very versatile and comfy living space. Also, the roof panel in the centre section lets in a huge amount of light, which is excellent for making the most of the available daylight.

The only drawback we've found is the 2 end vents to the bedrooms seem to let in a fair bit of cold air as the velcro doesn't seal right across the bottom- I'm sure this can be solved with the addition of a bit more velcro which is a job I'll get round to over the winter lol!

Overall, though, a really great tent at a good price (we paid around £200 for the tent with footprint and carpet) which I'd recommend to anyone.

Now I just have to convince the OH we really, really REALLY need the matching porch to cook in! :-D

I bought this tent from Go Outdoors online, I did a fair bit of research and this offered everything I needed for a very good price (£170).

Only used it once so far for a weekend trip. The wife hates camping but was pleasantly surprised and didnt complain once !

Reasons.

Loads of head height so no need to stoop.

Big bedrooms, big enough for 2 plus rucksacks etc or 3 people.

Side pockets for snacks etc

Plenty of living space.

Very easy to put up. Took us about 1 hour from car boot to fully setup and in the pub !

2 small gripes.

It has a built in groundsheet, great. But one end has an opening which is not fully zipped. So the dog escaped round the back of the sleeping compartment and out of the tent. Several minutes of chasing her around the site with dog biscuits and we were back in business, zipping her in the sleeping compartment instead.

Secondly already mentioned we had condensation on the morning. Not much, but enough to make it a bit of a pain putting it away as we had to dry it off first using towels.

Overall a good tent, great price, Im pleased with my choice and the dog seems happy as well.

We have just returned from a 3 week touring holiday. Our tent proved to be up to the job. It is very easy to put up even when pitching in North Wales and the wind!We also have the porch . One of the advantages of visiting four different sites we were able to experiment with the best way to site this. We tried it in the middle and over to one side.( I think that must be personal preference) and with the best place to put guys. While we were in Wales we had very strong winds and we decided to peg the straps to the porch close to the tent rather like old style storm guying. This prevented the wind from gusting under the porch as it lay on the top of the tent. Despite the very very windy weather and the heavy rain our tent stood firm.

Good points very spacious 2 large bedroom pods ( we used one as a dressing room. Sounds posh just had our bags in .LOL) good head height lovely to be able to stand up. Tent tidies handy but you have to be careful with what you put in as it will pull the tent. Extremely easy to pitch

Bad points well none really .Take spare pegs as there are just enough Double zips on bedrooms caused great hilarity as SIL couldn't work out how to get out of the bedroom pod and we were treated to a symphony of zip opening.LOL

Oh something we found helped when packing away open the zips for ehu helps get the air out

I purchased this tent after reading the reviews on this site and have not been disappointed. We wanted something reasonably priced with a bedroom at each end and the Horizon 6 fitted the bill perfectly with plenty of space for two adults and a couple of teenagers.

It is very easy to put up and take down and with a bit of practise it goes back into it's bag fairly easily.

We had one night of very windy weather but the tent stood up to heavy buffeting very well and while several other tents ended up in the onsite skip our Horizon 6 was undamaged.

We also had a couple of overnight downpours but once again the tent performed well with no leaks.

My only gripe with this tent is the ventilation.

There was usually a light sheen of condensation on the inside of the tent each morning but this soon dried and didn't cause any problems as the weather was warm and sunny during the day. If it had been raining more this may have caused more of a problem.

There are mesh panels on each end and also on both doors. The door mesh panels are full size and separate from the doors themselves which means the doors can be left open to provide ventilation while still keeping bugs out. There are also mesh panels above the windows on each side of the tent. Ideally these should be positioned below the windows as they couldn't be exposed without also exposing the windows as the flaps covering them only opened upwards. This isn't a problem during the day but doesn't give much privacy at night. Also if you leave the flaps open at night and it rains the rain will enter the tent through the mesh panels.

Other than that rather minor quibble this is an excellent tent and we intend to purchase the porch for our next trip to give us even more room.

We didn't really notice the draughts other people have mentioned but I've got the Velcro ready for next time just in case.

I can thoroughly recommend the Horizon 6 to anybody looking for a spacious, reasonably priced tent that will perform well in the typical weather we get here in the UK and we're looking forward to many more trips with it.

Have used ours 3 times now. It has rained on all 3 trips, we have had no leaks at all. Was very windy on our last trip and the tent stood up to all the wind. An easy tent to put up & take down, and there's loads of room inside for 2 adults and 3 children. We have the canopy but I will certainly buy the porch for next season. My only gripe is with the draughty doors, but some velcro soon fixed this. All in all I am well pleased and look forward to using over and over again.

By: Ali.d  Reason: I've used one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 11/08/2009

We bought this tent as a replacement for our old tent that was also gelert and we used for 8 years.

We love it, easy to put up and take down. We got the footprint which makes pitching so simple as you can see where you are going and in high winds you can put some pegs in before the poles.

The only problem that we have noticed on our last trip it has had 4 trips so far this season is on one of the pole sleeves there is a tear, we think this has happened during the high winds with both poles rubbing against each other the metal sleeve connector on the poles has pinched and tore the fabric.

But the tent has been great in sun rain and wind. We use the back pod for storage as there is a draft from the door is really bad weather. We do use delta pegs if the wind picks up, so haven't had the problem with pegs.

The carpet is lovely makes it feel much warmer.

Overall really happy with the tent.

Maybe we will get the poach next!

By: Maxste  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 06/08/2009

Tried out and thoroughly tested this tent recently for our very first family camping holiday, two adults and two children, plenty of space. The tent was easy to erect and went up a dream with no problems at all, we never even had a trial run before we left. We also opted for the porch, rug and the foot print to go with it and would highly recommend all three.

We endured some very heavy blustery down pours on several occasions and the tent I am very pleased to say held up exceptionally, not a single leak to be seen. I did tighten the porch straps over the tent and some guy ropes a little too tight which did result in the zip to the door being rather tight and awkward for a while. The only down side to this tent was the opening along the bottom of the end door to one of the bedrooms. It really needs some velcro or something before we go again to stop draughts and insects from getting in as I doubt we shall ever actually use it as a door.

All in all a great purchase and a delight to use.

By: Tletech  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 27/07/2009

Our first major tent for a long time which cost around £180 plus we bought the porch and the carpet.

The porch gives great extra space which had to be used for cooking because the weather was so bad all the time.

There were 4 of us - 2 adults and 2 children (6 & 10) plus our Golden Retriever and 2 of her 16 week old puppies. The tent suffered with condensation problems, I guess because of all the bodies inside and rain outside.

Although having the porch was good it didn't fit as snugly as we would have liked against the side of the tent. The rain came in big time but in fairness it was heavy rain and very windy for a long time :-(

Our biggest (and easiest to fix) gripe is the tent pegs. They didn't hold very well in wet ground so with the wet and windy weather I had to get up a couple of times in the night to secure flapping porch straps and flailing guy ropes - but I used some new heavier duty pegs which sorted out the problem.

It would be nice to have a guide to how to position the guy ropes because as I said early the wind and rain was constant and the ropes needed tightening/adjusting a fair bit but one night I over tightened and we couldn't close the main door nor the bedroom door - so back out into the rain and wind to re-adjust. Does anyone have any suggestions for positioning of guy ropes etc. Etc.

The space is wonderful, the separate bedrooms are really cosy and the centre carpet makes it very homely and comfortable.

All in all we love this tent, just need some good weather to enjoy it properly.

This tent is spacious and easy to erect. We bought the porch extension which was an excellent addition, which we used to keep shoes (so we never wore shoes in the main tent), the water container, and other items you need but don't want cluttering the main tent.

Unfortunately when we used this tent (for the first time) it rained every day and tended to drip inside in a few areas, although not enough to really wet anything through, we did use containers to catch the drips.

I must state this was the first time we had used the tent, so was not down to wear and tear, and I think was to be expected with the amount of rain we had.

Overall, an excellent tent, easy to use, and the only downside I now have is how to dry it out, it's massive !

Hi - just a quick note - just bought one of these and used it last night - the camping trip was a disaster due to the site we stayed on but this tent was fantastic - genuinely simple to erect, spacious and well designed - completely pleased and will now be buying the porch extension.

We are first time campers and did a fair amount of research before we bought this tent and I think we got a bargain! It goes up like a dream in about half an hour. That said though we could not get it back in the bag after! I agree that the doors are a bit draughty so Im going to try some extra velcro next time I think. Not a drop of rain got in and its full of useful storage etc. We paid around £125 and it was well worth it.

By: Blamru  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 07/06/2009

I was extremely pleased in the ease of putting up the tent and the taking down was also a breeze. Lots of space for two and two big dogs. My main gripe would be the draft (already mentioned previously) from the side doors, windows and end door. It was very windy in Snowdonia and the wind whipped up under the windows and doors. I am contemplating getting some velcro to stop this. We had no problem getting it back in the bag. I would strongly recommend getting the Gelert carpet, it really does make it more cosy. I made the decision of sleeping with our heads facing towards the inside of the tent but this end is much lower and was a little irritating in the wind but we will try it the other way round next time. We haven't been camping since 1990 so all things considered it was a pretty good buy!

By: Nevyn1975  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 31/05/2009

We've just used this tent for the first time and were very impressed. We needed a tent with 2 bedrooms so that our son could have some privacy as well as ourselves. The tent went up really easily and withstood the battering it got from wind and rain in the middle of our holiday. It also dried out really quickly afterwards.

I also like the way you can open the windows part way so that you get light into the tent but it is still waterproof.

By: Cupcakes  Reason: I've used one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 26/05/2009

We found this tent easy to erect, although we bought the canopy to go with it and that wasn't as easy as it looked to erect due to the tight fit/stretch over the poles, but it is very practical as an added protection/cooking area. Although a 6 berth tent we used it with only one bedroom and only had enough room for two of us. As previously commented one end is very drafty, so depending on the weather you may choose to sleep at the opposite end. Overall a very nice tent and value for money

By: Rarah  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:   Date: 21/05/2009

Love this tent! We camped at the beginning of May 2009 - withstood rain showers and wind without any problems. As others have said the bottom of the doors can be a bit drafty. We didn't even realise the tent had the option of a door at one end if you don't use one of the bedroom pods - this does tend to make the bedroom at that end a little colder but then it was a very cold night!

We had no problem repacking into the bag (and we're not experienced campers) - I wonder if they have made the bag a little larger for this year's model?

I do intend to buy the optional canopy or porch as rain will definitely get in through an open door without one.

And just in case anyone needs to know, it is possible to get a double and a single airbed in one pod, although there's no remaining floor space. Perfect size for a family of 4 but will fit 6 at a pinch!

By: Isa1  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 13/05/2009

We had our first outing with our horizon 6 at Easter. This tent is fab. As there is only the two of us we only needed to use one bedroom compartment so there was a huge amount of living and storage space which is great for us as we don't exactly travel light when we go camping.

Our first night was extremely wet and blustery but having also purchased the canopy we were able to sit out till late and not get wet or blown away. The tent really did stand up well in the strong winds and never once felt like it was going to blow away or buckle in any way unlike the outwell tent we had previously.

The only problem we had was getting the tent back in the bag at the end of the holiday. It took us over half an hour and numerous attempts to fold it right. I suppose this will get easier with practice. All in all A fantastic tent and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

By: TraceyJH  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 10/05/2009

Love this tent. Spent 3 days in the Lakes with it in very wet and windy (60mph gusts) conditions and it didn't let a drop of rain in. Poles flexed and tent buffeted, but never threatened to come down, unlike others on the site in different tents who vacated early. It was brilliant. First time we'd taken the tent out of the bag and only my 2nd time ever camping, but the tent was up and the kettle was on in just over an hour. Really easy to put up and take down. Good size and head height. Only two adults and a crazy spaniel as occupants, but absolutely loads of space. Could easily have had another couple of adults in there. Full size fitted ground sheet was great, but we also bought the Horizon 6 carpet and this certainly added a degree of 'luxury' and warmth so would recommend spending the extra £30 or so to get this.

We used our tent for the first time last year 2008, we were lucky with the weather as it was very hot, but the tent kept us cool inside. Easy to pitch and easy to put away. Will be using it again this year in August. Listening to all the reviews means we have no worries at all, fantastic tent excellent space and even a pretty colour

By: Mrneillees  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 27/08/2008

Have used this tent twice now and both times encountered torrential rain, but not a drop inside the tent! Great space, storage and light, however, as with previous reviewers, the doors tent to be drafty. We have solved this by using clip-on plastic eyelets which seal the door but don't damage the tent. Obviously this is not practical for the main entry door so there we use tent pegs to hook it down. Seemed to stand up to strong winds last weekend although one pole split when we were taking it down. And the canopy is a must buy £50 approx. Overall excellent value for £125 on Amazon!

By: Jclift  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 26/08/2008

We have used our new Horizon twice, relatively easy to put up, plenty of space in sleeping pods for one adult, 10 and 11 year old in one pod and adult and 12 year old in another.

Sewn in ground sheet but no facility to seal bottom of doors (3). Had an ant invasion so to seal fully would have been useful. Planning to use self adhesive velcro on next trip. Lots of plus points. Very tight fit getting back into bag.

We just got back from our first trip away with our new tent. We are really pleased with it. We had a lot of rain overnight, but it dried out very quickly once the sun came out, and I'd like to agree with everything the others have said about this tent.

By: Spannaz  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 20/08/2008

We purchased our Horizon 6 after camping on the top of a Yorkshire Dale. We had found our current Coleman Trailblazer was neither big enough nor wind proof enough, so set out after one day to get a new one.

We came back with this, and had it up in next to no time not bad considering we were new to all this. To say it lived up to its water rating is an understatement. Mother nature really did have a go at moving it, and some local tents were badly damaged, but this stood up no probs. The additional porch canopy is a real must to stop water ingress when the door is open, and at £40 its well worth it. The tent is spacious and ideal for the 4 of us, and really can't see any need to change for the future. These are bargain price now, and can really say they are strong, easy to erect and put down even in the wind (just peg it first lol) and great quality. Would buy another one without a hint of doubt.

By: Janbev  Reason: I've used one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 11/08/2008

This is our 3rd tent and is the best one we have had. We have just returned from camping and typical British weather - it rained, we had thunder and lightening and strong winds - it didn't leak, fall down and was really easy to put up, take down and store back in the bag. The 2 sleeping compartments were a good size and left a good living area in the middle of the tent.

An excellent buy!

By: Paddyscotsman  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 04/08/2008

Well this is our 1st tent and went on our first trip to Scotland, 8 nights in all, me, the wife and our 3 boys aged 3, 5 and 9. 1st 2 nights the tent did it`s job as we got battered by the heaviest rain in ayrshire that year and were rewarded with 6 great ones after. The tent gave us no problems putting up, 3 readybeds fitted snuggly in 1 compartment and in hindsight wish we had used the other instead of using it for storage cause the draught coming from the doors wasn't nice. Would recommend this tent for families and have already told my sister who is in the process of buying the same tent. The compartments, once closed up are great and plenty of room to move in the living area.

By: Lilycote  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 25/06/2008

This is our 3rd tent, we've used it three x now. It has a spacious living area with plenty of light. Considering the size, it is fairly quick n easy to put up. The ground sheet provided isn't full size, so we use two.

The sleeping ends would be cramped with three people but good and roomy for two. Lots of useful bits, two large tent tidies, lots of cable holes and lamp hangers. No leaks discovered yet! but we haven't used it in extreme weather. This a fairly versatile tent, with door and porch options, and lots of vents. We're impressed with it

We paid £120 for ours in a sale, great bargain!

By: Christina1  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:   Date: 19/05/2008

This is our first tent and we pitched it for our first holiday without a practice. The instructions were a bit vague for us novices but all in all it was pretty easy and not as unweildy as we thought it might be. It withstood 30 mph winds, didn't budge at all and didn't leak. The living area is very roomy yet cosy with plenty of room to walk about. The bedrooms, although supposed to be big enough for 3, would probably be a bit cramped. The bedroom fits a double airbed with room down either side comfortably, another single would leave no room at all. We only used one bedroom but if using both, the bedroom at the door end may be a bit chillier because we couldn't quite get it to seal up well enough to stop the draught.

There are three door/porch options which is handy, but we find the door openings a bit awkward and would prefer them in a 'D' rather than two zips. We also find it a bit draughty around the bottom of the doors (although this may just be us in our 'noviceness'! In hot weather though, this may be a plus.

Storage is good and there are two 'tidys' with eight pockets each. There is plenty of cable holes and things to hang the lights on along the top of the tent. There are two nice big windows in the living area, good vents and we had very little condensation (despite three dogs and both of us!)

All in all, we think this tent was a real bargain (£159), very useable, comfortable and fairly easy to pitch (even for novices).
