We bought a Kalahari 10 late 2010 when on offer in Go Outdoors, We also purchased the footprint and carpet, and bought the porch a few weeks ago when it came back on sale. We put the tent up in the garden as soon as weather got better to check all okay but only got the chance to use it last weekend (3 nights from 15th April).

We chose this as we are a family of 5 (2 adults + 3 kids) and wanted a large tent for longer trips. Initially it was not our first choice but after reading reviews here, seeing it a few times and speaking to friends who have the 8, decided it was actually better for us that our initial preferences and our budget. For the money it is excellent value, it is much bigger than it appears on first impression. It can easily hold 10 plus kit – but having 10 stuck in the communal central area on a wet day could be a squash, especially if no porch for cooking kit etc, in fact some manufacturers would easily class as a 12 man tent or even more. It took ~30 minutes to fully erect with 2. It’s very spacious, tardis like in fact, the bedrooms are extremely generous (each can easily swallow the occupants plus all their personal kit and more) and still leaves plenty of communal area inside. As the kids are still young and all 3 could share we could even just use bedrooms in one end and leave the rest as a huge open area. As it was we used 3 of the bedrooms and the 4th to store equipment and a ‘play room’. We used the generous porch to store cooking kit, shoes, spare chairs etc but these could easily fit inside the main tent without much compromise with only 5 inside.

The porch does not fit as snugly to the side of the tent as I’d have liked but provides a generous amount of additional space, but may mean some sites would say you need a larger pitch. Others commented they used the gelert porch when the Hi Gear one was unavailable, but the hi gear one has a closed front and you can unzip the entire front if you want

Any gripes? Not really, it can be a bit dark inside and making the central sections in a lighter colour would have helped (I think the earlier versions did have a lighter roofing) – an excellent tent for the money, plenty of space for a larger family, easily erected, looks solid construction, lots of nice little touches (many pockets, cable entrances, removable dividers, vents, hanging points, SIG, .) a reasonable footprint, and great value for money. Ventilation is adequate but still its a 'nylon' tent so hot in warm weather. Packs back easily into the bags. Only thing is a shock chord broke when striking the tent, nothing major but would not expect it to have gone on its second outing – not a problem to insert a new one but not looking forward to doing it on such a long pole! Can’t comment on its stability in bad weather as luckily we did not experience any, however our friends who have the 8 said theirs behaved impeccably during a storm they had last summer with lots or rain and high winds, so hoping all will be okay. Would I recommend it – obviously yes! We could have easily got away with an 8 but for the small price differential and 5 of us then went for this for the extra room it gives and very glad we did.

We bought the Kalahari 10 after seeing it in Go outdoors and decided we had to have it. We only went to get a new airbed :) We have 3 children and also a dog and this tent is spacious and doesn't make you feel crammed at all. When we bought the tent we also got the porch, footprint and carpet in the deal. We have only used it a few times but it has never let us down, wind and rain the last time we had it out and we still managed to have fun. All in all I wouldn't be without it

Bought this tent last year from Go outdoors as needed a larger tent as our older kids still love camping. For the size of the tent it is so easy to put up. Fantastic space in the inside even with 6 adults and 2 kids.Wish I had bought this tent years ago as we absolutely love it. Can't wait to get away camping with it this year.

FANTASTIC - what a great tent. Even us relatively novice tent putter uppers took only 20 mins to get the frame up and another 15 mins to tighten all the ropes and make it secure. Kept us warm and dry in the typical British summer weather! Loads of space for our family, bits n bobs and handy storage pockets on the room dividers.

If you have a chance to get one at a good price then buy one - highly recommended.

Bought this year in Go Outdoors for the bargain price of £189 so we also got the carpet (luxury and stopped tent floor getting too hot to walk on) footprint (good idea as no wet on bottom of tent and folded back easily in to bag!)and porch, which once it was up worked fine. We had a slight problem with it flapping about a bit but I think due to the slight slope we were on.

Found it easy to put up after one practice and using a bit of common sense and the instructions it went up quickly with two of us. I don't think I could do it on my own. There are loads of guy ropes and they are very bright which is handy. The 10 nights we spent in it in Norfolk were very hot and dry apart from the early hours of our first morning and then when we got up about 7am. It really rained and was windy and it was so loud on the tent but that's normal. The porch did fall down but only because I adjusted the guys at the other side (can't leave them alone me!)I put the storm pegs in and the porch went up perfectly. We are so pleased with this huge very secure tent. We had 2 adults and 3 kids in one bedroom, one adult and a massive changing/storage area in the other! The central area was a great play area. It went down very easily and back in the bag first time.

Would recommend.

Another one who bought this for £200 in the Go Outdoors sale! Only been away for one night in it due to cat at home needing daily medication, but very impressed. Took a while to put up, but thats simply because I haven't put a tent up in about 17 years, so took a while to get back into it! Tons of room, love all the pockets inside. Also bought footprint, carpet and porch. Would definitely recommend, and can't wait to go away again, hopefully for a bit longer next time!

Well what can I say we brought this tent just in time in the go outdoors sale (had a job getting everything we wanted but got there in the end) we brought the tent, the porch and the carpet, we did order the ground sheet but this was sold out twice when we tried so we have given up on that one.

We recently tried out our new tent not for from home (just in case) it took us about 1hr to put up the whole tent including the inners but I think this time would be reduced now as we know how it goes. We love the size as its huge, in fact we joke that our tent is bigger than our house!. Its a tall tent as well as I am 5'9 there was plenty of head height there are 4 large bedrooms , there are six of us 2 adults and 4 kids and we used one end solely for the kids and had two other bedrooms on the other side one for us and the wardrobe (there was plenty of room) and the other our toilet. The living area space was so large we had our picnic table and chairs and a high chair in and still the kids had room to play.

We brought the porch and are so glad we did as we used this part for our kitchen and food (and to take muddy shoes off before entering the tent) we love the fact that we could zip it up so no rain can get in( we had torrential rain for the second night and no leeks) as we had this problem with out last tent and porch. There are loads of pockets inside the tent which come in very useful. We also recommend the carpet, never had one before but boy does it make a difference especially on a cold September weekend! we are so proud of our tent now and are planning some longer trips further away which we not have considered in our last tent.

We bought this tent in June 2010, huge tent with loads of space, it has four bedrooms and we only need two so we use the other as a changing room, and storage. Etc. We had a bit of a struggle on the first attempt at putting up, as we were novice at camping but we now have it down to 40 minutes with just 2 adults putting it up. Great value for money though we paid £360.00 it was up for sale at £200.00 4 weeks later. We also bought the footprint and indoor carpet, which we have found makes the inside a little warmer underfoot. We have had lots of people ask us about this tent when we are camping have recommend buying it. Fits in two bags which aren't that heavy although not yet go the knack of getting the tent into the bag as easy. Tried to buy the porch this year but it seems to be sold out everywhere. Just got back from camping this weekend and it rained on the Friday night, we had no leaks and wasnt bothered by the wind.

We bought this tent in May 2010, huge tent with loads of space, it has four bedrooms and we only need three but the other one is excellent for storage of bags/boxes etc. Very easy to put up, on our first ever attempt it took 30 minutes. Great value for money if you buy when in a sale. Selling for around £200 now, though we paid £360. We have had lots of people ask us about this tent when we are camping and always recommend buying it. Fits in two bags which aren't that heavy and we are going to buy the porch to go with it next. No problems with wind and rain either. All in all, very pleased with it.

We bought this tent as we have 4 children and plan on more so thought it would be handy having the extra space. We have only used it once but loved being in there that much that our 3 day planned trip turned into 9 days. We had all sorts of weather to hot days to gale force wind which our tent withstood very well. We bought the footprint which is a must in bad weather and we also have the carpet and the porch. We were a bit disappointed with porch in bad weather as it stores water on the top and the wind blows through it really bad, so could do with an extra strap to help hold it down. My husband had to tighten it on several occasions. Apart from that it came in handy for cooking in when the weather was bad, and also used our porta toilet in there of a night for our children.

Manufacturer's Description

An updated version of Hi Gear's extra large tunnel tent, perfect for relaxed family camping holidays.

The Hi Gear Kalahari 10 Elite is a spacious and stable tunnel-style tent with two large partitionable bedrooms in a face-to-face layout, roomy enough for you, your family and all your gear.

Pre-attached high-visibility guylines, reduced pole sleeves, and sewn-in polyethylene groundsheet make pitching the tent quick and easy.

The bedrooms comfortably sleep five at each end of the tent, and have breathable polyester walls. Bedrooms can also be removed, to give you extra storage space, or room for dirty gear.

The huge living space has two large windows and hanging storage pockets to help keep it tidy, organised and liveable. Multiple vents along the roof help air flow throughout the tent.

The sewn-in groundsheet combined with the fire-retardant polyester flysheet (with 4000mm hydrostatic head) give you a fully sealed and ventilated internal environment, so you'll be completely protected from draughts and sustained downpours. The two doors can be propped and extended out to use for extra shelter from rain or stretching the space out for more room if it's sunny.

Other useful features include the water-repellent zips and an electrical cable access point.
