3 Reviews of the Tundra II RT

Bought this tent from Cotswold Outdoor as I wanted a tent that would give me plenty of room for one person. I've used it in all weathers (once it was -2°C when I woke up)and during a 2 day storm on the Isle of Skye during Easter 2009. It was noisy as you can imagine, but the tent itself held up no problem while others were falling apart around me.

I did make up an extended skirt on one side to stop the rain being forced under by the wind, but most tents would have the same problem.

The saggy top problem in the other review can be alleviated by angling the tent securing straps slightly, and also the guys. I haven't found it to be excessive even with snow on. I made up a footprint groundsheet for it, which also gives me ground cover in the porch area, and maybe because of this I haven't noticed any leakage from the built in groundsheet. Ventilation is good and adjustable and there are midge/fly nets on all the vents and doors including into the inner tent. I don't understand the problem with the inner tent clips, as I just leave mine fitted and put the tent up and take it down as one. The Aluminium poles (3 off) are easy enough to fit, but don't peg out the tent before you insert them as it can be difficult to do like that, peg one end only if it's windy.

Not loads of headroom inside, but I sit on a thermarest seat and my head doesn't touch the roof. There is quite a lot of room otherwise, the photos are deceptive.

I like it, it's proved to be capable and durable and I use it all year round for a week or two at a time. One thing which does make the experience a bit better as I camp 'out of the car' is that I have a couple of waterproofed backed fleece picnic blankets which I tend to put in the sleeping compartment and in the porch to make life just a little cosier.

I did the review below, but as you can see I am amending the score. All the camping I had done was on dry ground. But while camping in New Zealand, I found that the ground sheet leaked. When the ground was damp, there was a wet patch under the Thermarest mats. We first thought it was condensation, but a polythene sheet under half of the groundsheet proved it was leaking, and when I tried mopping the bottom of the groundsheet with a damp cloth, you could see the damp coming through. I took it back, Jack Wolfskin replaced the inner tent - and exactly the same thing happened again, with dampness coming through the groundsheet and I now have a credit note with the shop for the price of the tent. If it happened to 2 tents I used presumably it has happened to others.

I'm pretty pleased with this tent - a useful size, doesn't take up much room in the car, with a porch.Big enough to cook, sit and store things. Easy to pitch on my own. I wanted a tent that can be pitched outer first, like this one - very useful when pitching or packing in the rain. I bought it to replace an elderly Vango tunnel tent. 3 features of that tent that I miss are

1. This one only has a single door to the porch, the other had one each side - useful if the wind changes direction, to see a different view, or for if you can't park your car that side.

2. I found it sagged a bit lengthways, in spite of frequently tightening the straps round the edge/bottom of the flysheet, and have added additional guy ropes which can be attached to the vent at either end of the flysheet - surprised this isn't included as standard

3. The little plastic clips which fasten the inner tent to the flysheet are excessively difficult to unclip - I had to use a metal blade to open them - even more difficult when your hands are cold.

Manufacturer's Description

The classic tunnel shape, originally designed for demanding trekking trips in the northern latitudes, gets a full REAL TUNNEL technical upgrade. Side wind stability - traditionally a weak point in classic tunnel tent design - is significantly improved, the usable interior space is maximised, the required pitching area minimised and the pitching procedure simplified. The 2-person version has an elongated vestibule and offers plenty of room, even when tentbound for long periods.
