Got the 2012 version on offer from Yeomans last year. Did 2 nights in this 2 weeks ago. Cold, windy but no rain. Tent stood up well. Its a lovely tent. Just WISH the curtains were zipped, but hey? Would recommend a front extension though, makes all the difference! So. We will see how we go throughout year once we have had a thunderstorm then might be back.

Really like the Oakland XL which we purchased at the end of 2012 with the side canopy. But I do have a gripe - the curtains are a pain to roll down and the doors a pain to roll up. You need 2 people to roll the doors up if you want them to look at all tidy and I find that the curtains always look a mess with the weight in the middle pulling it down. Does anyone have any tips for rolling curtains and doors up and down? If so I would love to hear from you

The perfect happy return to camping for a couple of senior Citizens. Bit of a wriggle to put up but warm comfy and cosy. Perfect to sit and watch the world go by. Don't try and be a perfectionist. The symmetry is not perfect and my hubby drove himself mad trying to line the tent perfectly in the middle of the main frame. Main frame makes it the most sturdy tent we have ever seen.

My wife and I used this tent for a four week trip to France this year. With the side extension for cooking equipment we had plenty of room. I think it would be cramped with 5 adults because of the sloping sides. We used those areas for storage. Small children could make use of the sides though. It takes a while to get the hang of putting it up with the steels poles sometimes coming apart just as it goes up. The main thing this is a robust tent, when we followed on with a wet and windy weekend in Pembrokeshire the tent stood up very well to the weather, where as my daughters tunnel tent suffered some damage. We had the carpet and ground sheet as well. The carpet tents to slide around and rucks up but really makes the tent like home. The side extension did not stand up to the bad weather in Pembrokeshire and got slightly torn.

Bought the Oakland Xl in 2010. We couldn't decide whether to get this one or really spend and get the wolf lake 5. We ended up getting this including the side extension, foot print and carpet. We used it for a couple of years and then gave in to the original desire for a poly cotton one and sold it for a wolf lake.
Pros
- spacious living room
- relatively light and small when packed (considering the size of the tent)
- good headroom compared to tents with flexi poles
Cons
- too bright inside - especially in the bedrooms (when compared with some on the market like the Kampa ones with 'sleep tight' system.
- all doors are on a slope with no cover - means that rain comes in when going in and out when it's raining (the latest versions have now included a shelter over the side door)
- only Velcro along bottoms of doors (rather than a zip)

Just got back from first trip with the Oakland xl. Having already had a similar designed Outwell (Carolina m) we found it easy to pitch as same principles. It stood up well to the wind and rain (thankfully limited as we had a great week). Space is great, we used the 2nd room for clothing storage which freed up main living space. Seemed a lot more taught than the Carolina, maybe due to the storm Velcro straps that attach the fly sheet to metal poles (which our other tent doesn't have). As with the Carolina, the only downside is the velcro securing the outer doors, as wind (and daddy longlegs - of which there were lots - they seemed to be attracted to the green!) can get in between plastic window and mesh door, so I might invest in some more Velcro to secure it better. Also wish Outwell would start putting a second ehu flap on other side of tent. Overall very pleased with it, especially getting it for £225 from a price match at go outdoors.

Our Oakland XL has given us excellent service and we found it very spacious especially as there is only the two of us. The first time we put it up we thought it we were going to rip the material as it seemed to be very tight. We had not slackened the adjustable straps where the poles and pegs are located at the base of the tent. I think the best tip I can give to any person setting up this tent for the first time is to slacken off all the straps before locating the poles etc. We can thoroughly recommend this tent based on our experiences with it. The panoramic window setup is excellent and feels more like sitting in a conservatory than a tent, blinds can be drawn for more privacy if required.

I have previously reviewed this tent after using it one shortly after buying it. I thought Id now review after a couple of years use. Really like the tent. After 2 years of using it approx 3 to 4 times per year its still looks very good and stands well. The space both inside the living area and the bedrooms is very generous. Got the nack of putting it up quite quickly now. We have recently bought the side extension which adds shelter for cooking. I wish the storage bag for the tent had wheels to make it easier to move its very heavy. I am always very careful when putting the front fibreglass pole in as seen some reports of the pole snapping. I always ease into the plastic on the steel pole then slide round to the front slowly. That aside a lovely well made spacious tent.

We bought this tent from Go Outdoors in summer 2010 together with the side extension. It has been used for several week long breaks since then and has always stayed dry inside even in heavy rain. It does blow about a bit in the wind but is mostly secure. The SIG keeps the bugs and water out and the mesh screens will give plenty of ventilation if we ever find ourselves camping in hot weather.
The windows in the front section give loads of light giving a really spacious feel and there is plenty of room in both sections. During rainy periods, many tents feel quite claustrophobic with the doors shut, but with big windows all the way around the front section the Oakland XL remains pleasant to sit in.
As other reviewers have commented, it can still be a fiddle getting the poles connected and the fabric often sits very slightly to one side when erected, but this does not affect the function of the tent.
The tent did collapse on us in gale force winds in June and two front poles broke and one of the metal connectors bent. (See “angled ferrule” in the message forum for how we got a replacement part.) In fairness this was probably because the pegs came out of the water logged ground rather than a weakness in the tent itself. Have now bought some delta pegs; as other reviewers have said, the pegs supplied are not sufficient for a British summer!
We considered buying a replacement tent rather than repair the poles etc. It was then that we realised how good the Oakland XL really is. There was really nothing available which gives the same height, space and light without going significantly upmarket or just being too big for two of us to erect.
Outwell have made modification to the 2011 and 2012 versions which should make this an even better tent. (Outwell- how about a second cable entry point on the other side of the tent?)

This is the third year using our Oakland XL and we love it! We invested in a side extension and front extension and these make all the difference although quite tricky to position on tent. Although it is a 5 man tent there are only 2 of us and so it’s extra roomy, spacious and light.
We have camped in all weather conditions now and have found it to be sturdy enough to withstand some very strong winds and have stayed perfectly dry in torrential downpours.
The first time we put up our tent one of the metal corners bent so much from the pressure put on it that it snapped and we had to find a camping shop nearby, luckily it was easy to replace, we bought two which were re-enforced and a lot stronger. Since our first hap-hazard attempt at erecting our tent we have become much more proficient and it takes us approximately 50minutes including extensions. The tent pegs supplied really aren’t up to the job on hard stony ground and so we have replaced them with some solid heavy duty ones.
Outwell clearly put a lot of thought into the design of this tent and since buying our tent, have adapted the design slightly such as curtain design, Velcro strips to secure guy ropes and poles and small canopy over side entrance to make it even better.

Manufacturer's Description
The latest Oakland XL is a five-person three room tunnel tent. Key is the superior interior light thanks to the large windows with toggle-up curtains to all three sides of the living area. The eye is instantly drawn to the smart new Foliage Green colour with contrasting roof and trademark Outwell stripes of the Outtex® 4000 outer tent. Pitching is particularly easy with the help of the Outwell Easy Pegging System and pre-attached luminous guylines. Steel poles and the gale-beating Outwell Wind Stabilizer System enhance stability in bad weather while the Rain-safe side door supplies a sheltered entrance. A Duratec fibreglass pole is used to create extra headroom via the weight-reducing Outwell Extended Frame System. Other features include: organiser pockets, adjustable pegging points, reinforced stress points and heavy duty Outwell zips.
Recommendation: Generous family living for up to five in a compact tent that has an unmistakable Outwell heritage.
