We have camped in tents since before we had children, we now have 2 young boys and packing up the car for a long weekend seems to take loner and longer each time...we have decided to upgrade to a campervan. Nothing too big - similar size to VW T5 or slightly bigger.

Our budget is max £20k for that we want petrol, manual transmission vehicle with 4 seatbelts and sleeps 4 - planning on getting a driveway awning for longer trips. We are planning on European trips as well as UK.

We have been browsing for a month or so and the Japanese imports keep cropping up - they look like good value for money. Nissan Elgrand or Toyota etc.. what's your opinion on these over the VW T5 or similar UK van conversions?

I have a Toyota Alphard conversion and am very pleased with it. It's a 2.4 petrol 4WD but it has an automatic transmission.

We too were looking at the VW T5's but were put off by the price and then we noticed the Alphard. The vehicle is a 2004 but the Japanese vehicles don't suffer from any rust and it is in very, very good condition. The conversion is new and takes place once the vehicle is imported. You can specify what you want (within reason) and pick your own colours and upholstery etc.

So, what you end up with is a very good condition base vehicle with brand new conversion (fridge, cooker, bed etc.). At around £20-22K it's very good value.

Having an import makes some things a bit more fiddly but I think it's worth it - had it about 15 months now.

Never had to get a spare part yet but they are available I'm told! There's a couple of good Facebook groups that have a lot of knowledgeable people.

I get my local garage to do the servicing, no problems although he's only had to do an oil change as yet. I've got a service schedule off t'internet and just follow that.

That will depend on the vehicle, but not usually a problem. However, insurance can be a pain, as some brokers will not touch them. I have an import, and insurance on that is noticeably higher than on my other, larger vehicle. So bear that in mind.

I'm not recommending you get a Bongo, just sharing a positive import story. Imported ours 10 years ago, it cost £6000. We could not afford a VW of similar age/specification, and I'm glad we couldn't!
We've had 10 years of hassle free motoring and traveled thousands of miles in France and the UK, never missed a beat.
Never had any issues with insurance or parts, the local garage has looked after it for several years with no problems.

I imported a van from Germany in 2015 and have had no issues with insurance at all. The whole process of registering it here was very simple and the DVLA were very helpful.

Grey imports from outside EU Ie Japanese van might be more of an insurance problem. Imports from another EU country despite being lhd will comply with Euro regs so ok to insure.

Mine is Japanese and, yes, it has been an issue for me. You learn to start every conversation by saying "Do you cover Japanese imports?" so as to avoid wasted time.

When we had our Bongo, we had no problems whatsoever getting insurance. We had a choice of companies willing to insure it, and the prices were reasonable. Were we just lucky?

We heard of people having many more problems insuring LHD vehicles in this country, and having had a LHD Smart car, we found the same. As soon as we said it was LHD, many insurers didn't want to know.

Colin

Bongo is far too small for 4 and quickly becomes very tiring when living in.. they are also very thirsty for their size returning low 20s mpg in town, can I ask why you are looking for a petrol as most Import vans are automatics and many are 4x4 making them very uneconomical to drive...?

In terms of petrol we plan on having it for several years and the talk of potentially banning diesel from cities had put us off?

I certainly don't see this happening any time soon as there is no real alternative for larger vehicles at present. Have a look on the new van sales pages, they are all still diesel.

We have an alphard, albeit not converted. Vehicle quality is superb. The forums give invaluable advice including on insurance. Have a think whether you really need a conversion. Some people leave them unconverted and manage very nicely with a drive away awning. If we needed to replace our alph we would get ......... Another one!

WE also have an Alphard, and agree with Downthehatch about vehicle quality. We've gone for the conversion, and wouldn't change, but I can also see and unconverted one working, particularly with a larger drive-away awning. The conversion however means that we can extend the months we can use the van.

Well, I would say "yes", but then we are each talking about a sample of one vehicle, so it's hard to extrapolate to the broader market.

Every year I go out there and get quotes. Yes, I do find insurers who cover imports. No, it is not as easy, partly because all the major insurance comparison web sites seem to assume that the vehicle is a UK model, so our import is simply not on the list that such websites use. So I google around, then fill in forms for individual insurance companies or ring to get quotes.

Also, we run three vehicles in this household, and the import is the smallest, the least valuable and, far from being exotic, it is almost identical to the sister model sold in the UK. Yet it is also the most expensive to insure.

I suggest to the OP that they find a vehicle that looks interesting, like an Alphard, then try getting quotes for that specific vehicle. There may be no issue at all.

On the other hand, what the OP does not want to happen is buy an import and only then find that the insurance will cost twice what they expect. Forewarned is forearmed, and all that.

EDIT That aside, I really like Alphards and nearly bought one new myself when I lived in Asia.
