I plan to rent a campervan, family size, and stay in the Lakes 31 Dec to 2 Jan 2018. Windermere area, ideally. I've never rented a van before. Is there a recommended place to park it? Are there any sites open then so that we can plug into the electrics etc?

Welcome to UKCS.
All I can say is good luck. Really. It strikes me you're very late to be looking at hiring a campervan. And the sites that are best for New Year were booked up long ago - the Lake District especially.
Let us know how you get on. I'm sure you'll all enjoy your adventure.

Just a word of warning-the approach road to this site, up the side of the lake, is very narrow and twisty most of the way so I wouldn’t recommend it for an inexperienced camper van driver with anything much bigger than a car/small van sized vehicle.
