Evening all. Looking to plan a European trip or two this year and thought that following the Tour de France for a couple of stages seems like a good idea.

If anyone has any advice or tips I'd be only too pleased to hear them.

Happy New Year to all fellow MH's.

If you want to see stages in mountains or touristic areas crowds can be considerable & campsites full. If you want get up a mountain & park beside the road you might have to get up there early the day before.

Itís much easier to watch a flat stage in a more remote provincial area. Park easily beside the road an hour before. The publicity comes past chucking freebies. The breakaway whizzes past then the peloton has gone in seconds. Grab some sgns for souvenirs & thats it. You can also take in the start & finish towns without too much trouble.

In more recent years, we did see more restrictions on road side parking. You need to be early as roads got closed much earlier recently too. This MAY have been just local to the places we visited.
For us parking on-stage and specatating alongside our campervan is favoured. So getting set early is not an issue. We either drive along the stage (just follow the stacks of barriers, bunting etc) and park up as soon as you spot a good location (there will be lots of choice). Or: go into a smaller village and park up for a short stroll to the stage.
If you have not experienced it before, it's a must do ! Plan ahead and enjoy it. Don't try to watch more than one stage section in a day unless you have checked that enough time is available to easily do it. Even with our extensive experience of doing just this on Rallying events in the 80s, we got caught out and missed a second viewing due to road closure. Worse near bigger towns.
