My little dog Sophie goes to the vet's tomorrow for an op, and to be quite honest I'm dreading it.

She has a lump on her right foreleg which started off as a spot then began to look like a blood blister. Thinking it would burst of its own accord I thought it best to leave it alone but it's now gone a bit more solid and is growing by the day, though it's not painful or causing her any discomfort. The vet said this morning that without removing it and having it tested he can't say if it's cancerous, though hopefully it will turn out to be something caused by an impacted foreign body and therefore harmless.

Some of you may remember that 2-3 years ago I had my cat Tiger treated for a cancerous lump in her leg, and though the treatment worked after a fashion she passed away just over a year later. That's why I'm dreading taking Sophie tomorrow, I really don't want to hear any bad news. So if all you dog lovers on here can send us some pma through cyberspace please it may help.

P.S  On a lighter note I discovered this morning how to make Sophie 'sing' - just put her in the van without Sugar. That's the first time since I got Sophie just over three years ago that they've been apart and she whinged and cried all the way to the vet's!

We hope all goes well Tigermouse for Sophie and yourself.

We have had lumps removed from both of the Great Danes we have owned,Henry, who had a good life after his surgery and was with us a futher 5yrs,and Brad, who is still having a good life with us.We were fortunate in when they tested the lumps the dogs had removed, they were benine cysts. It still had us worried though

Big hugs to both of you,and stay positve.

Got my fingers crossed for both of you.

In a fashion, I know how you must be feeling. Our fuzzy little four-legged friend had invasive surgery a couple of months ago, and even though it was a routine op, I was on tenterhooks the whole day until the time came to collect her.

Aside from a faint scar, you wouldn't know she'd had anything done, and moments ago was fast asleep next to me on the sofa, twitching like mad and kicking seven bells out of me

Fingers crossed everything goes well. And give Sophie a big hug from me.
My rescue poodle had surgery to remove mammary lumps, so I now how that waiting can be, she got the all clear. But sometimes I think the fear of them going under for an op is scarier than the treatment, I'm sure Sophie will be just fine and be back home soon.

Will be thinking of her xxxx

We've just found out our dog needs a lump removing too, the vets first thought it was just a milk duct infected but the lumps got bigger now so needs removing. We've come away from the vets not really knowing what the procedure is or what happens after. We'd decided that they'd x-ray first as it normally spreads to the chest and if that's clear to operate other wise it's not worth it, tho they have told us they cant obviously see everything. We've also been given the option of sending the mass off for testing but other than being told that's another 80 we dont know the benefits of doing this. Does anyone know if they offer further treatment if the results are bad? I dont wanna think the worst but it's there at the back of my mind :*(

Your thoughts and feelings are exactly the same as mine Ishipley.Tbh if you can afford the extra cost to get the mass tested then have it done, at least then you'll know what you're dealing with and can act accordingly.

That's exactly what I did with my cat Tiger, the first mass was a mammary tumour which I had tested and it turned out to be cancerous. I was then given all the help and advice I needed to deal with the consequences and decide what to do and a follow up course of drugs when I said I wanted her to be given a good chance; my vet didn't try to influence me in any way. The second tumour appeared on her leg nine months later and was removed straight away, though I didn't have that tested as it was obvious what it was. Again she did well on the follow-up medication and lived for another five months before passing away peacefully by my side on the bed. I know having the first tumour tested added to the bill but at least I knew what I was dealing with and could make an informed decision.

Regarding Sophie's lump, the vet said this morning that I could have a needle biopsy done but it probably wouldn't give any results anyway so it's best to have the whole thing removed first and tested afterwards - he's already factored the cost of that into the final estimate so at least I know it won't be an extra charge, and I'd rather have it done and know what I'm dealing with. I just hope it's good news rather than bad.
