I recently posted something for sale on Gumtree, collection only from home, these are the responses I had:

Person No.1: Very late Weds night, "do you still have it?" I replied the next morning yes, was then asked where is it, I replied with the village name where I live, heard nothing else.

Person No.2: Fri pm "Do you still have it?" I replied within the hour Yes and the name of the village where I live, again heard nothing else.

Person No.3: Sat an "Do you still have it?" I replied within the hour yes and the name of the village. They replied "Great, I will pick it up sunday. I replied asking what time, I then received a reply I will phone first, if not sunday, then it will be monday, guess what, I've heard nothing.

Person No.2 e-mailed me sunday afternoon saying he would like to collect it an hour later (I didn't see the e-mail until late at night due to being busy in the gardenand doing other things).

I find it really annoying thet people seem too willing to waste your time and others, ask questions, do nothing for 2 days then decide out of the blue that they want something when you are now waiting for a buyer who turns out to be a time waster and thought they weren't interested because they didn't reply for 2 days.

I had to give up on Freecycle because I got so fed up of rude people.
People who wrote in text speak and so I couldn't even understand the messages they sent.
People who couldn't say please and thank you.
People who didn't turn up when they said they would.

Urgh. It drove me mad, so I just had to stop for the sake of my blood pressure.

I feel for you, but sadly I don't have any suggestions for how to make it any better.

theres too many time wasters so I don't bother with ebay or any of the others I just take it to the recycle center, and tough if it could be used, what with people tring to rip you off paypal fees ebay fees trips to get wrapping paper/boxes, trips to post it. last thing I sold on ebay, the person didn't like it and drove 55miles to return it while his partner took a pic of me accecpting it back. as he wanted me to refund his postage but even ebay said he had to return it at his cost. now on I just offer to friends or dump it.

I've had a couple of timewasters on freecycle, but have also met lots of lovely people too.

One timewaster in all the years Ive used freecycle. Generally I find it great though. Ebay, on the other hand, is a nightmare in my experieince. Savage fees and almost total lack of support for sellers.

Also, be really careful about people wanting to go to your house directly. We had a horrible scam incident a couple of months ago where we ended up with the police round twice as the ebay scammers were in our garden yelling blue murder.

We sold a playstation (genuine reason for sale as we were moving abroad, working fine).. the people called late and said, oh we're just around the corner from you... can we just pay cash and pick it up? We stupidly said yes. They came, paid and accepted console. Next day (late) they called and said it doesn't work we're bringing it back for a refund. They got really nasty when I said they couldn't as it was 11pm. I was so suspicious I called the police and apparently its the oldest scam in the book - they bring back duff old console and menace you into giving them cash back.. they then have the cash and your working machine to take to cash converters.

Problem went on for about 2 weeks and we had to call 999 twice as we had screaming loonies in our garden. We stood firm though and didn't give them any money back. Never again and worth being aware of the scam as they do it with anything that can be traded in cash converters and where you can be menaced into taking a broken old one back.

Welcome to the world of the salesman, its not so easy, try selling double glazing or cars or caravans or anything. Among the time wasters/scammers/dreamers you will encounter you will find a few customers with money to buy your wares. But its hard work. If you don't want to work that hard, don't try to sell stuff.

If I ask a question on any site about something I always respond to the answers with a thank you, or a reason why it isn't suitable so the seller knows whether I'm interested or not.

It's only common courtesy which sadly seems to be lacking in many people nowadays.

Recently got a fab pop up cupboard off of Gumtree for 20 lovely couple not many miles from us, they held it for us till we could collect it.

Ask anyone who works or has worked in retail and its no different. rude idiotic timewaters galore. But there are also good customers ,its just how it is.

I had a lot of timewasters on gumtree recently and i ended up selling the items after posting it on facebook.A few of my friends shared it and thats how it sold.

Ebay i have no problems with apart from the sprinkling of idiots.

I recently sold a tarp and it was brand new never used.rrp is 60 and someone was offering 20 thinknig they are doing me a favour. I just said it will go for more so ill let the auction run. They went nuts calling me greedy and all the rest.
I pointed out im not greedy but if she thought it would go for 20 her bid should win it then.

It did make me laugh especially when the next thing was threatening to report me to ebay, for what im not sure.I just pointed out trying to buy it outside of the auction was breaking ebays rules so report me all you like.

And still the messages continued, it was good fun pulling her chain. Name calling and all the rest ensued, made my day knowing how much she wss going crazy but she still wouldnt stop messaging me then complained when i responded, as per ebays policy.

The item sold for 50 as predicted.

best bet is with electrical goods is just write down the serial number or take a picture of it on your phone and keep it for a few days, we had someone try the same scam over a flat screen, when they came back kicking up a fuss i went to the car looked at the serial and it didn't match with the picture on my phone, so just phoned the police in front of them and said someone was trying to get money by deception they soon scooted off (put the reg of the 2 different cars they used on all the local sites)

same thinh happened to me on ebay, this guy was going nuts saying i was rude not to take his offer.....went on for days funny thing is he was outbid in the dying seconds after doubling his original bid, Even though i mailed him the day before saying not to bother bidding as they would be cancelled by myself. I honestly thought if he'd of won he would open a dispute saying the item was no good get a refund.

My son advertised an old renault clio on gumtree for 100, sold as seen. Made it clear the car needed some work doing on it.

A local chap came and bought it, then proceeded to harass my son for a refund because the car needed the brakes and discs doing. Even threatened him with the Police!!!

What did he expect for 100!!!

No, really?!
