Mucker, my heart is breaking for you and your family. I've been away and just read your original post. I will be praying for you.....for some small bit of good in what sounds like a devastating situation. Sending a big hug, xx

“Finally!” they cry... an update!

...Yesterday, Mon 11th April, c.10am...

There I sat, in the midst of filing my latest update to you good folk... basically just blathering on about how the second 30 hour stint of hormones had been as ineffective as the first, and that at that precise moment, we were once again in limbo, awaiting a decision from the consultant as to the next step.
There was talk of yet another 24 hour rest for our daughter (and presumably therefore another night at home in her own bed!) There was also talk of a Caesarean, albeit in very hushed tones, and only in conjunction with the words “last” and “resort”. There were of course other avenues to consider, between these two extremes.
Annoyingly, before I had time to complete this update, and press “send”, a call came through (I’d popped into work for a few hours, until we knew what was likely to happen next). The call was to confirm that not only had the consultant made a decision, but that they had already, “within the last few minutes”, acted upon it...
Our daughter’s waters had been deliberately broken, and she had been hooked up to some sort of drippy druggy stuff, in the hope of sorting this crap out once and for all... so with that, my unfinished post got shut down, you lot were none the wiser, and I was hotfooting it home (can you hotfoot it by car?), to collect the missus and head straight for the hospital.

We arrived at the hospital at 11am. Daughter wasn't accepting visitors (as we expected... moody mare! Apparently she "was in labour"! Pffft!) so the day was spent pacing corridors, yomping around the hospital grounds, and generally overdosing on copious amounts of caffeine (Damn those Costa Coffee Franchises!). Whilst we didn't see our daughter through the daylight hours, we did of course get word from her partner, sometimes by text, sometimes in person. Word was that slowly but surely, the drippy feedy druggy stuff was being increased, but ultimately it was still resulting in “Same old, same old”! Nothing was speeding up. Nothing was nigh! Was this daughter of ours taking the p155?
By 6pm, as other relatives began arriving to spend the evening idly sitting by in the waiting room, (immediately adjacent to the room where nothing much was happening!) word was out that the drippy feedy druggy dosage levels were now set at maximum, (and that daughter was well into the second bag by now!) and with that, came a warning and an ultimatum... max. dosage = max. of 4 hours, and therefore the ultimatum was simple... bring us a baby by 10pm, otherwise the gowns go on, the trolleys come out, and off we all trundle to the walled city of Caesarea! Due to the all round delicate flimsiness of this much yearned for granddaughter of ours, not one person, including the medical staff, were keen to take that particular journey!

...Finally, at around 8pm, the first hints of progress were filtering through. At last, our daughter was experiencing pain (Yeah!), the gas & air was being bandied about like there was no tomorrow, and there was even talk of them there mythical contractions we'd heard others utter of!
Literally, as the 10pm deadline struck on the distant parish church spire (OK, I made that bit about the parish... and the church spire... up for dramatic effect, but the time is bang on!), things were going so well, and the result was so damn close, all C words were banned (apart from the one our daughter was apparently using to navvy-esque proportions next door! Thank God for thick walls!), and thus the toil continued... Just 10 short minutes later, orders were given to make those calls, and get those 3 girls to hospital urgently, to hopefully meet their new sister, with time to spare. (At this stage, I presumed it was due to the birth being imminent, but it later transpired that baby arrived... alive... at 22:07... SHE’D ONLY GONE AND BLOODY DONE IT!!!)

The first two sisters arrived about 25 minutes later, and were ushered straight through. Due to travelling a similar distance, but with the added complications of bed hoists, wheelchairs, and car ramps etc, the final sister arrived a good 5 to 10 minutes or so later, and was similarly ushered straight though, VIP-like. They’d done it! Mum, Dad, three existing sisters and one new one (by now approx.40mins old) ... all together in one room! Happy days!

...Another ten minutes or so, and the rest of us were finally invited in. For Me and Muckerette, that was 12 long hours since arriving at the hospital... but we all got a hold. We all got a cuddle. We all gave our kisses. If truth be told, I'm not sure exactly what others were hoping for, but I got my wish... and some! Maybe not eye contact, but there was more than an inkling of a bond between us!
We got the photo’s (about a thousand, at a conservative estimate!) and the foot & hand prints will follow.

For the record, no weight was recorded at birth, due to more important things for her to spend her limited and somewhat precious time on, but was later recorded as being a not too shabby (considering the circumstances) 5lb 1oz.

Of course, she was beautiful... even more beautiful than when I last described her as possibly the most beautiful sight I’d ever seen, all those weeks ago back in January, on the scanner screen!
Of course, it was emotional. But also weirdly calm. Eerily serene. Most definitely poignant.
I’d go as far as saying, for me personally, whilst it was of course a massive relief, my overwhelming emotion was pride.
Pride in our daughter, for being as strong as she has been, for as long as she has been, for those around her as much as herself.
Pride in her partner, for holding himself together despite the unimaginable fears he would have had, having gone through what he did with his first new born daughter, and the ongoing stresses and strains that go hand in hand with maintaining the love and care required for her.
Pride in our existing three granddaughters, for coping so well, so young, with such an emotional period of their lives, and particularly one such emotional evening.
And above all, the almost overwhelming pride in our new, beautiful, brave granddaughter, who despite all the odds, and all the unfortunate failings of both her mind and body, still found the strength, the attitude, and the downright courage, to fight her way through to being born alive, and taking a breath or ten of this wonderful air the rest of us often take for granted!

This morning, I post to you standing tall, standing proud, and standing happy... although I think hayfever season is upon us, if my eyes are any judge, so be warned!

This thread is dedicated to our dear departed brave little granddaughter... Sidney Ariadne... born and died Monday 11th April... aged c. 1hour 45 mins* (...And all this, on the birthday of her own daddy... and no... that bit wasn't made up for effect!!!)

Sleep well, Princess... and thank you for the far too brief, but oh so powerful memories, that we will cherish forever.
xxx

(*As we left hospital at 2 am today, no official time of death had been confirmed.   At approx. 1 hour old, her heart rate was recorded as being just a pathetic 1 beat per minute. The next check showed nothing. (Our daughter informed us that she had been advised that the likely record would show midnight, or maybe slightly before).
Due to her obviously weak heart rate, and her equally “relaxed” breathing, as well as her obvious penchant for sleep, nobody knows who was holding her when she passed... and I think we all prefer to keep it that way!)

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, you really don't know just how much better that makes me feel, this morning!

I'm off for yet another cuddle with Muckerette... we may be some time!
