They are now saying that it is possible that there weren't any drones over Gatwick despite the amount of reports from the public who say they saw it!

Apparently the culprits for the drone offences at Gatwick airport were a 47 year old man and a 52 year old woman who were arrested by Police at 22.00 hours on Friday night.

Maybe I was a little premature with my post saying the couple were 'culprits' which they were both eventually found to be proved innocent so my full apologies for that. However, it somehow sounded convincing that the Police had caught the right person or people as you would think that their evidence was far more credible than it was.

The police were acting on information received from the public, they would have no option other than follow it up and investigate it.

The police only need reasonable suspicion to arrest someone. The evidence evolves from the investigation. As I understand it the police did not divulge information regarding the couple but the press got hold of it from neighbours and friends of those arrested...who needs neighbours and friends, eh?

The possibility of there being no drone(s) in the first place is an additional cause for concern. Will airport authorities now be so afraid of their own shadows that shutting down airports could become a regular occurrence?

It may have caused serious problems to the innocent parties but on the bright side I expect the newspapers who pictured them on the front page and named them as "The people who ruined Christmas" will end up having to give them a very nice financial gift in the new year, quite rightly so!

It's been quite eye watering watching it all unfold. I am glad the general public are not involved in any way with what happens both on the ground or in the air.

I watched with mouth open as a person on one of the planes filmed one of the "Drones" in the sky in darkness. The person stated it's bright white light on the front turned to just red and green lights after stopping filming. It turns out it was a helicopter he had filmed.

I feel so sorry for those with plans disrupted.

Still not sure about banning or even heavy legislation of Drones.

Just like anybody out to make mischief or much worse, they will do it.

I have two drones one that will fly over 6 miles with FPV and the inbuilt software for stopping it flying in no fly zones can be altered. It is not registered to anything or anybody. If you are the kind of person who wants to commit offences you will find a way. We have gun, knife, speeding crimes yet they are all policed.

I would be happy to have my drones registered. I wonder if the kind of person who commit crimes would have theirs registered?

I think with the hysteria around drones the authorities have in this instance done a good job.

Now those that have created the hysteria....that poor couple that have been hung out to dry in the press etc.....may you be blessed with the grapes of wrath over the festive period.

It is already illegal to fly out of line of sight with a drone, and if you use FPV, there should be a spotter who is always able to keep the drone in sight.

Hi freeatlast

Yes the Dronecode is fairly simple in it's advice. It all changed in July.

It's so important to know advisories and law.

Your thoughts on FPV would put you at risk of leaving yourself at criminal action as you "must" fly within line of sight....no spotters are to be used.

https://dronesafe.uk/drone-code/

A car Mrs Jones buys can do over 180mph but that is not illegal...the illagal issues arise from not obeying local law. So she could be illegal driving at 34mph in a 30mph zone.

So to, one of my Drones has certain capabilities that could be illegal in the UK. Outside the UK is is legal.

As it stands the legalities could be challenged if I step outside of the Drone Code whilst in the UK.

Hi Sleeper

You are not quite correct. The legislation does allow you to fly FPV and have a competent spotter. However, the spotter must always be in visual contact with the drone.

Hi Freeatlast

It's not really about being correct or otherwise. It's about what being lawful and unlawful means. The Hysteria spread is often spread by not knowing the true requirements.

The Dronecode is from the CAA there is no other higher organisation when talking about flight, as far as I am aware. I think of them as God. The site you refer to is the word of God interpreted by man

The article you posted is out of date but does contain a slight update. The text is taken from the site you linked to

LAWFUL FIRST PERSON VIEW RC FLYING
Please note that operation of model aircraft out of the line of sight of either the pilot in charge, or the competent observer, where applicable, is unlawful, FPV pilots should also ensure that all equipment they use is legal for use in the UK, especially in relation to the operating frequency and power output.

The most recent changes were July 2018 but this site seems to be last updated in April 2018

Don't get me wrong I wish you were correct. The fact that I leave myself open to prosecution should I fly in any other way than the CAA allows. I would love to still be able to fly over 400ft high but it's no longer legal. The fact the drone needs to be always in line of site to the operator also somewhat dampens the fun.

In truth I do wonder about the use of Goggles for FPV. That must be a grey area? I don't know what would trigger a legal issue as the 400ft seems to be a legal requirement where as the flying with the drone in view at all times does not have the label "illegal" attached yet states that this is leaving you open to prosecution should you be found to be doing so.

They have actually updated their website here.
