Hi all, just after a bit of advice please from anyone who can help.

I do the occasional craft fair selling my crochet work, maybe 2 or 3 a year. An increasing amount of organisers are now insisting that as a stall holder you have public liability insurance. The ones I have done in the past have been covered by the venues insurance. I don't make much from it, but I have enjoyed doing the fairs so I am now considering getting some PLI. My best quote at the moment is £59 with the CMTIA.

Can anyone offer me any further advice please?

Might be worth checking these guys out...
https://craftinsurance.co.uk/

A small family run firm who are experts in this field, extremely helpful, and rather easy to get hold of on the phone... all according to Muckerette, that is, who has just signed up with them, to cover her for her sales on Etsy... and her very first craft fair at Bakewell at the end of this month.

She's paying something like £78pa.
That's for public AND product Liability combined, and includes worldwide sales (which in itself includes sales to USA & Canada, which apparently bumps up the premium a little... Presumably because of their perceived blame culture/penchant for lawsuits? LOL!)

I know nothing else on the matter, but if you have questions, I can see what Muckerette knows, or give them a call direct.

This is Muckerette's first insurance of this ilk, and it's all very new to her, but she was impressed with her dealings with them.

Good luck.

... and if that little trip of yours to Clover Fields is for the Late May Bank Holiday period, pop over to Bakewell on the Saturday (29th) and come and say hi!

Im not saying this is wrong, but i'd really check it out. We were paying something like £300PA for PLI, till we realised the cover was nothing like we needed, and wouldnt have paid out. Many go on turnover, and it wasnt a lot at the time. We are now on 10kPA to sell to North America, and the residents see claims as changing their socks. As they have to pay for everything, they are also insured for everything, and turn to lawyers at the drop of a hat.

I know, it's crazy isn't it? You'd think the venue's insurance would cover it. A friend and I enjoyed sharing a stall for a couple of years at a lovely local event, then they started insisting on public liability for stall-holders. That and the increased stall fee meant we wouldn't make enough to make it worthwhile, so we stopped going. It seems a shame.

This is why I haven't got it before. I only really do Christmas or autumn fairs because I make hats and scarves and some Christmas tableware not alot of call for tha year round. Ill give it a go thus year and see if it's worth my while. At least there will be more events i am able to attend.

Thanks for the warning, Mick.
I'll pass it on to Muckerette, as this is all her baby.
She is of course under the impression that it gives her the cover she requires, (I did ask!) but always best to double check!
I do know she went off the good reviews, and recommendations from other Etsy sellers, but as always, it's the small print that counts, and what happens if/when you put in a claim (which she hasn't done as yet, of course).

I know she spoke to the insurers over the phone, to discuss her specific needs (as opposed to a standard on-line form), but other than that I don't know the finer details.

Thanks again. I'll get her to treble-check!

Friends in the village have a smallholding and used to attend farmer's markets most months. They have given that up because of the amount of 'Red tape' and new regulations they would have to comply with. Not just PLI, but food hygiene regs etc..

You get the notion that these markets, craft fares etc.. will be forced to close because it simply isn't worth the cost and effort.

Why should food sellers at a farmers' market not have to comply with food
hygiene regs?

Does she put CE marks on whatever she sells as well? That’s another consideration in case little Johnny manages to eat something he shouldn’t.

Haha! The weather has been amazing, we couldn't wish for ny better! Our trip for fishad chips that day was unfruitful, there was a queue a mile long outside, tried pizza shop, closed and even though it wasn't yet 7pm the pub were taking no more food orders! Back to Buxton and takeaway by the tent!

Hope Mrs Mucker had a successfu day!
