Thank you, Bridgelayer.

Maybe the types that cannot be reversed without unhitching should be banned or at least restricted as to the roads they can use? After all, if you're using a piece of equipment that can impede other traffic because you can't reverse using it, you're using something that can cause an obstruction.

I know this won't be popular!!

Ficklejade, I think you said in a previous thread that there are signs prohibiting vehicles over x metres on some of the Mull roads. What was the length? And is it clear that the length includes the trailer, not just the towing vehicle?
PS I hadnít realised above the braking system on some trailers. Live & learn!

Fiona, it's 6m and I, as I think in common with the powers that be, thought towing a car behind a MH didn't register!!! How embarrassing! Though in fairness, when the idea was first discussed (around 2008?), towing behind MHs wasn't as much of an issue as nowadays.

Iíd forgotten the limit was that short! 6.0m would exclude some LWB PVCs / campervans. Pleased again that we kept below 6m in buying our MH, though for us it was for the lowest CalMac fare bracket. The fare for an 8.2m MH plus A frame with car must cost a packet, but if youíve got that set-up, money is no object.

It kicked off because far too many long vehicles, especially MHs, were venturing down some roads and there was nowhere to turn at the end. Then it developed (as MHs got larger and more popular) because these vehicles (and/or) their drivers were getting stuck on some of the through routes causing mayhem for residents and workers, not to mention the emergency services. That's when the "ban" came in. Needless to say, some are ignoring it.

Price is scary!

Ficklejade, you may not have seen a resurrected thread called Highland Towing, in the Caravan forum. It relates to the route to the smaller ferry to Mull & you might have relevant local up to date knowledge.
I didnít reply to the post that said cars would always reverse for a caravan because I couldnít think of a polite response!

Embarrassed to find the original post was rather old after typing three pages!!

Glad it helped prompt some good memories! I'm afraid I'm one of those people with a high visual memory which is handy in some ways - I don't have to stop to reset the sat nag if a re-route is required in most of Scotland and north of the M62 - but can make me pedantic in description!

Bizarre. Todayís senior moment! Itís in the Towcars forum, but I was sure it was in Caravans forum. Just enjoyed reading it again, a substitute for not getting back there for a while.
