I must admit I had to look me up on Wiki to read his history which is not very flattering. I cab vaguely recall a band called the Progues, but cannot recall any of their songs. RIP.

I starting reading "A drink with...." and thought what a wholly unpleasant bloke. I enjoyed RS&L for a few years then it started to sound like a pastiche - but he and the Pogues (and the Popes) etc did a lot I think to keep interest in folk music going during the 80s.

It's a worrying thing when you have to look yourself up!

Its a very fine line between whether you are seen as a folk hero or a waste of space. Although I wasnt particularly a fan, his prolific touring and promotion of "real roots music" puts him in the first box, I think.
It really struck me when Amy Winehouse died how it was ".......it was all so tragic and she was so unfortunate to cursed by her addictions", yet were her story different and she was a homeless drug addict begging on the streets most of the same people who worshipped her as a star would have dismissed her as a a burden on society and a waste of space.

I saw the Pogues in Coasters in Edinburgh in 85. Great evening.
Shame that most only remember him for FINY. He had so many other songs.
RIP.
Maybe. But unless you are/were a devotee, you only remember the 'hits'. Of which he only appeared to have the one we all know, and nothing else. Shame hes died though. For some reason, when i heard the news, Feargal Sharkey came into my head. A not dissimilar character of the time.

The Pogues did Irish Rover with the Dubliners. My friend was a great Dubliners fan, so I went to see them with her several times.

He was about as Irish as I am. But lets not go into that - the songs were ok. DOT and SM havent aged well imo, listening to the RS&tL album it all sounds a bit naff - I guess the production standards of the time didnt help.
The legacy is what matters in terms of keeping folk music alive - this is something we could do with in the West Country. Its not all the Wurzels, fun as they are.
