We gave up our C&CC club membership when they introduced 'fluid pricing' some years ago, very much against the members wishes, but purely commercial greed. Those who have mentioned the increasing cost of CS and CL sites, I believe the big clubs put pressure on these small operations to increase their prices so that they didnít offer such exceptionally good value against the cost of club sites.

Recently our camping has been restricted to short breaks at a small independent site 8 miles from home. By a river, quiet, relaxing and very well priced all season.

If I complain, Mrs. L just responds with, Where would you get a B&B for £30 a night?

Two drifters off to see the world.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Yes but in a B&B, you are not providing you OWN accommodation and breakfast! The true cost of camping is the investment/depreciation in your MH or Caravan, your traveling fuel costs (usually much worse than a solo car!), Club membership if applicable, insurance, maintenance and other running costs, providing/buying your own breakfast, and only then, the pitch cost on top of it all!

I'd be hard pressed to work out the true overall cost for my own outfit on a per night basis, let alone anyone else's, so many variables, but FOR SURE it's a LOT more than just the pitch fee! If it didn't all total up to be on a par or even more expensive than a B&B on a per night basis, I'd be very surprised! Those that make the greatest use of their units perhaps getting the best value, as most costs are fixed per year, rather than per trip!

I'm pretty cost conscious, and a £30 pitch fee doesn't sound good to me, but the overall caravanning experience and it's inherent costs is generally acceptable, for the freedom, the locations, the comforts of home in my own 'place', and the 'lifestyle' that is to be found on most campsites. Also, I've got a dog, so I can be assured the dog is welcome in the 'accommodation' with my van.

We are lucky in many ways with our choice of outfit. The caravan cost us next to nothing (£1,100) and we have had it 6 years, not spending that much on it either apart from about £200 on repairs a couple of years ago and a new set of tyres 3 years ago. We also bought a new water heater which didn't cost that much. Half the cost of having the old one repaired.

It is stored at home so it costs us nothing when it is not being used. Depreciation is nil. The caravan is probably worth the same as we bought it for, possibly a bit more. It was bought for cash so no finance costs. Insurance is minimal owing to the age of the caravan. As our car is far more than a match for the weight of our caravan, it uses hardly any more fuel towing it than it does on its own. I certainly haven't noticed any difference anyway.

As for site fees, £30 a night is far more than I'm prepared to pay!

Colin

£30 a night for a grass pitch with no facilities?? Daylight robbery! I'd want two nights on a site like that for that kind of money!
