I've got an ASX which is a slightly lighter Outlander with the same floorpan and running gear. The later Outlanders now use the ASX engine. Our last caravan weighed in the same as the Pathfinder fully laden (we had a Crusader before that), and frankly you didn't know the caravan was behind. Towing, I rarely need to drop below 6th gear.
Maybe worth a look for an ASX as well as an Outlander, though they are still scarce. Its a pretty good town car being that bit shorter than the Outlander. Mine does 45mpg round town, 50mpg on a long run and 33-37mpg towing.
I've towed with an '07 Outlander 2.0d for the last three years and think it's the best compromise of tow vehicle and everyday car. I get nearly 40mpg, have had it remapped to 180bhp so power is not an issue and the torque is superb. It also handles as well as most cars (same floor plan as a lancer Evo) but with the 4wd in lock mode will get you out of a boggy field with the van on the back. Having 7 seats is also a bonus.
I had the peugeot version of the outlander best car i have ever had i towed a van all the way to castallane in southern france with 6 adults a roof box and the van was full. It did it without a hitch. Great car couldnt recomend more strongly.
