I'm thinking of changing my car. The one that I am thinking of getting is 88BHP. I am only towing a gobur folding caravan at 750kg. The weight for towing is just about ok but I am trying to establish if 88bhp will tow it ok. Many thanks for any help.

I believe 40 BHP per 1000kg is the rule of thumb (the laden weight of your car plus the laden weight of caravan ). So you'll have to find out both ,if i'm wrong I'm sure someone will put me right

For towing, torque is more important than BHP. That's one of the main reasons diesels are more popular for towing than petrol cars. More low-down grunt. A car with a higher BHP but poor torque figures could be worse for towing than one with low BHP but higher torque.

Best thing to do is enter the details of the proposed new car and your caravan on one of the matching sites.

A car matching site will only provide figures in relation to the percentage of the combination and anything else is just a basic guide in terms of pulling power etc. therefore you are more likely to get the true facts from people on this forum if you just enter the proposed details as suggested by Colin21. A lot of money to pay out on a new vehicle and then be disappointed by it's towing performance and capabilities.

Well a Nissan Note 1.4. A Gobur Folding caravan at 7500. It's a light easy tow. Been towing it with a Kia 1.4

I was reading up on this a few days ago and torque is important ,if I remember correctly it was about 105 Nm for every 1000 kg ,it depends at what revs it is delivered at .Petrol cars with a turbo are nearer delivering the power at lower revs closer to diesels than non turbo one's (It's that this stage my head began hurt and stopped reading)

Think I should be ok then, as my caravan's max laden weight is just under 1,000kg and my car develops 320Nm.
