Had an almost new Bailey pageant on a seasonal pitch for last 4 years and I'm missing the fredom of a tent. We've pretty much decided to sell up and switch back to a tent but realise we've gone all soft.

Our season starts in March and ends October. Now our old tent is a Kyham Rigi-dome XXL and I'm worried, Really can't do with sitting in the wet (We camp in Devon & Cornwall) and then there's sitting in a tent with no windows on a damp day. I know it is frequently dry but we camp about 50 nights a year so we have to cope with all weathers.

Any suggestions?

I know what you mean about sitting in a tent with no windows. We have a 3 bed dome tent, but it's a bit grim in bad weather. We did some research and checked out the tunnel type tents with lots of space and windows. Even though we had bad weather, it still felt like a break and we were in the 'outdoors'...

What sort of freedom are you missing by being in a caravan? we are thinking the other way and thinking of going from a tent to a caravan, we are still weighing up the pros and cons and trying to figure out which is better suited to us..

Can't advise on which tent but we went from a caravan to a tent too.

We also had the Khyam you mention but agree with the lack of  light. Some of the new tents are really bright and airy and nothing like the older ones. With the right kit you can make a tent very comfy and homely.

We certainly don't miss the storage, towing and upkeep of our van, not to mention the money tied up in it. We also don't feel guilty if we don't camp for our main holiday which we did when we'd paid thousands for a van. You can get a really good tent for less than the cost of an awning.

We can travel so much further for a weekend with just the car and when we get home it just pops on a shelf in the garage intil the next time.

For us, we found sitting in a wet muddy field to be just as depressing in a caravan as in a tent.17

Ime also thinking of moving up to a caravan, we were in windermere this past week and it just rained (apart from 1 afternoon) non stop and the tent has only just been put away as its been drying over the banister rail, its taken 2 days to get over the hard work putting it up in mad winds and down in the rain. So next year ime thinking of leaving tent camping behind as we arent getting any younger.

I don't mean to sound rude or abrubt but why is it on a seasonal pitch?  We went from a tt to a 'van and can't imagine ever going back to having to set up a tent in the rain.  We went up to Scotland in it this year which was a 12 hour journey including stops.  We don't normally do all the journey in one day with the 'van because that is the great thing about a 'van you can stop overnight then carry on the next day.

If you liked old XL, how about something like the Khyam Chatsworth? windows on the 3 sides of the living area and a SIG. selling for under £300 now.

Really interesting comments guys.

Firstly I tented all my life from about three years old till I was 37. The an offer of a caravan was too tempting so we jumped on it. We took a seaonal pitch in Cornwall and got about 50 nights a year there.

In those really wet weeks we said to ourselves "we pity those in a tent" but month by month, year by year, the kit added up, first an awning, then a heater, music system, tv, dvd.......and now it's a real home from home. We only set up in Easter and decamp in October........easy. It's just like a holiday home.

Great

BUT

we always go the same place, see the same people, eat too much, drink too much, a cloud comes over and we go in the awning, light drizzle and the van door's shut and the TV's on. Really miss the nights sitting out with a great wine and talking about whatever comes in our heads. Miss the adventure of new places.

Now the cost.... £6k worth of van, £250 yearly insurance, £1k yearly site fees. And we've still got a trailer and all the camping gear sat here.

I could just tow the thing but although my car is very capable, it may seem a little unusual pulling a caravan plus I only get 20mpg without the van, with it I guess 10-12.

I now seem to be veering towards a Cabanon Biscaya but still a way off a final decision.

Surely the whole point of a caravan is to tour with it, being able to move from site to site without the hassle of having to pitch the tent each time, it is the time and effort of pitching and packing up and trying to fit it all in the car that is moving us ever closer to a caravan..

I see your point Nikki, but to level the van, put an awning up etc takes 45 minutes to an hour. And for me, I can't store it at home, and that means alot of time going to collect and drop back off. Hourses for courses. I one option suited all, we'd all be doing it.

I do think that I'm haunted by a comment said to me several years ago. I met this guy, about 75 years old in the showers on a capsite, got chatting as you do. He said, and I quote "I'm not old enough for a caravan yet"!!!!

His wife was the same age, but they were both under canvas............ the dog looked considerably youger..............

mmmmm certainly food for thought, as I said we are going to do a list of the pros and cons, I kinda like the idea of not sleeping on the ground, hoping it is slightly warmer in the caravan plus I kinda like the thought of a longer camping season, though need to work out the running costs of a caravan, guess there is one benefit of a tent, takes us only half an hour to put it all away put a load of washing on and sit down to a cup of coffee when we get home, a caravan I would need to keep clean, not an easy feat with the kids... oh dear decisions decisions

If you've got a reasonably efficient tent setting up system, it need not take much longer than sorting out a caravan. Don't forget that you have to add in extra travel time for towing the caravan plus setting up and putting away the beds everyday.

We started out with a caravan and I only changed over to a tent very reluctantly but now when I think about a caravan I think about the running/maintenance/storage cost, all that bed making, no separate bedroom pods, having to walk sideways because internal space is so limited.... The longer season would be nice, but not nice enough to make me want to change back to a caravan until I'm a lot older.

It all obviously depends on the type of camper you are.  We started off with a tt but within a few month's we had a caravan.  We loved the whole camping ideal but didn't really get on with setting it all up.  The awning doesn't have to go up immediately or at all.  So setting up a caravan really doesn't take very long.  With practice putting up the awning doesn't take much longer.

It is a bother having to make up the double bed every night but that is just part of it and doesn't take too long and it's nice to sit in the bed in the morning with my coffee and watch the world go by in my lovely cosy warm 'van.

The best bit about having a caravan is getting near your site in the pouring rain and knowing that within minute's you will be sat inside relaxing in a warm and dry 'van.

We are very lucky in being able to store our 'van at home and if we couldn't then i might feel differently.  I can put most of the stuff in the 'van at home and it's only the heavy stuff that needs to be put away once on site.

The Cabanon Biscaya is a lovely tent, i like the porch area as you could sit outside in the evening and not get wet.

We have a tv and dvd in the 'van but we prefer to sit outside and only put it on in the evening when we want the kids to settle down to sleep.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do
