for you?

Newbie campers thread further down about her first season, and all the first timers that replied to it (including myself,) made me wonder why is camping SO ADDICTIVE?????

For me, I think it's the break away from normality! Kids, hubby, friends, long walks, glorious sunrises and sunsets and no timetable to stick to....from the minute I arrive on site I start to relax....nothing compares in my opinion.

So what do others think??

I've been camping for for about 13 years (not solidly obviously!) and I still get that fantastic feeling when the tent's up, kettles on and I'm sat in my chair, of peace. Careful choice of site does help with that, but there is just something so wonderful about a tent - I love the smell of em

It's getting back to nature. Different degrees for all of us. Smell of the tent makes me feel young again. Wonderful!

Gentle rain on the tent at night, the sound of bacon frying as I wake up, The taste of my bacon when I have eventually figured out how to get the hell out of the sleeping bag. Sitting with that first coffee watching campers troop back and forth from the shower block. Total strangers saying "Good morning" as they pass the tent with a smile. knowing that we share something in common.....a love of camping.

Nothing can beat the smell of bacon drifting across a campsite first thing in the morning.

For me it's the simplicity - not necessarily of the set up etc, but of the way we live when on site.  More relaxed and more free, I guess...

The dawn chorus, listening to the sounds of the outdoors. The night type of light you get in the tent at 2 in the morning. Not caring if every hair is perfect. Snuggling in a double sleeping bag. The sound of the tent. Oh just everything about being in a tent including bacon sarnies with HP sauce!

as one of the newly hooked ones, i've loved watching my 2 year old run free exploring all sorts and watching my teens teaching their baby sister about things. also on this trip was realising my 15 yr old is an excellent map reader and getting us out of a lost moment!! its about getting to know my children better and working as a team rather than as mum and 3 kids. we all have our strengths and they are all needed to make our trips happy....even my 2 yr old daughter who's job it is to keep us smiling no matter what!

A kind of 'pioneer country' feeling and sense of adventure - definitely a break from normality. And the freedom. In a hotel you have rules and keys and mealtimes: with a tent you can do as you please (mindful of other folk of course).

I think you captured the spirit well in your post and welcome to the wonderful world of camping.

It's not camping it's the places it allows us to visit . Wether backpacking ,cycle ,kayak touring or a week in one place it's . In my 39years I've done very little else for holidays . Even spending 3 years cycling round the world and tenting it alot .
I love how so many people are getting in to camping but it sadness me it's taken a lack of money to take up camping or should it be seeing what the UK has to offer . Just remember if your camping to party not every one on site is and to be honest it was our party your crashing but your welcome just keep to the rules and every ones happy

I just feel so much more relaxed in a tent, no 'stuff' cluttering up everywhere, no mad dashes to kids clubs, no housework other than washing up and wiping down the table/stove. I sleep better too. And I LURRVE the smell of the tent/waterproofing best of all!

For me its the way my Kids can be Kids, watching my 17 year ols playing with his 3 siblings that are much younger than him, ( that would'nt happen at home) How friendly everyone is, the conversations you have with perfect strangers,  The simplicity of it all...............There is no other holiday for me like it
