Your hubby is totally deluded! We are a family of 3 plus one dog. We have a Montana 6 for long trips/comfort, a higear black rock 5 for short trips, an Iccy 300 for festivals and child free weekends and a cheapo Argos 4 man for emergencies :)

We did have 11 (oops) I admit that's too many. Recently sold 2, so a more respectable 9. Want to sell 3 more and that's where it ends.....hopefully

im happy with my setup now ( although i still dream of a de-waard and a karsten inflateble ) and id like the side extension for the outwell concorde xl to use on my concorde L

then im in tent heaven!

but 1 tent?!? - ur husband hasnt quite understood the whole concept yet! - show him this thread!

I pity people who only have one tent.

I have six - three in regular use, the other three in occasional use(ie every couple of years) and one that I haven't looked at yet (only had it 18 months - donated from a friend).

With the right tents, for me I think three would be enough:

- Longer trips & trips with whole family
- weekend trips for 2 or three of us
- solo backpacking trips

Of the above three, the only one I "need" to get a new tent for is the longer trips - I have two tents that do this duty that could be condensed down to one if I bought a new tent with the right features.

Yes, it's not just normal - it's sensible to have more than one (if you can afford it).

We were camping for about 3 months before we realised it would only really work if we had two tents so we bought a 4 man Quechua pop-up for weekends and especially for camping outside the main summer season.

The way I look at it, apart from the convenience, there's a lot greater risk of damaging the more expensive 'big tent' putting it up & down and camping in it in wind, rain & muddy circumstances in the spring / autumn months.

We got the Quechua for 90 and I think having it has helped keep the Outwell in nice condition for the (mostly) nice summer months.

ukmarc - you may just have provided my solution there!

It hadn't occurred to me that there is a risk of damage each time the big tent is put up and down - we could be on to a winner here. But it's also a very valid point.

One problem is that our whole outfit, including porch, footprint and carpet, was only about 300 and the weekend tents I'm looking at are pretty expensive in comparison. The Vango Icarus totally ticks all our boxes, but is coming in at around 180. I might try and look for one second hand....

Thank you again for all your comments folks - they are hugely appreciated!!! Glad to know it's not me who's insane.

three tents here...a Monty with extension for long stays, a Nevada for weekends and a three man Quechua pop up for overnighters...each one serves a purpose and comes in very useful...

I've got 2 pop-ups (one is son's); Outwell Phoenix (dome); Kairos 400 and a Caranex. Did have 2 more - both given away. And it's only me and son and now usually me when I can get away!! If it's 3 nights or more then either the Caranex (has free standing kit) or Kairos - tends to depend on how aereated the site is!! 1/2 nights - pop-up or Phoenix or Caranex. All dependent on site and/or my schedule, not to mention weather!!

Very hopeful of getting out this w/end - first time for months and know the site I'm going to is windy so think it'll be a pop-up - I can anchor the brute to the fence post to ensure it doesn't take off whilst get pegs in!! Much less comfy and not a lot of headroom but lot less drying and better wind resistance when fully guyed plus storm guys.

Persuade your OH on here - it's an education!

9 tents here...All in use at one time or another...I think flexibility is a word you should fire at your husband...If hes happy putting up a massive big tent for one or two nights each time(and all the assembled gear that goes with it) Let him get on with it...Me...I like to be able to pick and choose the tent that suits the situation..IE...Big massive tent for main hols or a weeks stay...Or small two man for a quick getaway...

Jelboy.

That's one every 4 months!

If you carry on at that rate, by the time you've been camping as long as I have you'll have 120 of the things....

May I say you've either chosen the right or wrong people here asking that particular question, as many campers (see above replies) have more than one tent - 11 !!??

We only have one tent - but my kids have their own for their own trips - they're not taking ours!!  I would actually like a week-end tent - but as OH quite rightly (did I say that...nooooo) says it does only take 15-20 minutes to put it up without side extension - so I do see his point - but...I would still like a smaller tent for quick getaway week-ends - it just seems logical.

If you like the Icarus but not the price have a look at the Gelert Corona 6, currently 150 at Tesco but last year they halved the price (was 120 last year) so may reduce the price soon or can be bought cheap on ebay. The reviews of the Corona here are honest but with sensible pitching the lack of front guylines shouldn't be a problem if you can get it for a good price.
