Just wondering what people's thoughts were on these roof protectors, useful of gimmick?

I'm tempted due to the claims it can either keep the tent cool on sunny days or retain warmth on cooler nights. Handy when you have a wriggly 18 month old

Cheers, kev

Never used one but love the idea more for tree sap and bird crap than temp control. Always think an extra layer of protection can't go wrong

My new Outwell got covered in bird crap last week on its maiden voyage. Roof protector (or a gun) would have been handy.

TT

So it could be a good buy at 69.99.to be fair I don't think it would matter if it was always silver side upto reflect light, it's still an added layer.

Oh well, another purchase to the new season list

Hi Kevin

I have bought one for our Nevada MP. I noted a few changes in the tent design from the 2013 model to the 2015 model. Thought I would contact Outwell to see if it was OK but they really are useless at talking to customers. I had a reply from them via Twitter and all they would state was that it "should" be OK!

Not sure about the temps regarding silver and black but I just thought about debris as already mentioned. A sort of sacrificial lamb!

Let you know how we get on with it in two weeks time.

We purchased one of these last year for our Montana 6P (2012) and they are worth having. Not the cheapest and just another thing to put up/take away, but it really does keep the tent darker in the mornings as well as cooler when the sun out.

And they are down to £56 at GO at the minute. I'm tempted

Just to add as promised.

I still like the idea of them. It is worth contacting Outwell if your model is not listed in their spec. I bought the Nevada MP version for a 2014 Nevada but as I have now found out it does not fit it well as they changed the design of the tent ever so slightly for the Nevada MP 2015.

Outwell via twitter says it "should"
Local camping shop said "yes"
Outwell via web (after two weeks wait) said it would not fit exactly.

Sure enough it does not fit, but I still like the idea and it did help keep the tent darker in the mornings.

I thought about them too. There wasn't an exact match for my model but I had hoped to stretch the ties to make it fit.
However circumstances changed all that.
I think the prices are too high for what it is.

I don't think my tent is a 6 p (just plain 6) will the GO protector fit ( for a 6)

This might be a good idea to preserve tent if going to use in France ?
And can you machine wash them?

Candy Floss

I asked the question about canopy and protector and they stated that the protector goes on before the canopy.

The cost can only really be justified when, for any reason, you were glad you bought one, not unlike insurance.

Why not just buy a tarp from Decathlon and place that over the roof? £20...

We purchased one when they first came out and used it last year. Not cheap for what it is and itís something else to put on/pack away. Though if itís going to protect a £600 tent and possibly make it last a little longer, itís worth the investment in my view.

It really does make the tent darker in the mornings as well as keeping it much cooler, where previously it would have been too hot and we would have gone out in the car to get out the heat. It can be a little tricky to get on sometimes.

A friends outwell Florida tent has just been destroyed by wind-nothing extreme. The roof has ripped off and when they enquired about repair, discovered the material was too brittle-from uv damage. I'm sure it was a 2011 tent with about 4 weeks use per year. Call me cynical but seeing these roof protectors begs the question-have outwell discovered that this is happening more and more?

Oatcracker - could have a point there, never heard of that, awful.

Our tent is a older Montana model and the roof material seems more delicate and worn compared to the rest of the tent ....

I would be happy to spend 70.00 if it gives a few more years of the tent being useable.....
