Hi guys, to those that read and reply thank you.
So, I loved camping as a kid and it's something my partner has never done. She loves weekends away but hates long car journeys and won't get on a plane (you see my predicament). Back story I have proposed before.... Terribly, since then ring was to big and got lost.... Anyway, I want to do it again but circumstances mean I can't afford anything extravagant. Which brings me here.

I'm looking for suggestions for somewhere to camp for free. Where I can drive right up to a secluded spot. Ideally by a river or lake with nice views pitch up and spend the night. Naturally I don't wanna drive somewhere and not tell her what were doing to then involve a great long hike etc.

So any recommendations would be fantastic. We live in Sheffield but happy to drive anywhere for the right place.

Thanks again to those who helped.

The Lake District springs to mind. However, donít think youíll be able to drive directly to where you are camping as wild camping is not permitted on road verges. Maybe call the Lake District tourist information offices and see if they have any ideas.

From Sheffield i would say somewhere in the Peak District although i'm not sure of anywhere you could do it for free.

-------------
May - Spring Valley
June - Fforest Fields
August - Leekworth

I think your lady might prefer a campsite with proper facilities, especially if you might want her to come camping with you again....For the £20 or so for a night's stay.

Maybe the question to ask is for a campsite where you can pitch near a river or top of a hill with a view?

That thought crossed my mind too. Even basic facilities (eg a toilet!) would probably be appreciated.

Snag with camping free is you might find yourselves being asked to move on, which would squash the romance somewhat, not to mention having to pee behind a bush which is unnerving if you're not used to it! I've stayed at Haddon Grove campsite, not far from Bakewell; pleasant surroundings and you can walk into Lathkill Dale from the site.https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results3.asp?search=Haddon%20Grove&by=sitename
