Hi folks, in preparation for our ( hopefully 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻) first trip of the season, we need new tyres either the dreaded Tyron bands. Our van is in storage near Nantwich, Cheshire, can anyone recommend a tyre fitter? Thanks

Here is a company that does mobile tyre fitting in your area but if you call them for a quote make sure that you request tyres for a single or twin axle caravan. A single axle caravan should have reinforced tyres to carry the extra weight but they should have a budget price, mid range price and known branded prices.

I hate to state the obvious, but make sure they know what they are doing re Tyron bands.

It never occurred to me about this merely because my caravan wheels don't have them but totally agree with the above post because my mobile tyre fitter said that you need the right tools when Tyron bands are fitted to remove the existing tyre which some tyre fitters don't have. Quite often they struggle to remove the tyre then charge another 20 quid on top for the extra work involved.

You get the tool if you have them fitted, it comes in the pack with the bands.

I've got them fitted to my van, yes, you do get a tool supplied - it's a long Allen Key, to undo the clamp to enable removal from the wheel well.

The problem is that the tyre fitter has to break one tyre bead and then compress one tyre wall down to the other to access and remove the Tyron Band, BEFORE the old tyre can be removed! There are fitter tools to do this, but not all fitters will necessarily have them, and they are certainly not supplied to the user.

Of course, the process has to be repeated to refit Tyron Band when the new tyre is fitted.

Video of process here: https://youtu.be/khpKi2SQRQs

Not really terribly surprising some tyre fitters don't want the hassle or charge extra for the additional time involved. It must nearly double the time to fit a tyre compared to without Tyrons fitted!

I binned the Tyrons on one van when i changed the tyres. I think they are more bother than they are worth. My tow vehicle has alloy wheels - which i am using all the time, but doesn't have them. Fitters hate changing them, and charge you handsomely if they do happen to have the gear. Ok, its a 'safety feature' of sorts. But its even safer to not leave your drive. Its where do you stop?

Please excuse my ignorance...
Why choose tyrone brand? Why not just van tyres as I have fitted?
My local tyre fitters just recommend van tyres, why not?
I have a 3ton discovery with alloys, no special Tyrone brand tyres....Have to agree with my fitters, pointless!

Regards..

i jacked my van up and took the wheels down to my local tyre place..

the fitter asked if they were banded i said no but it turns out they were..

they are not banded now.. my tyres are 13 x 175 commercial tyres rated at 750kg or 1500kg for two...

my caravan weights a max of 1100kg.. way way less than what the tyres are rated at..

Tyron Band. It goes inside any type of tyre you have fitted. Purpose is to prevent tyre coming off rim if it deflates. While you would soon know if tyre deflated on your car you might be unaware that tyre had deflated on caravan until tyre came off rim & smashed the surrounding bodywork. Original purpose of Tyron Band was to go inside 4X4 tyres for use off road at very low tyre pressures to allow grip in thick mud.

I would agree that if tyres are of a suitable load rating. Kept at correct pressure & changed every 5 years Tyron Bands on caravans are more trouble than they are worth.

i was wondering what their useful purpose was supposed to be billy..

keeping extra low pressure tyres on the rim seems to make sense..

my pair of new but band-less tyres got the oko treatment to stop them ever going flat in the first place.. :)
