Hi, this is a bit of a strange question. I recently sold a Vango Gamma on Ebay. It was about 4 years old and I had used the tent about 4 or 5 times in all weathers, and it had proven to be fantastic quality, with no leaks whatsoever, even in torrential rain. I took care of the tent, cleaning it and making sure it was dry before packing it away.

The person who bought it from Ebay has now (2 weeks later) emailed me saying he put the tent up to check it was ok and has found the groundsheet to be "shredding" and leaving plastic all over his hands, and when entering the tent, his knees got wet straight away.

It just seems strange, as this tent proved to be 100% waterproof for us, and I did take good care of it. The last time we used it, about 2 years ago, it was absolutely fine. Could a groundsheet deteriorate like this over 2 years of no useage?

I wish I had checked it over before posting it!

Please help!!
Thanks!

I guess it could be possible if left damp but not that likely as you would see mould on the rest of the tent. To be honest I would bite the bullet and offer a refund on return of the tent, if it is genuine he will return, if not then chances are you won't hear another word from them.

i wouldn't refund anything perhaps the buyers used it and decided it didn't suite their needs.
for a fiver or so a cheap tarp will hide anything and after all its buyer beware in second hand goods.our vango is of the same age and its groundsheet is perfect.
i have seen groundsheets start to break up but in heavily used show tents after a couple of years in the sun

Mmmm, I would suggest that the buyer is 'trying it on' to get a full or part refund from you, without returning the tent   Usually when an ebay buyer returns an item, they have to stand the return cost themselves, so maybe he's hoping you'll just send him a refund & tell him not to bother returning it as it wouldn't be any good to you if the groundsheet is breaking up - therefore you would never know whether he was telling the truth or not.

Personally, I'd call his bluff & tell him to 'return it to you for inspection, and a refund if necessary'. Like Mifty says, I doubt you'll hear from him again.

I beleive the buyer!

What your buyer describes is exactly what has happened to our Vango groundsheet.  We used it a couple of times with no problem, and over time after that the groundsheet began to fall apart, with blue flakes coming off all over our equipment, and it stopped being water resistant.

We were just about to buy a new one when I read about Vango's Lifetime Guarantee, and so I emailed them last night in the hope that they will send us a replacement.

Hi Jon & welcome to the forum

I'd be interested to hear the outcome of this. Please let us know what Vango say, or do, about the problem.

Hi, thanks for all your responses to this. The buyer returned the tent, and unfortunately his complaint turned out to be true. The groundsheet is literally shedding material, leaving blue plastic shreds everywhere. I am hugely disappointed and will be contacting Vango, and will let you know what they say. I also feel pretty bad about not trusting the buyer!!!!

Cheers, Amy.

talk about de ja vu we have a Vango Gamma 350, its about 4 years old now and only been used 4 times, we have always made sure that it has been completely dry before storing it, but last time out a couple of weekends ago it was chucking it down and yes it leaked,  bits of blue were coming off the ground sheet every where we were thinking of just stitching in another ground sheet, but if they have a lifetime guarantee, its worth a try, have you heard anything back off Vango???

We have had a problem with a small vango three man tent with a sewn in ground sheet last year

In 2006 it was packed away and all seemed well and good, first outing last year and while pegging out the ground sheet ripped in there places and on further inspection the thing was completely rotten and the tent was rolled up and dumped in the skip

Just a quick update on the Vango situation. I wrote a letter to Vango head office explaining about the dissolving groundsheets and this morning I received a letter back from them, informing me that they will be sending me a Beta 350 (the new version of the Gamma 350) within the next week. Hooray for Vango! Now that is what I call customer service. I shall definitely continue to buy their products in future, so long as the groundsheet on the Beta 350 doesn't have any problems! I would definitely advise all others who have had this problem to write a letter of complaint. Cheers, Amy.

Hmmm...now I am worried about our VV500. It hasn't been used for the past 12 months. I think we shall have to get it down and check it this weekend. I know it sounds strange but is it just blue ones that are prone to rot..? ( I think ours is greeny/gray)

What with complaints about carpets and now groundsheets,Vango don't seem to have a reputation for quality. At least their customer service seems good.

So glad I have just seen this message board! I was about to throw my gamma 350 in the bin after experiencing the exact same problem... infuriating groundsheet deterioration.

...awaiting a response from Vango.

I'd suggest you email your retailer, and Vango, giving the URL's of these threads. It would seem yours isn't an isolated incident, after all, so yes, I do think they should credit you with the current price of a VV500 or fair equivilent, especially since you are prepared to risk another Vango and put good money towards the replacement.

Best of luck with it!
