Hi Andy, slightly off topic (but I am a member of the Orchy AS !!) any issues taking your motorbike camping ? My kids got me a new Vespa for my birthday so I'm in mod mode again and thinking about taking it to local sites whilst the wife takes the car. Then we've got it there for running about.

I'd be thinking about bringing it in at night on a mat, or during the day if we've gone off in the car. Do you mind my asking what security you use ? Chains, alarms etc ? My scoot has an immobiliser, but I'd use the chain too. Do sites tend to charge if you take a car plus bike ? Or does it vary ?

Any guidance/suggestions would really be appreciated

Hi all, i bought a pair of Vango 210cm king poles from www.best-buys.co.uk in Wellingborough near Northampton about three weeks ago. They only cost 11.99 and they also had a special deal going (buy any Vango product and get a free Vango mug, playing cards and air freshener!). i don't think they show them on the website but it's worth giving them a ring as they are really cheap. I bought the Coleman Perfectflow fold up stove (the red one that folds in half) for 49.99!!

Hi Mike,

Happy to tell you all I know.  However this July will be the first time the bike's actually come away with us.

I would say if you intend to take a bike then it's always worth ringing the site and discussing it with the Site Owner/Manager before you book.  I have spoken to some sites that flatly refuse to allow motorcycles but with most I would expect it to be at the Owner/Manager's discretion, as would the issue of any additional fee.  Fortunately the site we're visiting in July were very good about me taking the bike and waived the additional vehicle fee too.

As for security I would say treat leaving the bike on a campsite no different to leaving it anywhere.  Any precautions you can take are worthwhile.  I have a large security approved chainlock which I will be using and secure campsites with entry control etc were top of my wish list.

I've also bought a good quality motorcycle cover for the times when it might rain and we're using the living area.  It is waterproof and breathable.  I think this is important as there's no point keeping it dry if you end up with moisture and condensation on the inside of the cover.

Hope that helps.

Oh, cheers Andy, that's so helpful. The scoot's "vintage" style (but new) with leather seats, so a breathable cover would be handy.

Take your point about checking with sites first. I'm 60, on a little scoot, so "Hell's Angels" I'm not, and hopefully then not too "unacceptable" .

Site security another thing to look at.

Thanks again, and ride safe !

Mike, I think you should be fine finding somewhere to take the scoot really.  I've got a Suzuki Bandit 1250GT and I've always explained when enquiring with sites that it's a comfortable quiet tourer and not a snarling race replica with race cans!  It definitely makes a difference to give them a call.

Forgot to say before, Hello to Stu1377.  Welcome to the VOAS!

11.99 is not bad for the 210cm King poles but there are a couple of places slightly cheaper.  I can't find any locally tho, so in most cases I'll be paying a delivery charge on top which will bring it out about the same.  Still very tempted by going the whole hog and buying the extension, hmmm..... lol

I'm really looking forward to getting the bike away with us.  For the past couple of years I've done at least one trip where I've enquired about taking the bike and then ended up leaving it at home in the end.

Hope you have fun with the scoot this summer.

Hi Guys, Found this thread on google when looking for Orchy accessories,Just thought I'd stick my nose in and say hello :o)

I bought a The Vango Orchy 600 (Laurel/Sage) at the NEC in Feb, not had it up yet though as the lawn in our garden is to boggy and too small, I have the footprint, carpet and the premium extention, I had my eye on a Orchy for a few months before going to the NEC with the OH, was going to get something a bit smaller just for my son and myself for weekends but when wifey saw the Orchy she said get it and I'll come camping as well, so I did lol, we are now getting all our kit together for our first weekend In Derbyshire somewhere near the end of the month or the start of next month as soon as I get a tow-bar put on the car.

We use a Vango self inflating double mat. Absolutely brilliant. Cost 50 but it doesn't make you feel like it's going to go flat over night. Takes just seconds to inflate but slightly longer to roll up again!!! Wouldn't ever go back to an inflatable mattress again.

Welcome Noobs... or is that Chris and Sally?  I'm sure you'll have a great time camping, bet you can't wait! I'd have a 600 but cost has always been a factor and we can manage with the 400. It's a great tent no matter what the size!

I looked into getting a towbar for the car, as the only rear-mounted cycle carrier our car can have is a towbar mounted one, but I found they're so expensive! So we ended up with roofbar carriers instead. Much cheaper although we can't use the roofbox at the same time...

We started off with the inflatable mattress, but we found that the air inside got cold and the outside got damp. And then there's the deflation if you're sleeping on it for 7 nights. We've got the cheap folding camp beds from Go Outdoors and some foam mats from the pound shop. I sleep much better on the camp bed and there's room underneath for my shoes. Which means a much tidier sleeping pod!

Thanks Chelz, It's Chris BTW the OH(Sal)set this account up but I'm use it the most.

I managed to get the Orchy for 180 at the NEC and for this years model we couldn't say no, We wanted to get the one on display as we went on Sunday(last day of the show)but someone beat us to it and got an extra 10% off!

Think we're going to need a trailer with all the kit we're getting together but for this year we will be using a friends and the missus is paying for the toe bar \o/

I like the idea of camp beds myself but as we've not pitched the tent yet we're not sure we we'll the room in the sleeping pod,but if you can get some in a 400 we should be OK in a 600, yeah? going to pitch the Orchy this weekend for the first time as long as it stays dry, I'll take some picks..

Hi Chris

Don't know if it's just the two of you ? If your 2010 model has the clip up curtain across the bed inner, leaving it down gives you loads of space to play with...err, that doesn't sound quite right, but you know what I mean.

That's what we do when it's just me and t'other half.

You'll see when you test pitch it.

In ours we use an old school rubberized type double airbed over foam camping mats, a fleece on the bed, our double bag, then a fleece on top, and we're toasty. As a plus when we're on our tod, we can walk right round it.

BTW, cracking price for a 2010.

Enjoy

Hi Mike

There's three of us, the OH, myself and our 4 year old son.

Getting a couple of single airbeds is the other option we're looking at, was thinking of getting a eazy bed for our son any way and the airbeds we looked at were colemans.

BTW like you pic of the scooter, I've have had a Lambretta GP 150 and a Vespa in my time
