OK just caught up with some of the more recent posts now I've calmed down a bit.

In Devon we did experience some high winds and the bending poles. There were times when we thought 'this is going to be it - it's finally going to snap on us' but the tent made it. We just kept checking the guy ropes and repositioning them to try and oppose the wind as somebody mentioned above. It was the front of the tent which was taking the force of the wind that concerned us. We took the canopy down because it kept slipping off the tent and I didn't want it to rub against the tent and fray it like what happened with our first Orchy. I did get some foam pipe insulator though which fits over the front poles to protect the fabric and it did work.

We did suffer a splintered pole though on the canopy. Only discovered it when putting it away and it had been standing even with a broken pole. Through my fabulous mum and dad we got it fixed for free. So, another lesson learned, as soon as the wind picks up canopy comes DOWN!

Got a lovely new windbreak from Father Christmas too, so can't wait to try that out and see if it helps resist those nasty gusts!

I'm afraid I have been bad - I have let myself be tempted away by the new 2011 Vango Tigris 800 and extension. Mmmmmmmmmm.

200

Orchy & bits being sold to someone in my car club, so will still be able to admire it from afar.

Good luck with the coming season fellow Orchers

Just joined the AS, and looking forward to getting my Orchy 500, which we have also ordered today! Should be fun, as we're complete novices! Will probably give it a trial night away in a couple of weeks. Wish us luck!

Tuesday, 1 March 2011.

Tent has arrived this lunchtime.... No space to erect inside (surprise, surprise) and garden not big enough either... Mmmmm...
I've hefted the tent on back (in bag, a la rucksack, obviously) and it seems suitable for a walk for an hour or two... could leave car, take public transport and then walk for a couple of hours...(5 or 6 miles..?) wouldn't want to do more, but interesting options now seem possible.....

Packaging looks good... compact, good handles, black and yellow... trying to ignore fact that B & Y are danger singals on bees!...

Just wondering how much more gear - and especially its weight - we'll need for a first weekend camping.....?
Any suggestions gratefully received, folks!
Thanks in advance!
Peter and Caroline.

Has anyone got the Vango Orchy 600 tent with the Orchy 600 font canopy and, if so, how big does it make the pitching size?

Wow!!! I never knew this thread existed. We have a 2008 Orchy 500 in laurel. Not been pitched yet as when we bought it (unknowing to us at the time) I was 4 weeks pregnant. Glad we bought a small family tent now. We're taking our toddler camping for the first time in June. Cannot wait to pitch it (it's still in the plastic bag it came in!) I bought the carpet, footprint and windbreak at the time we purchased the tent, but have managed to get hold of a new sun canopy in the 2008 colours just last week so am even more excited now!

Glad to find a group as enthusiastic about the Orchy as I am... I just hope we can pitch it easily, as we don't want to look silly pitching at the campsite! (not enough space in our garden to trial pitch before we go!)

We've decided not to bother with a test pitch, but to watch the DVD as we pitch (have in-car DVD to keep our son amused). We've put up all sorts of tents in the past so we should manage (although we're the couple every sees rowing as the tent goes up!)

Ha, just discovered this thread!  We bought the 2010 Orchy 500 (Laurel) at the end of last season and it had its first proper outing this Easter in the gloriously sunny Lake District.  We bought the Orchy 500 extension prior to the trip (sadly in 2011 green - but never mind!) and the whole set up was great.  The only thing we have got to practise is using the king poles on the extension as they were not a sucess... any tips anyone?  The extension made a great kitchen/boot room.  Have also got the footprint and the carpet now.  I am going camping twice in the summer holidays just with my two boys (9 & 4) so although OH and I did the test pitch in the garden, myself and 9yr old did it ourselves in the Lake District.  Took about 40 mins in total (inc putting all the chairs, airbeds etc etc inside).

I'd not pitch a tent sense I was 16 and the wife never! (we'd always gone abroad till we had our son and didn't enjoy going over seas with children tbh) so going to the park was a great idea for use or any one else who hasn't pitch a tent for a couple of years :)! hope you don't have any probs with it :)

all the best 'sniffa

I have just bought an Orchy 400 for myself and the two dogs.

I am 5ft 9" and I can move about standing up, and I like the dome/tunnel design. It is a palace!! I found it easy and fast to erect for the first time, on my own. I bought the footprint and carpet as well, so I'm all set.

Off to the south Coast next weekend for the first proper pitch.......
