We're a family of five, and keen to begin camping in earnest next year.

The children have never slept in a tent, so I'm planning on a couple of 1-night trips (in the garden and at local sites) to see if they enjoy it.

If these trips go well, I'd like to fork out for a proper 7/8-berth family tent - one that's built to last.

However, for these early trips (just me and my 6 and 3 year old), I'd like to use a smaller tent that's easier to pitch.

We haven't been able to borrow any equipment, so we've been looking at cheap options.

Tesco is currently selling a 4-man single-layer dome tent for 20.
http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-4-man-single-layer-dome-with-porch/243-1757.prd?........

I couldn't find this specific model under tent reviews. There is a similar Tesco one with a rating of 8, but I note that has a much higher HH rating.

Can anyone advise whether this model would suffice for brief camping trips with the little ones, or is it so underspecced as to be useless? It's only 20, but I don't want to buy something I'll end up scrapping after one disastrous trip or a slight rain shower!

Thank you in advance for your views.

I think it looks pretty useless TBH. You want a minimum of 2000mm Hydrostatic head. Personally I wouldn't bother with a tent without an inner either.
This Millets Tent is quite a bit more money but I reckon would repay the extra cost by lasting longer and being more useful.

Please don't do it,could well put your children off for lfe, crawling about on your knees with 2 young children would not be pleasant...it has a very low ceiling height,my recommendation is look about on gumtree or even ebay for a taller second hand tent with separate living area, may well cost more but there are still bargains to be had,I advertised my brand new unused urban escape 4 man tent on gumtree and had no interest,I was selling at 50 but have sold used ones for 30,if an advert has been on for a few weeks it is still worth getting in contact as it may still be available,I decided to keep my tent in the end, dont know whereabouts you are but I have a Coleman 4 man tunnel/stroke dome you could have for 20,good sized bedroom and separate living area with standing height in living area, used but easy enough for one to put up and still waterproof, also it is well worth keeping your eye out in charity shops,my bargain of the year was an Outwell Virginia for 25 ! good luck, evo

A single skinned tent will be so bad with condensation that it will almost be like it's raining inside.

If you touch the sides at all, even more water from rain or even dew will have a place to get in.

It's not worth even 20.

If you dont mind sharing your bed with the little ones, you may as well buy this oposed to the tesco and at 170 cm height should be good but for all but the tallest.

Iam 6' 4" and have it for solo camping or with my boy when we go fishing.

My sister bought a Tesco 4 man tent and didn't look at it before going away. (Some 4 man are quite big ) She paid for bigger pitch and what a laugh. it was so tiny. even for 2 people. Crawl in type and pathetic really. No living area at all. But what can you expect at that price. Please don't waste your money. If you can afford a better tent please do. head height is great, especially with the family, avoids crawling around , much easier. What about second hand better tent. and sewn in groundsheet a must for me. If you are well equipped the children should love it . Enjoy.

Truth is you get what you pay for, had a look at tent in Tesco as the had it on display and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, would probably put your family off camping for life.

As said earlier you'd be far better off buying a superior tent second hand and with kids you need a tent you can stand up in with some space inside.

Thanks for your responses everyone - looks as though that tent would be a mistake.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good secondhand one. I stopped in at all 11 charity shops in Tunbridge Wells this morning but to no avail!

Failing Gumtree or Ebay (or anyone on here in Kent with a tent to sell..?), I'll look at stretching my budget to pick up one of the two ones linked to in this thread.

Evochic - I'd take you up on the offer of the Coleman one, but I'm down in Kent unfortunately. Though if my role as a Tesco secret shopper takes me up to the East Midlands any time soon I'll be in touch ... ;-)

Definitely don't throw away 20 on the Tesco tent. As someone has said, the condensation will be something awful as it's single skinned.

Sports Direct have some good bargains at the moment. I've bought this tent for 75, for example.

Woohoo! I just won an auction on eBay for a Royal Memphis 5 tent. 32 the final price.

From the reviews for this model on here, and your helpful comments above, it looks as though this will be perfect for what we need.

Now to start on the list of other essentials...
