I have fallen in love 😍 with a tent . The cabanon biscaya. Since it will take forever to save up for a new one I find myself scouring sites for secondhand ones .
I have a few questions from current owners before I end up buying a second hand one.
Weight - how heavy are the bags I am assuming it's 3 bags (groundsheet, tent, poles)
I know the whole thing is 44kg which is far too heavy for me to lift in one go.
At the moment I have a berghaus air 4, I can lift in and out of the car and drag it upstairs to the back bedroom for storage (19kg)
How easy is it to pitch alone ? Although we are a family of 3 we all have fixed holidays and 9/10 they don't match up. So mostly it will be myself and a 6 year old.
Anyone have any alternatives to the biscaya if it does turn out to be too heavy / too difficult to put up. We are limited on storage so can't really justify keeping the berghaus and buying a cabanon.
Thank you
The weight given for the 440 is actually 54.6kg. But yes, it can be split down to 4 bags: flysheet, poles, groundsheet and inner.
Get the optional sun canopy if you can, as it makes a huge difference to the outdoor living space but takes up little more pitch room as it protrudes only a little over the side wings.
I've pitched a 370 by myself but, realistically, you need 2 people to pitch the 440.
They're lovely tents, when they're up: rock solid, dependable and comfortable to live in. It's a biggish tent but has no side or rear guys so will fit on smaller pitches. With them being all-season polyester (feels like stiff canvas) they're easier to care for than cotton or polycotton tents.
Cabanon did make a cotton canvas Biscaya 370 but only in 2007/08. I'm surprised Francais hasn't surfaced in response to your question, since he has this model and seems to like it a lot.
Best of luck, whatever you decide.
