Don't worry you'll be fine. Firstly, get yourself about fifteen 'groundsheet pegs (like long 'drawing pins') from your nearest camping shop...
Lay your 'footprint' groundsheet down (put a peg in each corner if it's breezy) and pitch your 'Classic XL' over it, as normal (putting the groundsheet down first, prevents the tent getting wet or muddy, if it's been raining). If you've pegged the corners of the groundsheet, take them out once the tent is pitched...
Go inside the tent and fold back one side of the groundsheet about a foot, pull the mud/draught flaps in and peg them down (without pulling them too taut), using the 'groundsheet pegs' mentioned earlier. Do each side of the tent in turn, in the same way. Then reposition your groundsheet squarely inside your tent, covering the mud/draught flaps, then peg it down at the corners and on each side, using the fitted webbing straps... Fit your inner tent (which incidentally has a raised, fitted groundsheet, so no slugs or anything can get into it anyway) and... Hey Presto... You have a draught free, slug free tent!...
It really is very easy to do, but some people insist on a S.I.G. because they don't know how to pitch a tent with seperate groundsheet properly, to exclude draughts etc...

sorry Andy Pandy, for some reason i have only just seen your reply.
I wasn't sure about the footprint groundsheet but having read your excellent instructions i think i will get one.
I bought the Khyam XL because of the big open living area where you can sit around, eat and drink (and in my son's case keep motorbike gear) without worrying about damaging the floor of the tent. I haven't had a chance to unpack it yet but i understand that the bedroom, as you say, has a raised groundsheet. Hopefully that will be sufficient to keep out slimey things ...
but i'll take some salt, in case, wilburpig
My plan was to use a cheap tarp under the bedroom to protect it and keep it clean ... as i did with my lovely 2 second tent ... but now i understand how to use it i will get a 'footprint' after all.
thank you

we have had a go at putting up the XL and it wasn't bad for a first attempt. I haven't got round to getting the fitted groundsheet yet but i was wondering... when i do...
does it peg into the eyelets in the mudflaps
thanks for the tip about groundsheet pegs. I was worried about pegging inside the tent with the ordinary ones.
i knew camping would turn into another shopping opportunity :)
nb: we used our cheap but huge tarp from the market to keep our new tent squeaky clean while we faffed about working out how to unravel it and get to the camel's leg stage.

Hi, 'Sonja.p'...
No, the eyelets dont match up, just peg the mud/draught flaps inside the tent. When you've got your groundsheet, you'll find it fits 'snuggly' over the top of the draught flaps. It's secured with 'webbing' straps, one on each corner and one on each side, which will hold it nice and flat. There are additional 'eyelets' on the groundsheet, that you can use, but I only bother with the ones around the door (just so the edge doesn't turn up and you trip over it!). By the way, next time you pitch the 'XL Classic' it will be easier still. Before you know it, you'll be doing it without instructions, in no time at all. It's good to do a couple of 'practice runs' first... Andy...
P.S. On the groundsheet, when you get it, you'll see two small 'machined' slits. These go beneath the front of the 'inner tent' and take the two pegs (one each side) which holds the front of the 'inner tent' down...

The Khyam Classic XL was everything i thought it would be. Like a Gazebo with en suite bedroom. The SIG for the 'inner' was nice and deep so i wasn't worried.. even during torrential rain, when water might have come running underneath. I had used my groundsheet pegs to pin down the mudflaps (are they supposed to tuck inside rather than outside? ) and although we didn't have the official fitted groundsheet, the one i already had was fine for the job. We had a double inflatable mattress in the middle of the bedroom and found the doors either side very convenient. We kept the mesh doors closed and not even a daddy longlegs or a mozzie got inside.. although i was well prepared for that too, with an electro zapper racquet thingy :)
If the ground had been grassy i would not have had a groundsheet at all in the 'living' area. However the pitches in the New Forest had no grass so i spread a groundsheet (£10 in the market) the entire length of the tent. I pegged it down by the doors and when it got very muddy it was easy to sweep out. I would have been very frustrated trying to keep a full SIG clean in the weather that we had.
The sun shone too and a tent isn't as shady as a gazebo of course. I think, looking at pictures, the pre 2006 Classic may have has another mesh side, which would have been nice.
We did have leaks (the tabs where the inner hangs got sodden and there was a wick effect) and we had a bit of a flood by the door but we'd had steady rain for about 18 hours by then so i was not surprised.
We had no trouble pitching the tent or taking it down.. even though i had left the instructions behind! It was probably better to just get to know the tent rather than try to match the pictures in the book. Luckily we had lovely weather at the start and finish of our little holiday so we didn't have to worry (this time) about how to dry out a soggy tent which is bigger than any of the rooms in our house ... another reason for not having a full SIG.

Hi, 'Sonja.P'...
I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to the New Forest, using your 'XL Classic' for the first time...
I got back yesterday, from 10 days in Norfolk and had a great time too. We had mixed weather, sunny and warm (up to 75 deg.F.) and some torrential downpours too (the 'tail end' of a hurricane apparently!)...
I always peg the draught/mud flaps inside and then place the groundsheet over them. The 'footprint' groundsheet has webbing straps, which allow you to secure it tightly on the corners and sides and also eyelets (which line up with the door flaps) so you can peg it down there. I haven't had the 'wicking' you experienced, but next time you pitch the tent, just put a 'dab' of the seam sealant (you should have got a little tube with the spares) at the join with the tent and that should cure it.
I usually use the 'J door' for 'coming & going' and push the 'flaps' out, to prevent rain coming in at the bottom. The 'canopy door' I peg under the groundsheet, it's easy to take the 'groundsheet pegs' out when you open the canopy on warm days. I used the canopy several times this trip, on the sunny days, but kept the 'mesh' panel zipped down, or we'd have been inundated with Crane flies!... Andy...
