I like a SIG and I put a cheap blue tarpaulin on the ground first where the tent is going to go, so the groundsheet isn't going to get all mucky.

What a good idea. Just bought my Soulpad 5000 hybrid and haven't used it yet as Ibought it for this Summer 2013, so don't really want to get it all mucky. Thanks

i just moved to the cleveland 5 it has both. its perfect for us as we have a dog and we can cantain her in the front of the tent and just take out and clean it when it needs it or in the summer we can just have grass there. the sleeping area has a sig so no nasty bugs or cold chills in the wind.

Had a couple of days of torrential in our new tent...with a SIG ...fantastic! Dry and cosy... loved our other poly cotton tent but I know we would have had water coming in!

Me and my family have just been camping for the first time this year. We thankfully had a Vango air beam to start our camping ventures in. I can safely say 4camping holidays later (this summer) me and my partner n children wouldn't have n joyed it as much if we hadn't of had sewn in ground sheets!!they kept us very dry in some really bad rain!!!
Must admit we didn't bother with the groundsheet in the porch. !!!

Most tents when I first started camping had loose groundsheets in the living area (or those I could afford did). I wasn't too concerned about the bugs because the bedroom pods always had sewn in groundsheets and by keeping the door closed and closing it after stepping in or coming out it was very rare to get anything inside.

My concern was always the draught that came under the flysheet or probably even more annoying, rain dripping off the flysheet onto the groundsheet and running inside the tent, usually pooling around the feet of tables and chairs, and having to keep everything off the floor or inside the bedroom pod.

I saved up my pennies and eventually managed to afford a large tent with a sewn in groundsheet...what a difference that made! With a fitted carpet which didn't get wet, electric hook-up, heater and other mod-cons it became home from home...warm and comfortable, without draughts and no need to continually wear an anorak.

A large living area that one can comfortably sit and eat in and store things in, large windows to watch other less fortunate campers swabbing out their groundsheets dressed like arctic explorers, was an added bonus. I would never buy a tent with a loose groundsheet again.

HI there,

I'm new to all this camping. After a bit of research I understand what a sewn in groundsheet is.
I've been looking at some Vango tents though and they have a "linked in groundsheet"?

Is this just clipped to the fly?

Do tents have a groundsheet beneath the sleeping area in most cases? (i.e, there are usually 2 layers between your sleeping bag and the grass?)

Just been camping for the first time in our new big Obelink frame tent. The ground sheet is seperate. I know it was a bit cold because of the increase in draft because it is not sealed, but we do bring plenty of bedding etc.

With this canvas tent though I preffered it not to be sown in so that when folding it all back into the bag I was not rolling the canvas tent into its bag with a damp ground sheet that's been on the ground. I expect a canvas tent to last and stay waterproof for years which I don't think will happen if I have to fold it up with a damp groundsheet.

Hi miniardifans,
The trick there, is to use a footprint under your main groundsheet. Basically, it's an extra sheet, be it a purpose made one specifically made for your tent, or a builders tarp from B&Q... or anything waterproof and of the right size. Laid flat below your tent, and just a couple of inches smaller than the outside perimeter of your tent, it will keep all but the very outside edges of your SIG or ZIG clean and dry (you can towel these bits as you roll it up), and is easy to get clean and dry once back home.
Just make sure the footprint never protrudes outside of the tent edges, as it will collect any rain, which may run between your main groundsheet and the footprint. As they are both waterproof, any puddle will stay there until you go home!

Good for under a ZIG... GREAT for under a SIG!!

I am not quite sure what 'linked in' means but if it was a fully sewn in groundsheet it would say so. I would imagine 'linked in' means clipped to the flysheet in some way.

On tents with loose groundsheets, the groundsheet usually only covers the living or porch area. Then they will have a sewn in groundsheet on the bedroom pod i.e nothing else between the bedroom groundsheet and the grass.

However, sewn in groundsheets cover the entire tent floor and are sewn in around the entire bottom of the flysheet like one big pod, and as you guessed, the bedroom pod also has a sewn in groundsheet and so that then makes two groundsheets above the grass.

The advantage of sewn in groundsheets apart from being draught free and helping to keep bugs out, is that the bedroom pods can be left attached to the clips inside and the tent can be erected all in one without having to keep fitting up the bedroom pods each time...an absolute chore in a boiling hot tent.

The slight disadvantage is that the bottom of the sewn in groundsheet will get wet and muddy and will need cleaning off...hence, as Mucker has described, a footprint underneath the tent keeps the tent's groundsheet clean and fairly dry. The footprint can be folded up separately and easily cleaned at home. You will also then have 3 groundsheets between your sleeping bag and the grass - lol.

The difference when packing away a tent with a loose groundsheet and a tent with a sewn in groundsheet is that you usually leave the doors closed on a tent without a groundsheet attached. On a tent with a sewn in groundsheet you have to make sure all the doors are open (including the inners) so that when you roll it up the air can escape...otherwise you will be struggling with a big bag full of wind.

As Bob61 states the linked in ground sheet (as in our Berkley 5) is a removable groundsheet that is linked via toggles to the fly sheet (so it can be removed to cleaned), somewhat academic as we use a separate footprint - so it does not get dirty. However as it comes somewhat up the sides - does act as a good wind stopper.

Yeah I already thought of that and bought a tarp of ebay that was roughly the footprint of the tent. Mainly because I didn't want any nice new canvas touching the grass or getting damp or being rolled up with grass or damp when packing away.

I think our main problem was I didn't understand to then fold the tent flaps under this ground sheet to keep the drafts out. My mistake and hence to cold draughty tent and some slight pooling of water when it did rain. Will know better next time as it was the first time I'd pitched a tent like this for a long time.

Depends on the time of year, on the weather, on how you feel. Camping in cold Scotland at easter (this year it went down to -3 at night) sig's are better or in a torrential downpour will keep the tent much drier but camping in Europe in summer or here even if it's warm enough, sig's will reduce airflow. My next tent's gonna be a canvas monster with a zig. I've come to the conclusion that unless you have at least half a dozen tents in your spare room to choose at any given moment ranging from backpackers to canvas monsters your never gonna be satisfied

With misgiving I bought a new Outwell Calgary 300 (with SIG) this year for the festival season and I have to say all my misgivings have come true so I'm selling it.

A tent that has the potential to become a paddling pool isn't good for the chaotic nature of festivals. Only 4 festivals in to the season I've got mud stains on the inside walls of the tent - impossible to avoid unless you diligently clean the groundsheet before packing. I've had to do several mopping up of puddles due to rain incursions/spillages that would have harmlessly soaked into the grass in a non-SIG tent and at a festival last weekend a leftover half pint of beer fell over and ran under the (now non-waterproof) inner tent and soaked through to my belongings. As a summer camper I value good ventilation over draught-proofness and the sealed up nature bothers me when I'm boiling up a some water on the camp stove for a morning cup of coffee (carbon monoxide).

Happily though I've just found a hardly used Outwell Arizona L on ebay for £65 which is the same (but non-SIG) design, so it's out with the new and in with the old!
