Boy, this is a hot topic..... gawd' we are a sad bunch !  ;->

However, it is not so simple is it dr Watson... there are SIGs and there are SIGs and not all SIGs are equal.

For instance there are SIGs with flysheets (Montana and Aurora), effectively making a single skin tent, where the bedrooms are just handing dividers; and there are SIGs on the inside (like a Hartford or Aspen), where the tent is effectively a double skinned tent. Hyperthetically, the latter should be better on condensation and warmth, but in practice, there probably is not much diference.

I have also seen SIGs in tents that were quite frankly not worth it, where the groundsheet was flat to the ground at the entrance and all the mud and rubbish just came in the tent... and stayed in. In my book, if there is not a chance of tripping over it, it ain't worth it !

(and forigive the spellling!)

Outside? It'd just get wet & soggy in the british weather!!!  We use a small carpet just inside the tent door to dry off wet feet though.

Your all worrying me now. Just bought the Wynnster mercury 9 excel for our first ever camping holiday for 2 adults and 4 children. I don't think the mercury 9 has a SIG in the living area, so are we going to expect to see many bugs & mice inside and flooding from the rain? and will it be really chilly?. We will only use it between April and September but i'm beginning to think I made the wrong choice not getting a tent with SIG. HELP

First holiday is to Devon in August, although we are going to try it out first on May Day in my brothers back garden in Cambridge.

   Hi, Stig 72...

Have a look at the other thread "S.I.G.s, and disadvantages"... There's nothing to be worried about, I've used a 'normal' seperate groundsheet for years and have never had a mouse, or any other wildlife, in my tent, nor have I ever been flooded either... Don't worry, just enjoy your camping... Andy

Me neither - and we've been camping loads. We store our food and cooking equipment in plastic crates / cool box so there's no food to tempt any wildlife on offer - plus if there is a flood nothing will get soaked.

Hi Stig 72

we have a wynnster mercury 9 and have experienced both a mouse in the tent during the night and wind coming under the tent.  The main area has mud flaps which can be pegged down so no problem but the sleeping areas have none and we just can't seem able to pitch it without a fair gap between ground and tent. Having said that with good sleeping bags not had a problem with being cold whilst asleep! Contacted wynnster for advice and told gap is normal and there for ventilation purposes. Apart from that and getting wet from condensation whilst reaching for the zip on the slanted door in the morning this is really a great tent.

Just enjoy the tent. The SIG has the advantage of warmth but inner goes up first.

If it start to rian with a tent like that you just pitch it faster!!

The Monty's got a SIG and goes up fly first (or both together) and you can take down the inner first if you need to in wet weather.   On our first trip with the Monty we had to take it down in wind and heavy rain - managed to prevent it being the biggest stunt kite in the UK but by the time we got home the SIG had become a large pond that we had to mop out.       Wouldn't be without the SIG, though - no ground level draughts, bugs or other unwanted visitors.

Our lesson for the future - when the weather's been poor and we're at the end of the holiday if the tent's dry and so is the weather, we won't hang on that extra day and possibly have to de-tent in rotten weather.    Think that applies, SIG or no SIG.    (And that's probably obvious to everyone but us!)

We are idiots ourselves so far as the Monty is concerned - last time was the first time.   Basically we followed the instructions in the bag and it's pretty straightforward.    I've seen a couple of threads on here though about erecting the Monty and people with much more experience than us have posted.   If you do a search on Montana I think you'll find them.

Just a couple of tips though:

Get all the poles out and assembled before you get the tent out of the bag, then you can lay it out and you're ready to put the curved poles into the sleeves on the roof.    We did it the other way round and by the time we'd got all the poles sorted there was a lake on the tent which soaked us when we started to put it up.

We pegged out the corners before we put any poles in,  just so it wouldn't fly away!   Some people don't peg out until later.   Scary.

Definitely make sure you unzip the front door so that when you start to erect the tent you're not pulling against the vacuum inside.

We struggled last week (in the rain) getting the pins into the poles until we noticed the straps on the bottom of the flysheet are adjustable down the left hand side (as you look at the front).   DOH!  If you put the poles onto the pins on the right hand side first then you can let the straps off on the other side to let you get the pins in the poles.

We haven't worked out yet how the mini groundsheet fits into the rain porch ...

The Monty was smashing once we'd got it up.   Loads of space and lovely and light inside.   Enjoy.

Carol
