Thanks Rolph, there's some great pictures there, thanks for naming the tents so we know what we're looking at.

Now this one is definitely not camping for wimps.

No Emile is a real die hard!

The picture in the snow is not normal for a cotton tent! Don't do it! It can break because of the ice on the cotton. This was an 'accident'.....
Normally you really nead an polyester tent for camping in snow!

When you have a question about the name of a De Waard you can mail the picture to me or show it here..

Hi Karen

Your Trio looks a nice tent as well.  Haven't seen one like that in Britain, only in France and that belonged to a Dutch family.

Tessa

Yes, it's a lovely tent, and we have only ever seen one in this country, a bit smaller, and I think that was owned by Dutch people too!

Congratulations.
And don't forget the proper order of putting up the poles: the two at the entrance first, only after that the centre pole (and canopy poles last, but that's less important). Makes erecting a lot easier.

Cornerhouse, there are some instructions on the de waard website that you can print out for putting up their tents.

You need to peg it out symetrically using the guys from the main seams on the canvas first, so if you peg out a guy on one side, then go and do the one on the opposite side next.  The instructions usually give you a number order of which ones to peg out first.

And when you pack it away, make sure the zips are not rubbing against the pvc windows on the doors.

Let us know how you get on.

This message is for the attention of wlee.

I was blown out of two tent's on my summer holidays in Wales this year and I need to buy a new one, I'd love to get a Karsten tent but wow they are lots of money. Do you think they are worth it? And is there a second hand market for them where you live?

I'd love to actually see one but the UK showroom is 4.5 hours from my home in london.

Yes, they are worth the money, otherwise I certainly would not have bought one myself.
Extremely sturdy, sewn in groundsheet of heavy quality etc. I have stood hard winds with it already.
Very easy erecting, certainly the basic module, but also awning/canopy is very easy/fast. They have relatively very few pegs but stand winds very well in spite of that, due to shape and construction. Some types in fact are tested in high winds, a bit smaller type even up to Bf 12!

They do sell second hand, but I don't know the exact curcuit for that yet. Have to check.
There is at least one day a year at Karsten where you can sell your tent, I think.
I'll get back. Have to find out for myself too, as I change to a tin tent.
Problem for the second hand market is the sea in between UK and Netherlands. This makes sending over very expensive, and they are fairly heavy tents.

In choosing you have to take account of the fact that they have a simply square groundshape. Within this you do the sleeping plus when on wet/swampy ground you might eat inside etc. Plus possibly an awning, depending on the accessoires you buy (I have canopy plus frontwall=kind of awning), extension part is possible to create more space.
Ventilation system is very effective.
I don't know whether I can still find it on a picture in use (period of breaking up, so less pictures). I'll check when at home.

Thanks wlee

Can I pick your brains a little more.

Because of their pyramid like design do you have much dead space where the wall meets the groundsheet? You have the 325, but I'm thinking it may not be big enough for our purposes, did you ever wish you had gone for the larger tents? Also do you have to make sure nothing touches the wall of the tent to prevent water getting in?

A Karsten is not a pyramid !! Look at their website. It is an inflatable tent with the quality of a De Waard. The concept is quitte different though..

And in a De Waard there is off course the wall that comes down. The lowest space is where you sleep. Not a big problem.
Consider a tent with 2 primary poles at the top (like the Vergrote Zilvermeeuw, Jan van Gent, Roerdomp) Those tents have a different angle between the wall en the ground....

Hello all, finally got back to the computer! Well, we took our new DeWaard out on Sunday and managed to put it up in a short time, and with less agro than a nylon pod tent we already have lurking about! We followed the instructions printed from the DeWaard website, remembering tips anyone else has passed onto us (thanks!) It's going to be a learning curve, remembering to hook the sleeping dividers onto the poles before erecting them, and learning exactly where to put poles/guys outside so we don't trip over or strangle ourselves (very strange concept to us, as the Trio has none of either!!! Bottom line is, we love it already and can't wait to use it properly       Anyone want to buy a Trio????

I have a question about pegging out - there were metal pegs and unused long wooded ones. Is there an avantage to using the wooden ones, and if so, how far should they be knocked in??

Also, with the pegs, there were about 12 large white, not very stretchy elastics about 3-4 inches diameter. Any idea what they are for????

Wlee/PaulJacey I can highly recommend UPS for delivery - they brought the DeWaard tent/poles/extras weighing about 77kgs from Wuppertal in Germany to North Devon for just under £80, collect tues, deliver thurs.

Wooden pegs are ideal to use in the dunes!

And the elastics are for the windschield(s) Normally there are 5 D-rings at the bottum. There you will have to use the elastic to put the shield nice and tidy

Is camping in the dunes a regular thing in Holland then?!

The elastics seem too fat to fit into the D-rings, maybe we need to take another look:-)

Yeah! Look for camping sites at one of the islands like Texel, Terschelling etc. You really nead wooden pegs there. And it is full of De Waard tents over there because they are so strong in the wind. Stormtent is also a name for Pyramid-tents. (they started out as type De Waard)
