Rolph,

I hope you don't mind me asking a question. Some years ago we had a Walker International tent + Mostert telescopic tentpoles that we bought in the Netherlands. The poles were stolen (don't ask!) but we still have the tent.  Does Walker International still exist, do you know?  It would be great if we could replace the poles and use the tent again. It looks a bit like your De Waards.

Many thanks,

Liz

OK, some point, as far as not already answered above, maybe doubled.

Wooden pegs, yes for sandy ground. Don't think of the Dutch Dunes only. I know even a place in ireland where they wopuld be usefel, and also in France. In general, with sandy soil wooden pegs give more grip than metals pegs.

I don't know about Wlker International, but Walker as a brand still exists. In fact my awning is manufactured by Walker. So i suppose they still are there.

De Waard and randstad are Pyramid tents, Karsten is an Iglo shape. Both shapes are very storm resistent.

Randstad and De Waard have more inside floorspace, but also take more outside space. It's a matter of style of camping. As far as pitches are concerned: I can do with a far smaller pitch with a Karsten tent than with Randstad or De Waard. Reason is in the shape and the way you have to peg them out following from the basic shape of the tent.
In general an karsten needs far less pegs than a Randstad or De Waard, without loosing storm-safety. Just a different concept.

Did I wish to have gone for a larger tent: no, but I bought the Karsten after I had the Randstad for many years, Different family circumstances and a wish for faster setting up and less pegs. Due to the round shape standing Karsten has standing height over a larger area. But in fact less square feet for airbeds/inflatables. The other two have more ground space, but less standing space. It's a matter of choice. I was satisfied, but in a period with small children the Randstad was perfect. But again. more effort to setup. As to security and storm safety: equal.

Touching the wall was no problem in either of them. Modern canvas is very strong and sturdy. In both tents the kids have put their head in the canvas durinh heavy rain without any problem. Touching is no problem. You really have to rub and rub and rub again very strongly to cause a problem, which after drying will be solved by itself by the way. I never missed an inner lining.

P.S. Added:
Dead space: No. The lower part of the walls rise half a mtr straight up before inclining. In practice this is where one puts hid bags in the sleeping room and in the living space, one puts the cooking box overthere, etc. One always need some space to put down luggage, shoes etc. In the sleeping space, this also provides a certain measure of insultaion: cold does not radiate towards the sleeping persons immediately as the bags are in between. I also used those bags to keep the kids in place, the would not rool of their matres/inflatable.

Mostert frame: I found reference to Mostert poles still in 2003 tents. So Mostert also should still exist.

Yes please - back to those wooden pegs.... when we looked at them and tried them, the d rings on the tent only seemed to fit about half way up the peg, and wouldn't fit over the top into the notch??????

Our local dunes are not for camping in - they are part of a Unesco Biosphere, and parts of them are used by the Marines for training - don't really want to wake up to a troop of marines with guns & tanks etc!!!!!!

Hi Cornerhouse, not sure if this is going to make sense.

The D rings require the big rubber bands.  Push a rubber band halfway through a D ring, then fold the rubber band so you are holding the two ends of it with the middle of it through the D ring.  Put the peg through the two ends of the rubber band.

It's really difficult to try and describe it in words without physically showing you how to do it.

Hello folks, long time no post - life just gets busier! Well I am happy to report that we have had our first proper holiday in our DeWaard. 10 days in cornwall and glorious weather for the first half, then all change to terrible wind & rain (anyone else camping early last week in Devon or Cornwall will know what I mean!) In the heat it's a dream and stays surprisingly cool, however when the wind & rain came in we had to change things about a bit to make it work.

Rolph or Wlee may be able to advise me about this - we have 2 wind triangles and a sunroof so we were able to move the triangle to whichever side they were needed, and bring the sunroof down to a lower lever (below the top of the nasty blue windbreak - it's gotta go, spoils the look of the tent!) I'm sure I've read or seen pictures somewhere that you can get a canopy that is longer than the sunroof which has zips so you can attach it to the wind triangles to keep out the bad weather.

We were lucky to find a Stormvogel on the site and learned a few little tricks from the owners! Their wind triangles were probably twice the size of ours, and we wondered if they would also work with our tent also?

We LOVE our new tent and have no regrets on selling the Trio to our friend - who loves it also! I will update the pics in my gallery when I can remember how to make pics smaller!

I dont now about De waard, but I do know that Randstad has zip-triangles and zip-sunroof. And even if it would not be ready available any good tent-workshop can attach zippers to sunroof and triangles.

I never bought a separate sunroof, as the fixed one on my Randstad Bever was enough. Randstad has 1 1/5 mtr depth as standard , De Waard only 1 mtr, hence more often a sparate sunroof is bought.

As to the frontal wind: the fixed canopy-part should never be set too high. Poles backward a bit. In the beginning i used to set the canopy too high.
If the canopy is set too high the wind gets underneath much easier, plus water does not run down easily enough.
Same probably will be true for a separate sunroof. If it is pointing upward or is set too level, the wind will easily catch it like it would any other awning/canopy.

I had one wind triangle with my Randstad (very similar, brother of De Waard), which worked well, but I have seen double ones. It may be useful, but frankly I even only rarely used the single one. only in case of a lot of wind.

I did however always watch the situation of the site well for the prevailing winds. I found that I could have 3/5 of the clock as wind directions without problems, hence even from sideways front. Only full front could be a problem, like it would be for any tent. It has proven more flexible than other tents in that respect. And even than it was possible to bind up the canopy-part, but I usually could set it low enough not to be caught by the wind (and I had some nasty thunderstorm in Scotland, with very changeable winds).
If in doubt about prevailing wind direction I tried to set the tents sidways on both directions, hence catch the wind on the side. That has more often proven to be very useful, e.g. in the French Jura, where remainders/outflows of the Mistral (Mistral du Midi) run. By day about force 5 Bf into the valley, evening 5 Bf outward of the valley: 180 degree turn! At that particular occasion I decided not to choose view over the valley, but toward the hill, which proved the best possible choice. Other tents had problems pitching those days. We were set nice and cosy.

Have fun.

Thank you for that, all information helps! Last week we had pitched with our back & side to the wind, and that was fine, but when the weather changed, the wind was coming directly into the front which was not pleasant.

Rolph, I have tried to register on your forum to post the same questions directly to DeWaard, but I cannot log in because it says I have forgotten my password - but I have not!!! Can you please help me with this maybe? Thanks, Karen

Hi Karen

First time I've logged in for ages - currently using a friend's computer as I'm computer-less.

We had the option of a sun canopy, which is basically a straight out piece of canvas, or a 'varioluffel' (not sure about the spelling) which is huge canopy - I call it a car port - and you can 'vary' the way you have it.  In the wind and rain you can really batten down the hatches, have all the sides down and the front down low.  When it's sunny,  you do a bit of unzipping, alter the length of the poles and have it up.

I've got an Albatross Junior which came with two very large wind panels and the variable canopy.  My friends have got the Albatross which they had with three smaller wind panels and a sun canopy.  I know they recently bought the variable canopy, but I'm not sure whether they had to get another wind panel as well.

You can phone or email DeWaard and they are very helpful - I investigated getting one earlier this year - however, you really still have to travel to Holland to order/spec your order. So if you are passing through Holland, might be worth travelling to one of their shops (and only their shops).

In the end I decided to look out for similar tents from Cabanon (Pyramide, Barbados etc.) or Relum (htink it is call something like the "Holland"), which are available here. They are not as stylish as some of the more way-out DeWaards, but are still good and very well made.

Recently there have been a few of the Cabanon's come up for sale S/H on ebay... and I got one.. a Cabanon Pyramide 6. And a fine tent it is.. Highly recommended if you want simple and easy canvas.

Like the look of the DeWaard tents.  We saw one last time we were away.  It belonged to a Dutch couple who claimed that it was a reasonable price as well, however they would not say how much.
