Hi Bowerbird, glad you are happy with your Lepelaar! Can I ask did you order your tent without seeing it in the flesh, or visit Uden twice? As I said earlier, we are going to Uden in July and though I would prefer to only go once, i'm not really prepared to order without seeing one first!

Also, I know that the tents are made to order, but apart from adding zigschermrns, varioluifel etc, to what extent can you personalise your tent? I have noticed that on  photo's the curtain that divides the sleeping area are different patterns/colours, personally I would prefer a plain one in bergundy to match the front!  Do you think this is an option?

I will be contacting the store in Uden to let them know we are coming, and also to see if they may have stock, but don't want to sacrifice being able to specify exactly what I want if there are lots of other options!

Hi lentrott

You really need to be contacting DeWaard now about the tent you want.  I got mine in May 2000 and phoned them up the previous November about it.  I had been told by my Dutch friends that they make the tents over the winter months.  DeWaard sent me some canvas and curtain samples so I could choose the colours I wanted.

They do hold some limited stock, but if you want to choose your colours get in touch with them quickly.  Most of them speak very good English, but are not so good with written English.

I will be contacting De Waard before the end of the week to see if they may have stock and to discuss what I might want, I just want to get as much info as possible about what that might be before I speak to them! Our trip in July is just for a look and to place an order, but if we were lucky and they had what we want in stock then that would be a bonus!

Thanks bowerbird for the offer of taking a look at your tent during your next trip, but unfortunately we are busy that weekend! There are some lovely sites in the West Midlands you know!

I know the pound is weak against the euro at the moment but I could be waiting forever for things to get better! Luckily I have a nationwide card which has no foreign loading or commision, so at least I get the best available rate!

Great news!!! De Waard have come back to me this morning and say that because of the distance we are travelling, that they will make sure the tent and extras I am interested in are reserved for me with no obligation to buy! So in 5 weeks time I should be the very proud owner of a Lepelaar!

Hello Tessa,

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply to my problem. We have used the varioluifel in the ways that you have explained; the thing is we were trying to shut off the entrance completely in gale force winds coming straight into the entrance. With the sides of the vario zipped to the windscherms there is still too much fabric to go into the hole as it were! We made two big pleats but we need something a bit neater. I have had a reply to my query from de Waard about the zonneluifel they said, (I quote) ...

We thought about this several years ago.

To give the zonneluifel more functionality, De Waard introduced the Varioluifel.

The Lepelaar model (of 1996) was the first one to have this.

The zonneluifel is too short to reach to the ground.

Also, to be able to close it, the user depends too much on the right position of the windschermen.

It was our conclusion (and still is) that it would not be user-friendly enough."

(end of quote - I can't seem to change the print back to black again)

So I am back to square one. You suggested four windscherms; I cannot envisage how that would work?

Thanks anyway.

Hello Lentrott,

Very good news for you from De Waard. I hope you can get exactly what you want in July. We have plans to camp in the Malvern area fairly soon but we have two daughters in Scotland who are going to be joining us. In July we will be motoring all the way to Krakow with four one night camping stops, ( eldest son's wedding) but we wont be taking the Lepolaar just our little two man tent. I would not fancy taking the Lepolaar apart and pitching it every day.

Ooooh, so exiting! All this talk of these wonderful tents prompted me to reply!    We were SO lucky enough to stumble upon a Vergrotte Zilvermiuew just over 2 years ago, and 'made do' with the 2 triangles & sunshade that came with it, but struggled with some pretty grim weather (as have most of us) after pitching the tent with the back to the wind & rain only for it to change direction half way through our holidays.

Anyway last spring we managed to find a 2nd hand Variolufiel (after asking on here & the DeWaard forum) and got it shipped over from Holland.   We put the tent up complete with new Vario and mostly only needed it as a sunshade, but on the night before we left, it chucked it down & we stayed dryer than ever! The next morning we packed everything away and then spent about 3 hours 'playing' with the vario & took pictures along the way. There are so many connotations for this marvelous funny shaped piece of canvas that it was well worth it - I highly recommend spending time getting to know it, as I feel it's way more complicated than it sounds!!

We will have the tent up for 3 days in North Devon 21/22/23 June if anyone wants to come & be trunkie!!

Bowebird, have you thought about posting on the De Waard forum to ask advice - see if anyone's got a photograph they show you.  There's an English section.

Hi again! We have just returned from the Netherlands with our new De Waard! What can I say? I am in ! It is not right that a fully grown man should feel this way about a piece of canvas ! Despite lusting after them for months I had never seen a De Waard in the flesh before and was not prepared for just how beautiful they are...all of them! They were also bigger and heavier than I expected (wheras my wallet is considerably lighter!) In the end we went for the Lepelaar tent with an inner tent, variable canopy, side panels, tent tidy and a couple of matching chairs.

If anyone is thinking of visiting the Netherlands to view/buy one of these tents, it is a far less daunting and a far more pleasant thing than I imagined it would be! The drive from Dunkerque took under 2.5 hrs, and the town of Uden, though modern, is very pleasant and has a great campsite in a nature reserve just 5 mins from the De Waard store!

We get to try out our tent this friday so I will take some photo's and post them here on our return!

Congratulations you are now the owner of one of the finest tents in the world ! Now you have to prepare yourself for all the stares and comments you are going to get everytime you put it up on a uk campsite (I speak from experience).

well done

Hi lentrott,

I am planning to go over to De Waard next year and from their website (which is pants) have picked out the Lepelaar .

Can you please let me know a bit more about the inner tent and why you bought it - I know this is an extra and is quite expensive.

Thanks

Matt

PS Any more info at all on the Lepelaar would be most welcome ! We are a little concerned abou the size of the living area (for 2 adults). Did they show you how to pitch the tent ? Did you get a choice of colours ? Is the variable canopy an easy bit of canvas to handle ?

Hi Matt

The inner tent is much more substantial than the inners you get with normal tents. It attaches to the top of the main pole and the front face of it zips to the sides of the tent (so the gap between tent and inner is not visible). The floor of the inner is made from the same woolly material that the carpets are made from. Buying the inner tent means that you don't buy the curtains and the carpet so if you minus the cost of those, the inner doesn't cost that much more (well that's how I justified it anyway!).  Also, the extra insulation that it offers will extend our season by a couple of months, although De Waards are classed as 4 season tents anyway!

The quality of the tents is simply stunning, but the downside of this is that they are heavy.  The Lepelaar is also bigger that I expected - I don't know if your concerns about the size of the living area were that it would be too small or too big, but if anything it is too big for 2 adults! We have our Guadeloupe as a quick pitch for 2-3 nights, so the extra space in the Lepelaar will suit us well for 4+ night stays!

The tents are usually made to order and take around 3 months to be ready, although each store does have limited numbers of some of the models available from stock.  If you give them plenty of notice they may reserve a tent for you given that you are travelling from the UK. They explained how to pitch the tent, but it is fairly self explanitory, you just need to put the pegs in in the right order.  We chose a burgundy front and side panels, the other options are green (v.nice!) and blue (not quite as nice!).  We haven't pitched the tent yet so I will let you know about the vario, though it seems really simple - just zip to the tent canopy, add poles and peg out!

I'll write a full review when we return from our trip at the end of the month!

Hi lentrott,

Many thanks for replying - am now more convinced than ever that this is the tent for us !

Weight is not an issue - I have a large estate car, pretty big home-made trailer and large Kamei top box - we like our home comforts whilst camping !!!

Did they reserve the tent for you prior to your trip - I was wondering if I would need to make two trips - one to choose the tent and colours etc and one to pick it up ?

I was afraid that there wouldn't be sufficient living space for 2 chairs and a medium size table (at the moment we have an Outwell day tent for eating in but would be buying the De Waard for when our 3 kids have stopped coming with us).

The inner tent sounds great - psychologically we prefer to have a seperate sleeping area (mainly to avoid creepy crawlies) but as we only really camp in France in June/July/Aug was wondering if it would make it very hot - although perhaps the double wall insulating effect would end up keeping it cool!

When you pitch it can you please count up how many guy rope pegs are required as I am a Delta peg convert and will want to buy enough - it would be bomb proof then !!!

Would it be rude to ask how much it cost (minus the chairs) in Euros ?

Thanks very much for your help.

Matt

Hi Matt!

I contacted De Waard at the beginning of June to say that we would be coming, and that I was 90% sure that I wanted a Lepelaar.  They said that because we were travelling almost 500 miles they would be prepared to reserve one for us with no obligation to buy.  Upon seeing the Lepelaar our initial thought was that it may be too big so we asked what else was in stock - they had a Roerdomp, a Stormvogel and a couple of others, although some were ex display (15% off), others had no zips for side panels, canopies etc, so we were glad we reserved one in the end!

I too am a big fan of Deltas, though I don't really think they are required for De Waards - the pegs supplied are very sturdy and as someone on the De Waard forum said: 'Delta's are a solution for a non existant problem - De Waards don't blow down!!!'

The total cost of the tent was 2650 euro's, but having seen the quality I had no problem shelling out for it! I just hope I don't get bored of camping!

If you are looking to add Deltas to a big De Waard (Albatros,Lepelaar, Vergrote Zilvermeeuw) you are looking at about 30 ish for the main tent body plus more to anchor your various "luifels" which to be honest is a bit overkill - however the pegs that came with our Albatros where great big metal things and after our 5 year old gashed his ankle against one of them I decided to go for Deltas as a safer option than a ring of steel. You dont need them to stop the tent from blowing away that's for sure, though saying that the individual guys running around the tent to each pegging point do get put under quite high tension so you want something a bit meatier than your average skinny little peg especially if the ground is soft.

Good point about the dangers of steel pegs - thats the other reason I love Delta pegs - they lay flat to the ground and I dont end up stubbing my toe( or worse!).

Any way whats £30 - £40 when you have spent Euro 2650 LOL

Lentrott - can you please describe the tent tidy - I am thinking about reserving everything that you purchased - although we quite fancy the green colour scheme.

Your help is much appreciated.

Matt

Hi Matt

I have added a a picture of the inside of a Lepelaar (not mine) to my profile, the tent tidy's can be seen either side of the door! Have you looked at the De Waard Forum? They are a really helpful bunch, plus all of my (and Martins!) questions are on there too! Also look on Marktplaats (a sort of Dutch eBay) and 'Zoek' for 'Lepelaar', there are lot's of photo's on there!

I'm glad you fancy the green! I wouldn't be wanting anyone in the UK to have an identical tent to me!!!
