Hi, we're going north at the end of the month, for a week's camping and catching up with family.

Looking at Google maps of the area, the area seems quite undeveloped (we've not been up there for 10 years). We usually go to Pembrokeshire where there's loads of beaches and loads to do.

We'll be taking bikes and doing some mountain biking in Galloway Forest, but does anyone have any other suggestions for stuff to do with kids aged 9, 11 & 13?

Thx
Andy

Dalbeattie Forest is good for mountain biking too - my (then) ten year old son managed the blue moderate route just fine.

And Dumfries itself is a fine old town to spend a day in.

If you're heading further west, the lighthouse at Mull of Galloway is worth a look; it's open to the public on certain days.

Thx all. I hope the weather is good... Mrs Narf will never forgive me if it's wet and we can't find anything to do...

Also Creetown Gem Rock Museum. WE didn't have the time to go ourselves, but my son certainly wanted to.

There's a zip wire place near Creetown. Watersports at Loch Ken Holiday Park. Lead mining museum (has a small steam train).

Good list, Mountain Runner. I'd second all of those.
Children are maybe a bit young, but Logan Botanics are good (newts in the pond by the café).
Hand feed the eels at Logan Fish Pond.
Portpatrick is good for a wander - harbour, ice cream etc., start of the Southern Upland Way.
They can knock a golf ball around the wee course at the top of the road down to Kippford. Lots of other great value & interesting golf courses in D&G, but more for the grown ups apart from the short course at Brighouse Bay site.
Threave Castle - get to it by going over the river on a boat. Look out for the ospreys hunting the river there.
Drumlanrig is good for mountain biking.
North end of D&G in Nithsdale (north of Drumlanrig), new huge open air place called Crawick Multiverse designed by Charles Jencks.
I've seen youngsters up The Merrick if they're fit, and the weather is good.
Orchardton Tower - tucked away not far from Dalbeattie and Screel Hill, it's cute & round & free. Very fairy tale.
Kirkcudbright has events on all summer, e.g. duck races and bands & the equivalent of the Border Ridings, not to mention just looking at the big fishing boats going out.
The Solway View site has nature trails etc for youngsters.
Web cam for ospreys at Wigtown town hall. But avoid going to the nearby Martyrs' Stake out in Wig Bay as it's not a story for young children and the place has a chilling atmosphere. (Two women were drowned at the stake there, as they would not renounce their religious beliefs in the 1600s.)
Bird watching at Mull of Galloway - but mind the cliffs.
All the Forestry visitor centres are family friendly with safe trails to wander - Glentrool, Kirroughtry etc. Take binoculars & a book & do some star watching & planet spotting - the dark skies are astonishing. (There's an observatory but it's at Dalmellington's Craigengillan estate, in East Ayrshire not D&G.)

PS
Too late to edit.
It's muckle big fish that you feed at the Logan Fish Pond at Port Logan (which, BTW, is a pretty place used for tv drama locations). Eel feeding was New Zealand.
