Hi all getting my 1st van at the weekend, she a project so may miss the summer but was wondering for the best place to start out in the caravaning world, as i've never towed a van before access is a mist an easy pitches to get on to with reversing etc. have a auto ford galaxy, looking for very quite places definitely not the big sites, as were just looking for wilderness, i'd even try wild caravaning but i hear that a bit on the dogy side of things, any help on this would be grate, thanks!

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your forthcoming project. Firstly, dont worry about towing. When we first started my hubby had never towed and I was worried sick we would prang the van on our first outing so we chose a site 30 miles away with just the A59 A1 and A19 to deal with. Easy, except we took the wrong exit off the A19 to the site, went down a narrow lane, over a Ford and then met a combine harvester head on. We have since had 70 trips out, several of those in Europe and this is with a biggish an 7.48mtrs in 6 years, never had an accident and still loving every minute. So just do it, relax. Take your time give everything a wide berth and enjoy. J x

If you're in one of the clubs (Caravan Club or Camping and Caravanning Club) then it sounds like you'd enjoy staying on CS or CLs - small private sites on farms or private land that are allowed to take up to 5 caravans/motorhomes. Some of these have toilets, showers, electric hook-ups etc and others are basically a field with a water tap and a chemical disposal area - probably as close to wild camping as you can get without actually wild camping! Lots of these in Cumbria, more in the north of the county than the south, but plenty to choose from. Just check access in advance (by car if not too far from home) as a few of the sites have narrow access roads so probably best to leave these till you're more confident towing.

I use Google street view to check access roads so I don't meet a caravan on a single road like Robc24 with farm traffic. I never use sites with bad access and there are lots of them. If you insist on going to sites with narrow single roads, arrive mid to late afternoon. Most caravans coming out of sites leave in the morning so you don't meet one.
For a first practice run out try Dalston Hall near Carlisle. I see you live in Cumbria. Good roads good access, lots of space to maneuver and nice friendly owners who will help you if needed.

Well my small restoration job ending up taking a lot longer than I 1st thought! but getting there now new carpet an vynal flooring ordered so should be good for a test run in the next few weeks! so as a maybe to towing I planned just to go out an drive, then a cupper in a layby then back home. so with the van I got a stabilizer bar,
its a ford galaxy Auto that I'll be towing with, will I need to fit it? or should it be fine with out.

Meany thanks guys!

Well living in Cumbria you will be spoilt for choice with sites. Only have tent so cannot advise really except try site with loads of pitch space and take your time.Youll be an expert before you know it
