Just to let folks know that two new sites will be coming on stream this summer on Mull, both in the Salen area with fantastic views of the Sound of Mull.

Opening Summer 2019 is Salen Bay campsite. Tel. 01680 300495. This has waste disposal and full facilities.

Also opening this year (no date yet but website says spring) is Pennygown Holiday park. Website - www.pennygownholidaypark.com. Tel. 07799 711125. This also has waste disposal and full facilities.

Thanks to the efforts of a number of community groups, there is a new leaflet which Calmac is going to give every motorhome and campervan visiting Mull. This lists contact details and simple facilities for all the sites and their location on the island in simple map form. It also includes the island's roads - whether they are single or double track (only 13 miles of the latter!); which are not suitable for vans over 6m long; road sections that need extra care and parking for daytime use only plus some other helpful hints. There's also a point made that Tobermory Main Street is not a parking area for such vehicles - simply a through route for those going to or coming from the Tobermory - Kilchoan ferry.

I was a bit torn as to whether I should put this in this section or the motorhome section. Put it here because of the new sites coming on stream.

Is the Salen Bay site where the targa rally had a test in 2017 (on the right on the road to the pier)?

I'll try and keep folks up to date on when they're opening.

Salen village is on the 495 bus route from Craignure to Tobermory for backpackers info.

Pennygown is just over 1 mile south of Salen, whilst Salen Bay is accessed in the village and just over half a mile from the main road and village facilities.

The Spar in the village is superb - I regularly go down to shop there - and often has local fish and meat for sale, plus fresh veg. Fresh local fish is also available from Ardmore Fish on the way to Salen Pier. It serves as a Post Office which is also open all the time the shop is. The Salen Hotel serves lunches and evening meals. Mediterranea is a great Italian menus and the Coffee Pot has lovely cakes. The Glenforsa Hotel, just south of Salen also serves lovely food, has great food and you might just see a light plane landing/taking off at the grass airfield!

You can hire bikes in the village and MacDonald's Filling Station is within the village on the Gruline road.

Sea fishing and sea eagle viewing trip operator plus a wildlife land based tour operator are based in the village and if you want to further afield, many of the wildlife viewing trips (land and sea) will often collect from Salen.

Looking at their price list I assume they don't want bookings from anyone who goes camping on their own! I was considering going there in early June, I'll stick to sites that charge per person.

Ficklejade, if you can spare the time (about 10 mins each), it's worth adding to the UKCS list. There's a short form to fill in & then it's on the map & can get updated as required. I say because I know that I might have forgotten you'd posted this when it comes to my next return visit.
The leaflet sounds extremely useful, well done to the group involved. Just hope the folks with their 8m long MHs note the stretches of road with the short length restriction so you have fewer problems.

I'm of the same view, Speaker12!!

They had some 8 or 9 units on the site last night - maybe one of those is a UKCS member and can post review.

PS Just heard, closed roads motorsports in Scotland legislation through.

Any news on the Salen site. I have just emailed to see if Pennygown will discount for single person in caravan and to check on awning as it is not mentioned on prices while Motorhomes and Campervans are. If I am right I think this site is close to the only "main" road on Mull.

Sorry, I've just seen this, thanks for the info.

I'm thinking of going to Fidden Farm at the end of the month or sometime in June, other than going to Iona I've not really explored that area. I need to contact them and see if booking is required as I'd rather wait until I know the weather is likely to be ok rather than booking weeks in advance.
