Thanks, Capt. Lightning, was just curious as we can get too many visitors all at once here and it can be a nightmare just going about your daily business. Plus, despite having more campsites than on Skye which is much bigger than Mull, people prefer informal camping. Most are respectful, but a fair few, usually hired, aren't.

Both one of my neighbours and I have, this year, come back up our drives to find campervans installed there! And there's an inexpensive campsite less than a mile away! I moved them on politely - I even rang the campsite to be sure they had space for them as their mobile network didn't have coverage here (Three, in case that's helpful to anyone).

When you have to live in a place that can be choked from   June to mid-September and Mums with prams and wheelchair users can't get along the street to do their messages because vehicles park on pavements or long vehicles park half across the road and the bus services are disrupted, patience does tend to wear very thin. Especially when your Council wants to make matters worse! Not to mention access for the emergency services.

Well done you. I'd have been raging. Maybe they thought yours was an unoccupied holiday home - I read recently that one tenth of the properties on Skye are listed on Airbnb.
When we got a MH, people would say - "oh it must be lovely being able to stop for the night wherever you want." Clearly your visitors didn't know one of the rules of informal camping "don't park in front of anyone's house".

I was incandescent, Fiona, but I was in my First Aider's uniform which was somewhat discoloured after dealing with a head wound, and they looked rather shocked at the sight! So I thought I'd better be helpful. They departed complete with directions, info on how to drive on single track roads and and a few pointers on where to park!! It might have been very different had they been belligerent!

Mull Community Council and Iona Community Council have applied to the Court of Session as A&BC did not respond to the letter from our solicitors. The Scottish Petitions Committee has agreed that the whole procedure must be thoroughly reviewed. A&BC now refuse to communicate with either Community Council because of the legal action! They also don't seem to want to discuss the local community group's proposals for traffic management in Tobermory! I think you should be okay in October because the application to the Court of Session effectively means they are stuck!

Thanks for the update. I saw a photograph of Ledaig a few days back, it looked chaotic. I drove through Fort Augustus last week, that was jammed full too. Even a relatively hidden beach on the west coast, which I've only ever seen very few people on, had a load of families on it. It was sad in a way, a place that was very special to me turned into another tourist hotspot.

I think you will find the locals in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, The Lake district etc and even the Wales will all say the same about tourists.

I have never heard about the narrow minded people in the Highlands saying what you say. I find them to be the very opposite. Open minded and very friendly as long as you treat them as you like to be treated yourself.
Believe me when I say some tourists seem to think the locals are there to serve them?

Vangoman, had to smile at that last paragraph! I'm not involved in tourism but I will try and help visitors if I can but the way some of them talk to you, it's quite hard. I was treated to a tirade the other day by some visitors because they had no phone signal. I explained there was no mobile signal on any network where they were and asked what the problem was, thinking maybe someone was unwell or their car had broken down and I was happy to take them down to the nearest house to use a landline. No, they wanted to look at their emails, so I told them where they could get reception. That was when they set off big time with some really bad language. I left them to it!

It's the few that spoil it. But the few seem to be increasing. Some of that is sadly the way society seems to be going - me first.

I find it sad and ironic. Nowadays, we have masses of ways to find out what is and what isn't available at a place, yet a lot don't seem to bother, just expect and get annoyed if what they want isn't available. Why moan if something is so important to you and you can't do your research first?

We have a tourist attraction nearby whose carpark is used as an "overnight" motorhome park. One morning last year a local resident counted 28 units and the mess that is left quite often is disgraceful. Where do these people think the money comes from to clear these places up after them?

At least a tourist tax will go some way towards cleaning up after those who leave the mess behind.

Hopefully any monies collected by a possible tourism tax will be used in addition to H.C. funding and not in place of.
