Hi. Well its a long time since I was here! Having been through tents and caravans we stopped doing either a few years ago. However we have a plan that I wanted some advice on please...... were buying a Vauxhall Vivaro van, partly as hubby fishes a lot and has loads of gear, and partly with a view to add a bed etc for camping. Its already got an awning, but I'm concerned as to whether it would be accepted on many sites? Would it be classed as a campervan or would we encounter problems? Many thanks

Check out the government's guideline on reclassification a vehicle into a motor caravan:

DVLA's Guidance

I did not know this guidance existed until I discovered a lot of sites do not accept campervan, and campervan is not listed as an unit option in UKCS's Search facility, and was wondering why that was the case, DOH!

My excuse is that I am a tenter and have not paid much notice to the changes in legislation relating to tin tents.

Getting a custom VW Crafter campervan, hopefully should be ready in September 2020, can't wait!
Living the dream and JFDI I'd say!

Different sites have different rules.

Some sites won't accept any vans that don't look like a campervan/motorhome i.e. conform to the government guidance about what constitutes a campervan. Some will accept vans with a bed in the back and no other facilities. Some fall in between the two as to what they will accept.

We go away in out fully converted van with a friend who has what you are suggesting and whilst we were accepted our friend's van wasn't at one site (we both left), and another 'allowed' our friend to camp with us but warned us not to come again (as if we would want to!). Both had been booked in advance and there had been no questions about what vans we were bringing. Not a nice situation to confront on a leisurely weekend away!

We now we always ring in advance ask if we will both be allowed on to save any embarrassment.

Go to France, sites will take any unit there, except maybe twin axel caravans.

Many 'campervans' are no longer motor caravans by UK DVLA guidelines, including the VW California's. It's going to be down to the site.

France is brilliant very laid back we have a twin axle and although a site might advertise as no twins if you turn up and they see who you are itís ok.     In Germany last year and an old converted fire engine parked beside us with a New Age traveller crew and no one bothered.    Seems itís just us brits who have our noses up our backsides      Just go ahead and convert your van     We have in the past.    If a site doesnít want you give your money to someone who does      Wouldnít want to stay in a stuck up place anyway
