We stay for the CLs/CSs, would not pay club prices even with discounts. We don't need "pretty" loos, we have our own in the caravan. It would seem that some folk base their opinions of sites on the loos which intrigues me.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

We are members of the C&CC but certainly don't always use their sites. We have used some lovely CSs, but we often find that some commercial sites are cheaper when we want to go. One of the main reasons for this I suspect is their pricing structure. They have high, mid, and low seasons. Low is basically winter, as far as we are concerned, and high is all school holidays. The rest of the time is mid-season, which is not that much cheaper than high season. Most of the commercial sites we have been on have only high and low season. High being school holidays and the rest of the year is low. The commercial site we went on for the first two weeks of July last year, classed that as low season, which made it way cheaper than the nearest C&CC site.

I think it is an age demographic thing. Both clubs seem to have a large number of retired members. They are old school, and were touring when onboard facilities were non-existent. They base the quality of a site on whether the bathrooms are tiled or not.
If you look at the trend in the industry it is for more fully serviced pitches as these sell out first, attract better revenue, and reduce the site operating costs for cleaning.

Both clubs are slow to react to this trend.

We were in the cmc but got fed up with the booking system, whenever we looked at a site it was nearly always booked out well in advance. This was because people booked several sites for the same dates and nearer to the time made their choice. We asked cmc why they didnít take a small deposit to deter an individual from booking several sites at the same dates
CMC , in our opinion just didnít seem interested when we asked if they were planning to make any changes to the booking system.
Someone we know who belongs to the cmc told us they had the same experiences but phoned the sites direct
Is it still the same today I wonder?

We joined a club 30+ years ago, in our 30s. We joined C&CC because we had a tent, no en suite, and CAMC (or CC as it was then) didnít then take tent campers. (I think even now many sites only take tents if youíre on a bike or walking?) Yes, loos are important to us but in only 2 respects - presence / absence, and cleanliness. Weíve been perfectly happy at sites where others have slated the facilities just because theyíre old.
Families coming to camping probably begin with a tent (cheaper than a MH or caravan), so I think they donít join CAMC which may skew the membership age. Or they donít join at all, given there are so many excellent independent sites.

Nowadays you can only hold one CMC booking for the same dates. It is not possible to book more than one site, the system just wonít let you. I know lots of people book up every weekend of the season and then cancel if the weather doesnít look good or if something better comes up for them but I donít mind that as there are always going to be cancellations for us to make use of! We often donít know when we can get away until a few days before and although all CMC sites are usually booked, if you keep checking in the days leading up to the weekend, we have always managed to get a cancellation. So the CMC suits us very well.

We are also in the C&CC and use it once a year for a longer break at a particular site that we love. However, because the C&CC take deposits, it is much rarer to get cancellations at the last minute so this doesnít suit us as well as we can never get in anywhere at the last minute with them.

We rarely book anywhere more than a few weeks ahead, and sometimes only days. But we never go in school holidays and rarely go away for weekends. More often than not we start our holidays and short breaks on a Monday, when all the weekenders are leaving for home. Never generally have a problem getting in. We have often found that a site showing as fully-booked for a Friday or Saturday arrival, is half empty on Monday.

We have seen this many times on our two-week holidays. We arrive Monday afternoon, have a pick of the pitches and then enjoy having the place peaceful and quiet for the next few days. Then on Friday it starts to fill up. Saturday the last few pitches go and the place is packed. Sunday morning a few are starting to pack up and go, and on Monday they are followed by most of the remainder. Then we are on a half-empty site again until the next Friday afternoon.
