Hi all, I've just taken out club care camping insurance. I've taken it out twice before and I'm pleased to say that I've not needed to make a claim. If you go on their website it clearly says that they will insure the contents of your tent against fire, theft, flood and so on. It also says that it will not pay out more than 300 for any single item. I put in my details and I was quoted almost 50 for the year. I was asked to read their policy before paying and it was only after paying I received all the info on what to do if I need to make a claim and what is not covered.
I wanted to insure my Hilleberg soulo which is a 610 tent and I wanted 1200 contents insurance, it's only in the winter that I hit that figure on my contents. I presumed that the quote I was given was high due to the 1810 total. I have just read through the terms on what they will cover and the maximum amount they will cover me for is 300 (contents). I was under the impression that I would be able to leave my tent, rucksack, stove, sleeping bag and bed back at my tent and go into the local town without having to carry half my equipment on my back. What is the point of asking me how much I want to cover my contents for only to tell me after I have paid that I might as well have said my tent and 300 contents. I'm sure I would've got a cheaper quote. I was going to leave my rucksack, sleeping bag. bed and a few odds and ends back at the tent but that all comes to the value of around 900. The only thing I can leave behind in that case is the bed and the odds and ends.

I don't want to come across as bitter, I will cancel the insurance so there is no harm. I was wondering if anyone else knew about this, knows if this is common with camping insurers. Can you point me in the direction of a descent insurer? Ok, that bit did sound bitter. I don't want anyone else thinking they are covered when they are not, or at least not to the extent they think they are. Your thoughts on the matter and advice if any. Thanks.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the 300 contents limit is against theft. The most common thing to happen to a tent is theft. Are you meant to take all your equipment into the shower block with you when you get a shower.

Insurance companies are a little bit more informed than bookmakers, but they are still just balancing out what they take in versus what they pay out.

Its a bit sneaky changing the terms after you have purchased though, and I'd raise a complaint with the ombudsman. If that gets you no where, trying the advertising standards agency or even trading standards might see things changes.

If people going on holiday looked at their fine print for medical insurance they would be surprised at how little is covered especially once alcohol is in the system, it really does pay to read the small print but the fact so many dont shows these companies can get away with it.
