I expect most of you read reviews on this site and elsewhere and draw your own conclusions. Some people seem to register on a site just to air personal gripes. Friends just back from a friendly little site we recommended saw the elderly owners reduced to tears by a spiteful review. The reviewer said they would not be returning to the site, thank goodness, I wouldn't want them camped next to me! Reviews should be of the site and not the place to air a personal grudge.

So if you visited a campsite which was nice but the owner was a bit snotty or ignorant then you consider that this shouldn't be added to the review?
In reality it's no different to leaving a review for a hotel or Bed & Breakfast so if the accommodation was A1 but the attitude of the staff was below the standard expected then I consider it only fair to present a review on the facts of the holidaymaker.
The fact is you have to take the reviews as a basic guide as some reviews are as different as chalk and cheese because what some people find unnacceptable others don't.
For example (not to mention the name of the campsite) in the reviews it said there were trains passing close by the nearby station which the driver always sounded the horn (due to a pedestrian crossing) which could deter many folk but wasn't as bad as reported which we thought added that little charm to the site.

Agreed, but our friends felt the reviewer was annoyed about their children being told off. I find it interesting to read reviews of sites or restaurants I know and see the contrasting opinions. Generally the reviews on this site are worth their weight in gold.

If we are going to encourage people to write reviews they have got to be able to air their views of the campsite. We don't have to agree with them. My problem would be if only one topic was the subject of the review rather than a general review concentrating on what was wrong as that was might not be replicated in the future.

Any review is a matter of personal opinion, and it's always possible that someone else's experience was entirely different to yours. For example, I wrote a positive review about a year ago after staying on a site at a quiet time of year. Everything I said was almost immediately countered by a lady who had stayed at the same site over a bank holiday weekend, been nervous about travelling down narrow country lanes to reach the site and upon arrival, felt that it was overcrowded and that the facilities and owners weren't really able to cope with the number of visitors. Whilst I certainly didn't agree with all of her opinions, I could see that she had a point.

Certainly I can see that if a site owner does tell of your children and you think this is unfair, this might spoil your whole experience and then of course it would be highlighted in a review.

The only solution is for as many people as possible to write their own reviews based on what they thought. If this results in a page on this site showing one bad review among a dozen positive ones, most people will draw their own conclusions.

One of my favourite things about planning a trip is to choose a site based on the UKcampsite reviews and then filter the relevant Tripadvisor page for the 1* reviews to see what the nut jobs have to say. Endless amusement.

Tripadvisor provides fun reading for sure. Some campsites/cafes/attractions are unrecognisable from negative reviews. But there is a right of reply on there and it's interesting to read the owner's views.

I think there's a right to reply here too. I was once a bit negative about one of my favourite sites - the Secret Garden in Wisbech - and they responded. No idea what the mechanism is though. Here's a link.

I was once very negative about Scotts Haven near Portsmouth and they responded. I seem to have been the only person to dislike this site, but I didn't think that the autumn leaves in the sink still there 6 months later, and a load of crinkled dusty brochures were in any way acceptable!

I always read reviews on here but I do get peeved by people complaining about neighbours or other campers. Ok, if the site owners have been informed that someone is, say, making excessive noise after 11 p.m. and hasnít done anything about it, thatís fair. A lot of poor reviews, in my view, are nothing to do with the site but with someone else on the site.

I want to know things like where the bus stop is, how long it takes to walk into the village etc. not how you didnít get on with the person on the next pitch.

A lot of reviews mention poor facilities, but seeing as we normally use CLs or CSs which often don't have loos or showers, that is not a concern for us. We need to know where are the shops, fuel etc, access to walks, which I always try to mention. There are some idiots around, we just ignore them.
