All,

Just wondering if anyone is watching the setup with the Euro - I think the Eurozone is in big trouble, and taking a purely selfish view, would like to see it collapse in value just before I go to France on holiday :)

Anyone got any views?

Hi Vicki,

It is evident that Greece is in a mess, and that puts the Euro in a difficult position.  Economists reckon that the Euro is overvalued.

Now with the inaction over Greece, the markets are beginning to be spooked, and the Euro could potentially unravel.

BEst case is that the is stronger against the Euro by the time we go on holidays :)

If the collapsed it would be also be bad for the UK, but fortunately nowadays our markets are too well regulated for financial armageddon to occur. One would hope that with our slightly strengthening ecomomy & the Eurozone not really being able to paper over the cracks anymore that by holiday time the should have sunk to its natural level of somewhat below 80p to the 1.

Certainly one in the eye for those that said we should have entered the tho.

Hi Tentz.

I disagree, we should have had the Euro years ago, not just for Holiday reasons, but for many other reasons, the only reason we still have the is so that the money makers can get rich by playing the currency game, and we are stupid enough to let them get away with it, at the next gen election, I will only vote for a party that promises to take UK into the Euro within a 100 days, so it looks like I will not be voting again!.

Not just Greece in trouble. Ireland Spain and Portugal too.

Had we been in the euro we would have been sheltered from the collapse of our own currency over the last 2 years. Now that the Euro is falling our exports will be dearer and many may suffer as a result not being in a position to afford a holiday.

I think it's overly simplistic to say good the euro is collapsing just because we want to go on holiday.

That's just what I was going to say........if the euro goes...so will sterling to a great extent.

Once a country adopts the Euro it can not go back, ever!, that is one of the set in stone conditions, as a way of guaranteeing that the Euro can never fail no matter what, it's a great idea and safe guards all those in the club, if the Euro drops to 50p then UK manufacturing export will die, as UK products/services then become over priced to business in the Eurozone, and they will just focus on trading between themselves, in effect freezing the UK out, if that happens we will probably end up with the $, which come to think of it is not a bad idea either, with it being the international currency!.

I think you will find that if the pound starts to improve against the euro our government will print more money (quantative easing ) this will then stop the pound rising , they are not interested in holidaymakers/savers/middle classes

likely to have a deharmonising effect on the whole eurozone and wider EU, the more stable economies having to bail out the rest or risk their economies sinking as well. Knock on effect on other EU countries outwith the eurozone as well as the EU will likely try to shore things up

Your hols might be cheaper, but how much will it cost ?

Hi Lassie

This might be a little late for next week but I have used Crownexchange to buy euros. I got 1.144 euros per pound for a holiday in March and 1.165 for a holiday in May. The minimum order is 300 but their rates seem far better than the High street rates. Obviously there is an element of gambling especially when you buy several months in advance.

The money sections of the papers seem to suggest that the euro could drop after the general election.
